    Factors that contribute to overall job satisfaction among faculty at a large public land-grant university in the Midwest

    Previous research studies have indicated that academic workplaces that do not acknowledge the multidimensional lives of faculty constitute an unsupportive and unwelcoming environment especially for women faculty who undertake both an academic career and motherhood. In recent years, institutions of higher education have adopted and made available to their faculty dependent care policies that extend beyond the federally mandated Family Medical Leave Act of 1993. These policies include, among others, options that allow faculty members with dependents to elect to stop the tenure clock or to modify their workload (e.g., work part time and reduce course loads and service commitments) for a specified period of time in order to focus on caregiving responsibilities. Although faculty job satisfaction has been a widely researched topic (e.g., August & Waltman, 2004; Hagedorn, 1996; Johnsrud & Rosser, 2002; Near & Sorcinelli, 1986; Rosser, 2004; Schuster & Finklestein, 2006), few if any studies have measured the impact of dependent care policies on faculty members\u27 global job satisfaction. This study tested an empirical model to determine the factors, dependent care policies among others, that contribute to overall job satisfaction among tenured and tenure-track faculty at a large public land-grant university in the Midwest and investigated differences between men and women. This study employed structural equation modeling (SEM) to test the model. Data were collected from Iowa State University (ISU) faculty in 2008 using the Association of American Universities Data Exchange (AAUDE) Faculty Satisfaction Survey. Participants for this study included 644 tenured or tenure-track faculty members who held the position of assistant, associate, or full professor at ISU. Results were analyzed for all faculty, middle-aged faculty, senior faculty, and men and women. The results indicated that dependent care policies had a negligible direct effect on faculty job satisfaction; a strong and positive effect on academic resources; and a positive and moderate effect on relational support, which proved to be a statistically significant pathway across all samples tested. The findings of this study provide valuable insight for educators and policy makers who are interested in factors that contribute to overall job satisfaction for female and male faculty members at a large research institution in the Midwest

    TUNNEL GEOLOGY AS SEEN BY GEOLOGISTS: MANHATTAN, NEW YORK CITY

    Current exploratory boring operations in and around Manhattan, New York City are providing geologists and geotechnical engineers with a plethora of new and interesting geological information, which has not been previously reported. The rocks encountered, mostly medium to high-grade metamorphic rocks, with both mafic and felsic intrusives, are highly variable in competency and mechanical durability. One of the most frequently encountered rock types is a garnetiferous-muscovite-biotite schist which grades into schistose gneiss and displays a wide variety of structural, compositional, and textural attributes. Metamorphic minerals showing the variable degree of metamorphism include graphite, talc, garnet, kyanite, tourmaline, emory, and occasionally sillimanite. The presence of magnetite-rich zones within the muscovite-garnet schist suggests a mechanism for the concentration of iron during metamorphism. Concentrations of garnet both in the schist and intrusive pegmatite is perhaps indicative of anatectic melting of the protolith. Marble is the dominant rock type east of CAMERON\u27S LINE and it varies from pure white calcitic to dolomitic coarsely crystalline marble, to siliceous calcitic to dolomitic marble. In places, highly pyrite-rich zones, perhaps suggesting hydrothermal alteration of the parent rock due to subsequent mineral-rich fluid flow, are observed. The timing of the sulfide-rich fluid-flow through the original bedrock is yet to be determined. Partial dissolution of marble at various depths has resulted in void (cave) formation and has posed a threat to the boring operations. Rocks of lower abundance include amphibolite, granodiorite, quartzite, serpentinite, and aplite. The overall structural fabric is controlled by the Taconic and Acadian Orogenic events and manifested in the development of characteristic foliation, joint patterns, intrusives, and the degree of metamorphism of the protoliths

