Small-town factories and the metropolis: Manufacturing dispersal in Bogotá, Colombia, 1958-1990

The research focuses on the capital city of Colombia, Bogota, where, somewhat unusually in Latin America the nation's population and wealth continued to concentrate at a markedly faster and more sustained pace than in most large cities in the country in the period 1958-1990. Contrary to evidence from large cities in both the developed and the developing world there was little sign of a major dispersal of employment beyond a relatively small central sector. The research aims firstly to document shifts during the study period in manufacturing production and employment within what it defines as the 'Bogota metropolitan area' (BMA); and secondly, to examine the possible reasons behind the lack of a more marked spatial dispersal of manufacturing jobs. Thus, the study seeks to answer the question: Why, despite Bogota's sustained economic and demographic growth in the period 1958-1990, did manufacturing industry disperse only very moderately within the Bogota metropolitan area? Apart from an extensive coverage of the theoretical and empirical material on the subject, the study uses a combination of secondary material represented by a range of studies on the subject, and primary information, which includes spatially and sectorally-disaggregated official data on manufacturing industry, information collected through a specially-designed survey of a sample of manufacturing establishments equally distributed between the core and the rest of the BMA, and interviews with national and local government officials. A series of hypotheses are tested for the case study using well known techniques such as shift-share and correlation analysis. The results of the field survey are used to examine how a range of factor costs are linked to the locational trends of a group of randomly selected establishments both in the core of the BMA and outside it. The study examines in turn the market orientation of the interviewed establishments, their present and future space needs, the incidence of labour factors upon their location, and an array of variables that may collectively be labelled 'government factors' as their availability is directly or indirectly dependent on official policies

Percutaneous Closure of Patent Foramen Ovale after Anterior Spinal Cord Infarction

    Get PDF
In patients with a patent foramen ovale (PFO) who have had a cryptogenic ischemic stroke, percutaneous closure reduces its recurrence risk. However, its role in spinal cord infarction (SCI) is less well-established. A few case reports describe the putative causative role of PFO in SCI. We present a case of a teenager with cryptogenic anterior SCI in the setting of a deep vein thrombosis and a high risk-PFO who underwent successful percutaneous closure.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Enteropathogenic parasites are of significant concern for public health due to their zoonotic potential and their impact on human and animal health. In this study, we investigated their occurrence and characterized these enteropathogens in asymptomatic domestic ruminants from Portugal. A total of 302 stool samples were collected from cattle (n = 166), sheep (n = 73), and goats (n = 63) in various regions of Portugal and tested for Cryptosporidium spp., Giardia duodenalis, Enterocytozoon bieneusi, Blastocystis sp., and Balantioides coli by PCR. The occurrence of Cryptosporidium spp. was found to be 12.7% (8/63, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 5.65–23.5) in goats; however, no sample was found to be positive for Cryptosporidium spp. in cattle and sheep. For E. bieneusi, 6.35% (4/63; 95%CI: 1.76–15.47) of goats were found to be positive; however, no cattle or sheep were found to be positive. Blastocystis sp. was found in sheep (9.59%; 7/73; 95% [CI]: 0.394–18.76) and goats (12.70%; 8/63; 95% [CI]: 5.65–23.50) but none was found in cattle. No positive results for G. duodenalis or B. coli were detected in this study. This study provides essential baseline information for understanding the silent shedding and epidemiology of these enteropathogens in Portugal, contributing to overall livestock health and related occupational safety. Raising awareness among consumers, veterinarians, and farm owners is crucial to minimize the risk of transmission and promote effective disease control strategies. This research was funded by the Fundação para Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT), grant number 2021.09461.BD.Sérgio Santos-Silva thanks the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) for the financial support of his PhD work under the 2021 scholarship, 09461.BD contract through the Maria de Sousa-2021 program. Buffer capacity evaluating - A collaborative experiment.

    Get PDF
The aim of this work is to show an experiment from which students can learn some of the main characteristics of buffer solutions. A mixture of some acid-base indicators, named as Yamada's indicator, can be used to estimate pH values in an acid-base titration of a buffer, with good approximation, In the experiment it is also possible to verify the relationship between the buffer capacity and the concentrations and the molar ratio of the components of a NH3 / NH4+ buffer solution. The shortage of experiments associated with the relative small importance given to many aspects of buffer solutions, Is now explored with simplicity. In the proposed experiments, students prepare buffer solutions by themselves, calculate the pH, understand how acid-base indicators act and learn how buffer solutions work through graph constructed by sharing experimental data.23340540

Epidemiology of Porcine Circovirus Type 2 Circulating in Wild Boars of Portugal during the 2018–2020 Hunting Seasons Suggests the Emergence of Genotype 2d

Porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV-2) is associated with several syndromes affecting swine, also known as porcine-circovirus-associated diseases, of which post-weaning multi-systemic wasting syndrome stands out due to its high economic impact on swine production. Recent data suggest the increasing circulation of the PCV-2d genotype in several countries worldwide. To provide updated data on PCV-2 genotypes currently circulating in swine in Portugal, we screened wild boar stools collected from several districts across Portugal, during the 2018–2020 hunting seasons, for PCV-2 and genetically characterized detected strains. From a total of 76 stool samples of wild boar tested by PCR for the partial PCV-2 ORF2 gene, two sequences were obtained (2/76; 2.6%, 95% confidence interval: 0.032–9.18). Bidirectional sequencing showed that the sequences were 100% identical and both of the PCV-2d genotype, showing for the first time the presence of this genotype in Portugal. Monitoring wild PCV-2 reservoirs is important for both veterinary public health and economic reasons, since PCV-2 infection has a strong economic impact on the swine industry. © 2022 by the authors. Diversity of Zoanthids (Anthozoa: Hexacorallia) on Hawaiian Seamounts: Description of the Hawaiian Gold Coral and Additional Zoanthids

    Get PDF
The Hawaiian gold coral has a history of exploitation from the deep slopes and seamounts of the Hawaiian Islands as one of the precious corals commercialised in the jewellery industry. Due to its peculiar characteristic of building a scleroproteic skeleton, this zoanthid has been referred as Gerardia sp. (a junior synonym of Savalia Nardo, 1844) but never formally described or examined by taxonomists despite its commercial interest. While collection of Hawaiian gold coral is now regulated, globally seamounts habitats are increasingly threatened by a variety of anthropogenic impacts. However, impact assessment studies and conservation measures cannot be taken without consistent knowledge of the biodiversity of such environments. Recently, multiple samples of octocoral-associated zoanthids were collected from the deep slopes of the islands and seamounts of the Hawaiian Archipelago. The molecular and morphological examination of these zoanthids revealed the presence of at least five different species including the gold coral. Among these only the gold coral appeared to create its own skeleton, two other species are simply using the octocoral as substrate, and the situation is not clear for the final two species. Phylogenetically, all these species appear related to zoanthids of the genus Savalia as well as to the octocoral-associated zoanthid Corallizoanthus tsukaharai, suggesting a common ancestor to all octocoral-associated zoanthids. The diversity of zoanthids described or observed during this study is comparable to levels of diversity found in shallow water tropical coral reefs. Such unexpected species diversity is symptomatic of the lack of biological exploration and taxonomic studies of the diversity of seamount hexacorals
