Evidence for frequent incest in a cooperatively breeding mammal.
As breeding between relatives often results in inbreeding depression, inbreeding avoidance is widespread in the animal kingdom. However, inbreeding avoidance may entail fitness costs. For example, dispersal away from relatives may reduce survival. How these conflicting selection pressures are resolved is challenging to investigate, but theoretical models predict that inbreeding should occur frequently in some systems. Despite this, few studies have found evidence of regular incest in mammals, even in social species where relatives are spatio-temporally clustered and opportunities for inbreeding frequently arise. We used genetic parentage assignments together with relatedness data to quantify inbreeding rates in a wild population of banded mongooses, a cooperatively breeding carnivore. We show that females regularly conceive to close relatives, including fathers and brothers. We suggest that the costs of inbreeding avoidance may sometimes outweigh the benefits, even in cooperatively breeding species where strong within-group incest avoidance is considered to be the norm
Endoscopic laser-ablation for the treatment of orthotopic and ectopic ureteroceles in dogs: 13 cases (2008-2017).
BACKGROUND: Ureteroceles are a rare condition in dogs in which conventional treatments can result in substantial morbidity. Cystoscopic and fluoroscopic-guided laser ablation (CLA) of ureteroceles can successfully relieve obstruction.
OBJECTIVES: To describe the technique and outcomes of attempting CLA for treatment of ureteroceles in dogs.
ANIMALS: Thirteen client-owned dogs that underwent CLA for treatment of ureteroceles.
METHODS: Retrospective multicentered study. Medical records were reviewed in all dogs that underwent CLA for ureterocele(s). A laser was used to extend the opening of the ureteral orifice (UO) unless surgical conversion was necessary. Data collected included signalment, clinicopathologic data, imaging, procedural findings, complications, and short- and long-term outcome.
RESULTS: Thirteen dogs with 13 ureteroceles associated with 14 UOs resulting in ureteral obstruction were included. One ureterocele extended bilaterally. Treatment was initiated via retrograde cystoscopy (7 females), percutaneous perineal urethrocystoscopy (4 males), or percutaneous antegrade cystoscopy (2 males). Surgical conversion was necessary in 2 males. Ten of 14 (71%) UOs associated with the ureteroceles were ectopic. Thirteen of 14 had stenotic or imperforate UOs. No postoperative complications were noted. Preoperative incontinence or pollakiuria was present in 9 of 13 and 3 of 13 dogs and resolved in 8 of 9 and 3 of 3 dogs, respectively. Follow-up imaging showed resolution of all ureteroceles and improved ureteral/renal pelvic dilatation. Median follow-up time was 27âmonths (range, 3-96âmonths).
CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE: Cystoscopic-guided laser ablation was effective for the treatment of ureteroceles(s) in 11 of 13 dogs
Blueshifted galaxies in the Virgo Cluster
We examine a sample of 65 galaxies in the Virgo cluster with negative radial
velocities relative to the Local Group. Some features of this sample are
pointed out. All of these objects are positioned compactly within a virial zone
of radius 6{\deg} in the cluster, but their centroid is displaced relative to
the dynamic center of the cluster, M87, by 1.1{\deg} to the northwest. The
dwarf galaxies in this sample are clumped on a scale of ~10' (50 kpc). The
observed asymmetry in the distribution of the blueshifted galaxies may be
caused by infall of a group of galaxies around M86 onto the main body of the
cluster. We offer another attempt to explain this phenomenon, assuming a mutual
tangential velocity of ~300 km/s between the Local Group and the Virgo cluster
owing to their being repelled from the local cosmological void.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, 1 table. Published in Astrophysics, Vol. 53, No.

