Undamning the Douro river catchment: a stepwise approach for prioritizing dam removal
Dams provide water supply, flood protection, and hydropower generation benefits, but
also harm native species by altering the natural flow regime, and degrading the aquatic and riparian
habitats. In the present study, which comprised the Douro River basin located in the North of
Portugal, the cost-benefit assessment of dams was based upon a balance between the touristic
benefits of a dammed Douro, and the ecological benefits of less fragmented Douro sub-catchments.
Focused on four sub-catchments (Sabor, Tâmega, Côa and Corgo), a probabilistic stream connectivity
model was developed and implemented to recommend priorities for dam removal, where this action
could significantly improve the movement of potadromous fish species along the local streams.
The proposed model accounts for fish movement across the dam or weir (permeability), which
is a novel issue in connectivity models. However, before any final recommendation on the fate
of a dam or weir, the connectivity results will be balanced with other important socio-economic
interests. While implementing the connectivity model, an inventory of barriers (dams and weirs)
was accomplished through an observation of satellite images. Besides identification and location of
any obstacles, the inventory comprised the compilation of data on surrounding land use, reservoir
water use, characteristics of the riparian gallery, and permeability conditions for fish, among others.
All this information was stored in a geospatial dataset that also included geographical information
on the sub-catchment drainage network. The linear (drainage network) and point (barriers) source
data were processed in a computer program that provided or returned numbers for inter-barrier
stream lengths (habitat), and the barrier permeability. These numbers were finally used in the
same computer program to calculate a habitat connector index, and a link improvement index,
used to prioritize dam removal based upon structural connectivity criteria. The results showed
that habitat patch connectivity in the Sabor, Tâmega and Côa sub-catchments is not dramatically
affected by the installed obstacles, because most link improvement values were generally low. For the
opposite reason, in the Corgo sub-catchment, obstacles may constitute a relatively higher limitation
to connectivity, and in this case the removal of eight obstacles could significantly improve this
connectivity. Using the probabilistic model of structural connectivity, it was possible to elaborate
a preliminary selection of dams/weirs that critically limit stream connectivity, and that will be the
focus of field hydraulic characterization to precisely determine fish movement along the associated
river stretches. Future work will also include the implementation of a multi-criteria decision support
system for dam removal or mitigation of the critical structures, as well to define exclusion areas for

Total synthesis and structural studies of zwitterionic Bacteroides fragilis polysaccharide A1 fragments
Zwitterionic polysaccharides (ZPSs) are exceptional carbohydrates,carrying both positively charged amine groups and negatively chargedcarboxylates, that can be loaded onto MHC-II molecules to activateT cells. It remains enigmatic, however, how these polysaccharidesbind to these receptors, and to understand the structural featuresresponsible for this "peptide-like" behavior, well-definedZPS fragments are required in sufficient quantity and quality. Wehere present the first total synthesis of Bacteroidesfragilis PS A1 fragments encompassing up to 12 monosaccharides,representing three repeating units. Key to our successful syntheseshas been the incorporation of a C-3,C-6-silylidene-bridged "ring-inverted"galactosamine building block that was designed to act as an apt nucleophileas well as a stereoselective glycosyl donor. Our stereoselective synthesisroute is further characterized by a unique protecting group strategy,built on base-labile protecting groups, which has allowed the incorporationof an orthogonal alkyne functionalization handle. Detailed structuralstudies have revealed that the assembled oligosaccharides take upa bent structure, which translates into a left-handed helix for largerPS A1 polysaccharides, presenting the key positively charged aminogroups to the outside of the helix. The availability of the fragmentsand the insight into their secondary structure will enable detailedinteraction studies with binding proteins to unravel the mode of actionof these unique oligosaccharides at the atomic level.Bio-organic Synthesi
Adaptation of sea turtles to climate warming: Will phenological responses be sufficient to counteract changes in reproductive output?
Sea turtles are vulnerable to climate change since their reproductive output is influenced by incubating temperatures, with warmer temperatures causing lower hatching success and increased feminization of embryos. Their ability to cope with projected increases in ambient temperatures will depend on their capacity to adapt to shifts in climatic regimes. Here, we assessed the extent to which phenological shifts could mitigate impacts from increases in ambient temperatures (from 1.5 to 3°C in air temperatures and from 1.4 to 2.3°C in sea surface temperatures by 2100 at our sites) on four species of sea turtles, under a “middle of the road” scenario (SSP2-4.5). Sand temperatures at sea turtle nesting sites are projected to increase from 0.58 to 4.17°C by 2100 and expected shifts in nesting of 26–43 days earlier will not be sufficient to maintain current incubation temperatures at 7 (29%) of our sites, hatching success rates at 10 (42%) of our sites, with current trends in hatchling sex ratio being able to be maintained at half of the sites. We also calculated the phenological shifts that would be required (both backward for an earlier shift in nesting and forward for a later shift) to keep up with present-day incubation temperatures, hatching success rates, and sex ratios. The required shifts backward in nesting for incubation temperatures ranged from −20 to −191 days, whereas the required shifts forward ranged from +54 to +180 days. However, for half of the sites, no matter the shift the median incubation temperature will always be warmer than the 75th percentile of current ranges. Given that phenological shifts will not be able to ameliorate predicted changes in temperature, hatching success and sex ratio at most sites, turtles may need to use other adaptive responses and/or there is the need to enhance sea turtle resilience to climate warming.18 página