    Characterization of an hrp-aox-polyaniline-graphite composite biosensor

    Nowadays there is an increasing demand to develop new and robust biosensors in order to detect low concentrations of different chemicals, in practical and small devices, giving fast and confident responses. The electrode material was a polyaniline-graphite-epoxy composite (PANI/GEC). Alcohol oxidase (AOX) and horseradish peroxidase (HRP) enzymes were immobilized and the responses were tested by cyclic voltammetry. The conductivities for the composites of graphite/polyaniline were determined. The cyclic voltammograms allowed detecting ethanol in pure diluted samples in a range from 0.036 to 2.62 M. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermal gravimetry analysis (TGA) were used to verify the thermal characteristics of the composites (0, 10, 20, 30 and 100 % of graphite). The Imax value was determined for the dual enzyme biosensor (0.0724 mA), and the Kapp m as 1.41 M (with R2 =0.9912)

    Evolution of aerial spider webs coincided with repeated structural optimization of silk anchorages

    Physical structures built by animals challenge our understanding of biological processes and inspire the development of smart materials and green architecture. It is thus indispensable to understand the drivers, constraints, and dynamics that lead to the emergence and modification of building behavior. Here, we demonstrate that spider web diversification repeatedly followed strikingly similar evolutionary trajectories, guided by physical constraints. We found that the evolution of suspended webs that intercept flying prey coincided with small changes in silk anchoring behavior with considerable effects on the robustness of web attachment. The use of nanofiber based capture threads (cribellate silk) conflicts with the behavioral enhancement of web attachment, and the repeated loss of this trait was frequently followed by physical improvements of web anchor structure. These findings suggest that the evolution of building behavior may be constrained by major physical traits limiting its role in rapid adaptation to a changing environment

    Development and validation of vulnerable and enabling indices for hiv viral suppression among people with hiv enrolled in the ryan white program

    Background: Numerous factors impact HIV care, often requiring consideration of indices to prevent collinearity when using statistical modeling. Using the Behavioral Model for Vulnerable Populations, we developed vulnerable and enabling indices for people living with HIV (PLWH). Methods: We used Ryan White Program (RWP) data and principal component analysis to develop general and gender-and racial/ethnic-specific indices. We assessed internal reliability (Cronbach’s alpha), convergent validity (correlation coefficient), and predictive utility (logistic regression) with non-viral suppression. Results: Three general factors accounting for 79.2% of indicators’ variability surfaced: mental health, drug use, and socioeconomic status (Cronbach’s alpha 0.68). Among the overall RWP population, indices showed convergent validity and predictive utility. Using gender-or racial/ethnic-specific indices did not improve psychometric performance. Discussion: General mental health, drug use, and socioeconomic indices using administrative data showed acceptable reliability, validity, and utility for non-viral suppression in an overall PLWH population and in gender-and racial/ethnic-stratified populations. These general indices may be used with similar validity and utility across gender and racial/ethnic diverse populations

    Clinical and Parasite Species Risk Factors for Pentavalent Antimonial Treatment Failure in Cutaneous Leishmaniasis in Peru

    Background. Treatment for cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) with standard pentavalent antimonial therapy is hampered by cumbersome administration, toxicity, and potential failure. Knowledge of factors influencing treatment outcome is essential for successful management. Methods. A case-control study of incident cases was performed with patients experiencing their first CL episode. The standard treatment for CL for these patients was 20 mg/kg/day of sodium stibogluconate for 20 days. Clinical and epidemiological data were recorded, and parasite isolates were species typed. Patients were followed up for 6 months to assess treatment outcome. Clinical cure was defined as complete wound closure and re-epithelization without inflammation or infiltration; new lesions, wound reopening, or signs of activity were classified as treatment failure. Descriptive, bivariate, and logistic regression analyses were performed. Results. One hundred twenty-seven patients were recruited; 63 (49.6%) were infected with Leishmania (Viannia) peruviana, 29 (22.8%) were infected with Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis, 27 (21.3%) were infected with Leishmania (Viannia) guyanensis, and 8 (6.3%) were infected with other species. Only patients infected with the 3 most common species were selected for risk-factor analysis (n=119). Final failure rate at 6 months was 24.4% (95% confidence interval [CI], 16.5%-32.1%), with 96% of failures occurring within the first 3 months of follow-up assessment. Risk factors for treatment failure identified in the final multivariate model were age (per year, odds ratio [OR], 0.95; 95% CI, 0.92-0.99; P=.017), stay of <72 months in area of disease acquisition (OR, 30.45; 95% CI, 2.38-389.25; P=.009), duration of disease <5 weeks (OR, 4.39; 95% CI, 1.12-17.23; P=.034), additional lesion (per lesion, OR, 2.06; 95% CI, 1.3-3.28; P=.002), infection with L. (V.) peruviana (OR, 9.85; 95% CI, 1.01-95.65; P=.049), and infection with L. (V.) braziliensis (OR, 22.36; 95% CI, 1.89-263.96; P=.014). Conclusions.     Transport spin polarisation in SrRuO3 measured through Point Contact Andreev reflection