Long term effect of gender affirming hormone treatment on depression and anxiety symptoms in transgender people: A prospective cohort study
BackgroundCross?sectional studies show that transgender people are more likely than cisgender people to experience depression and anxiety before Gender Affirming Hormone Treatment (GAHT). However, the effect of GAHT on mental health in transgender people, and the role of other factors that may have a predictive effect, is poorly explored.ObjectivesUsing a longitudinal methodology, this study investigated the effect of 18 months GAHT on depression and anxiety symptomatology and the predictors on mental health outcomes in a large population of transgender people.Materials and MethodsParticipants (n=178) completed a socio?demographic questionnaire, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) and the Autism Spectrum Quotient Short Version (AQ?short) at pre?assessment (T0) and at 18 months after initiation of GAHT (T1).ResultsFrom T0 to T1, symptomatology was significantly decreased for depression (P[less than]0.001) and non?significantly reduced for anxiety (P=0.37). Scores on the MSPSS predicted reduction in depression, while scores on the AQ?short predicted reduction in anxiety.DiscussionGAHT reduces symptoms of depression which are predicted by having higher levels of social support. Although anxiety symptoms also reduce the changes are not significant and high levels of anxiety still remain post GAHT.ConclusionsThese results highlight the important mental health benefits of GAHT. Support services (professional, third sector or peer?support) aiming at increasing social support for transgender individuals should be made available
The inner craniodental anatomy of the Papio specimen U.W. 88-886 from the Early Pleistocene site of Malapa, Gauteng, South Africa
Cercopithecoids represent an essential component of the Plio-Pleistocene faunal assemblage. However, despite the abundance of the
cercopithecoid fossil remains in African Plio-Pleistocene deposits, the chronological and geographic contexts from which the modern
baboons (i.e. Papio hamadryas ssp.) emerged are still debated. The recently discovered Papio (hamadryas) angusticeps specimen (U.W.
88-886) from the Australopithecus sediba-bearing site of Malapa, Gauteng, South Africa, may represent the first modern baboon occurrence
in the fossil record. Given the implication of U.W. 88-886 for the understanding of the papionin evolutionary history and the
potential of internal craniodental structures for exploring evolutionary trends in fossil monkey taxa, we use X-ray microtomography to
investigate the inner craniodental anatomy of this critical specimen. Our goal is to provide additional evidence to examine the origins of
modern baboons. In particular,we explore (i) the tissue proportions and the dentine topographic distribution in dental roots and (ii) the
endocranial organization. Consistent with the previous description and metrical analyses of its external cranial morphology, U.W.
88-886 shares internal craniodental anatomy similarities with Plio-Pleistocene and modern Papio, supporting its attribution to Papio
(hamadryas) angusticeps. Interestingly, average dentine thickness and distribution in U.W. 88-886 fit more closely to the extinct Papio
condition, while the sulcal pattern and relative dentine thickness are more like the extant Papio states. Besides providing additional
evidence for characterizing South African fossil papionins, our study sheds new light on the polarity of inner craniodental features in
the papionin lineage.Palaeontological Scientific Trust (PAST)

Water induced sediment levitation enhances downslope transport on Mars
On Mars, locally warm surface temperatures (~293 K) occur, leading to the possibility of (transient) liquid water on the surface. However, water exposed to the martian atmosphere will boil, and the sediment transport capacity of such unstable water is not well understood. Here, we present laboratory studies of a newly recognized transport mechanism: âlevitationâ of saturated sediment bodies on a cushion of vapor released by boiling. Sediment transport where this mechanism is active is about nine times greater than without this effect, reducing the amount of water required to transport comparable sediment volumes by nearly an order of magnitude. Our calculations show that the effect of levitation could persist up to ~48 times longer under reduced martian gravity. Sediment levitation must therefore be considered when evaluating the formation of recent and present-day martian mass wasting features, as much less water may be required to form such features than previously thought
Q methodology and a Delphi poll: a useful approach to researching a narrative approach to therapy
Q methodology and a Delphi poll combined qualitative and quantitative methods to explore definitions of White and Epston's (1990) narrative approach to therapy among a group of UK practitioners. A Delphi poll was used to generate statements about narrative therapy. The piloting of statements by the Delphi panel identified agreement about theoretical ideas underpinning narrative therapy and certain key practices. A wider group of practitioners ranked the statements in a Q sort and made qualitative comments about their sorting. Quantitative methods (principal components analysis) were used to extract eight accounts of narrative therapy, five of which are qualitatively analysed in this paper. Agreement and differences were identified across a range of issues, including the social construction of narratives, privileging a political stance or narrative techniques and the relationship with other therapies, specifically systemic psychotherapy. Q methodology, combined with the Delphi poll, was a unique and innovative feature of this study