AMMI analysis of the adaptability and yield stability of yellow passion fruit varieties
High yield stability and adaptability of yellow passion fruit varieties (Passiflora edulis Sims. f. flavicarpa Deg.) are highly desirable attributes when exploring different environments. This study aimed to evaluate the adaptability and yield stability of yellow passion fruit varieties using AMMI (additive main effects and multiplicative interaction) and other ancillary statistics. Twelve varieties were evaluated in eight environments. Analysis of variance showed effects attributable to the varieties (G), environment (E) and their interaction (G × E). The first two multiplicative components of the interaction accounted for 69% of the sum of squares. The scores of the principal interaction components showed high variability for the environments relative to the variety effects. High varietal phenotypic stability was observed in three environments; which can be used in yellow passion fruit breeding programs for initial selection trials. A biplot-AMMI analysis and yield stability index incorporating the AMMI stability value and yield capacity in a single non-parametric index were useful for discriminating genotypes with superior and stable fruit yield. AMMI analysis also allowed for the identification of more productive varieties in specific environments, leading to significant increase in passion fruit productivity
Proteção do cafeeiro contra cercosporiose por acibenzolar-S-metil e proteína harpina
O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar, em cafeeiro suscetível, a proteção contra a cercosporiose, pela aplicação da proteína harpina e acibenzolar-S-metil (ASM), e avaliar seu efeito na germinação de conídios e crescimento micelial in vitro. No primeiro experimento, cafeeiros tratados com ASM (25, 50, 100, 200 μg mL-1) receberam o inóculo de uma suspensão de conídios de Cercospora coffeicola, e a severidade da doença foi avaliada aos 30 e 60 dias após a inoculação. No segundo experimento, cafeeiros foram aspergidos com harpina (7,5, 15, 30, 60, 120 μg mL-1), tendo-se utilizado o mesmo procedimento. No terceiro experimento, plantas aspergidas previamente com ASM (200 μg mL-1) ou harpina (15 μg mL-1) foram tratadas novamente com esses produtos, aos 30 dias após terem recebido inóculo do patógeno. ASM e harpina protegeram os cafeeiros contra cercosporiose 30 dias após a inoculação com C. coffeicola. Entretanto, 60 dias após a inoculação, apenas o ASM (200 μg mL-1), com uma ou duas aplicações, protegeu as plantas contra C. coffeicola. Os cafeeiros foram protegidos contra cercosporiose, em reaplicação de harpina, 30 dias após o primeiro tratamento com essa proteína. Harpina e acibenzolar-S-metil não inibiram o desenvolvimento micelial nem a germinação in vitro dos conídios do patógeno
Global data on earthworm abundance, biomass, diversity and corresponding environmental properties
14 p.Earthworms are an important soil taxon as ecosystem engineers, providing a variety of crucial ecosystem functions and services. Little is known about their diversity and distribution at large spatial scales, despite the availability of considerable amounts of local-scale data. Earthworm diversity data, obtained from the primary literature or provided directly by authors, were collated with information on site locations, including coordinates, habitat cover, and soil properties. Datasets were required, at a minimum, to include abundance or biomass of earthworms at a site. Where possible, site-level species lists were included, as well as the abundance and biomass of individual species and ecological groups. This global dataset contains 10,840 sites, with 184 species, from 60 countries and all continents except Antarctica. The data were obtained from 182 published articles, published between 1973 and 2017, and 17 unpublished datasets. Amalgamating data into a single global database will assist researchers in investigating and answering a wide variety of pressing questions, for example, jointly assessing aboveground and belowground biodiversity distributions and drivers of biodiversity change
NEOTROPICAL XENARTHRANS: a data set of occurrence of xenarthran species in the Neotropics
Xenarthrans – anteaters, sloths, and armadillos – have essential functions for ecosystem maintenance, such as insect control and nutrient cycling, playing key roles as ecosystem engineers. Because of habitat loss and fragmentation, hunting pressure, and conflicts with 24 domestic dogs, these species have been threatened locally, regionally, or even across their full distribution ranges. The Neotropics harbor 21 species of armadillos, ten anteaters, and six sloths. Our dataset includes the families Chlamyphoridae (13), Dasypodidae (7), Myrmecophagidae (3), Bradypodidae (4), and Megalonychidae (2). We have no occurrence data on Dasypus pilosus (Dasypodidae). Regarding Cyclopedidae, until recently, only one species was recognized, but new genetic studies have revealed that the group is represented by seven species. In this data-paper, we compiled a total of 42,528 records of 31 species, represented by occurrence and quantitative data, totaling 24,847 unique georeferenced records. The geographic range is from the south of the USA, Mexico, and Caribbean countries at the northern portion of the Neotropics, to its austral distribution in Argentina, Paraguay, Chile, and Uruguay. Regarding anteaters, Myrmecophaga tridactyla has the most records (n=5,941), and Cyclopes sp. has the fewest (n=240). The armadillo species with the most data is Dasypus novemcinctus (n=11,588), and the least recorded for Calyptophractus retusus (n=33). With regards to sloth species, Bradypus variegatus has the most records (n=962), and Bradypus pygmaeus has the fewest (n=12). Our main objective with Neotropical Xenarthrans is to make occurrence and quantitative data available to facilitate more ecological research, particularly if we integrate the xenarthran data with other datasets of Neotropical Series which will become available very soon (i.e. Neotropical Carnivores, Neotropical Invasive Mammals, and Neotropical Hunters and Dogs). Therefore, studies on trophic cascades, hunting pressure, habitat loss, fragmentation effects, species invasion, and climate change effects will be possible with the Neotropical Xenarthrans dataset