    We report a study in which Andreev reflection using a Nb point contact is used to measure the transport spin polarisation of the 4d itinerant ferromagnet SrRuO3. By performing the study in high quality thin films with residual resistivities less than 7micro-ohm-cm, we ensure that the study is done in the ballistic limit, a regime which is difficult to reach in oxide ferromagnets. The degree of transport spin polarisation that we find is comparable to that of the hole doped rare-earth manganites. We conclude that the large transport spin polarisation results mainly from a difference in the Fermi velocities between the majority and minority spin channels in this material.Comment: Text and 2 Figure

    "Now he walks and walks, as if he didn't have a home where he could eat": food, healing, and hunger in Quechua narratives of madness

    In the Quechua-speaking peasant communities of southern Peru, mental disorder is understood less as individualized pathology and more as a disturbance in family and social relationships. For many Andeans, food and feeding are ontologically fundamental to such relationships. This paper uses data from interviews and participant observation in a rural province of Cuzco to explore the significance of food and hunger in local discussions of madness. Carers’ narratives, explanatory models, and theories of healing all draw heavily from idioms of food sharing and consumption in making sense of affliction, and these concepts structure understandings of madness that differ significantly from those assumed by formal mental health services. Greater awareness of the salience of these themes could strengthen the input of psychiatric and psychological care with this population and enhance knowledge of the alternative treatments that they use. Moreover, this case provides lessons for the global mental health movement on the importance of openness to the ways in which indigenous cultures may construct health, madness, and sociality. Such local meanings should be considered by mental health workers delivering services in order to provide care that can adjust to the alternative ontologies of sufferers and carers

    Suppression of charge-ordering and appearance of magnetoresistance in a spin-cluster glass manganite La0.3Ca0.7Mn0.8Cr0.2O3

    The magnetic properties of electron-doped manganite La0.3Ca0.7MnO3 and La0.3Ca0.7Mn0.8Cr0.2O3 polycrystalline samples prepared by sol-gel technique have been investigated between 5 and 300 K in magnetic fields ranging from 0 to 5 T. The transition at 260 K, attributed to charge ordering in La0.3Ca0.7MnO3, is completely suppressed in the Cr-substituted sample while the onset of a magnetic remanence followed by the appearance of a magnetic irreversibility at lower temperatures is observed in both samples. These features indicate that ferromagnetic clusters coexist with either an antiferromagnetic phase for La0.3Ca0.7MnO3 or a spin-cluster glass phase for La0.3Ca0.7Mn0.8Cr0.2O3 at the lowest temperatures. The exponential temperature dependence of the resistivity for the Cr-substituted sample is consistent with the small polaron hopping model for 120 K < T < 300 K, while the data are better described by Mott's hopping mechanism for T < 120 K. Whereas the parent compound La0.3Ca0.7MnO3 is known to show no magnetoresistance, a large negative magnetoresistance is observed in the La0.3Ca0.7Mn0.8Cr0.2O3 sample below 120 K. The appearance of the CMR is attributed to spin dependent hopping between spin clusters and/or between ferromagnetic domains
