    Quantitative genetics of growth traits in the edible snail, Helix aspersa MĂĽller

    Genetic parameters of adult weight, age at maturity (adult age), weight after hibernation and relative loss of weight during hibernation were estimated in a population of edible snails (Helix aspersa Müller). Eight thousand four hundred and eighthy three animals were sampled from 143 pairs for adult weight, 4 333 from 87 pairs for adult age and 2 256 from 123 pairs for traits after hibernation. An animal model taking into account all the relationships was used to estimate genetic parameters. Estimates were also computed from the covariances between full-sibs and parent offspring regressions to assess possible non-additive genetic effects. Heritabilities were high except for relative loss of weight during hibernation. Estimates from the animal model were 0.48 ± 0.04 for adult weight, 0.40 ± 0.05 for adult age, 0.40 ± 0.05 for weight after hibernation and 0.12 ± 0.03 for relative loss of weight during hibernation. Adult weight and adult age were neither phenotypically nor genetically correlated (0.05 and 0.003 ± 0.07, respectively). A substantial maternal effect, especially on adult weight was found.Les paramètres génétiques de plusieurs caractères de croissance ont été estimés dans une population d’escargots Petit-Gris (Helix aspersa Müller). Il s’agit du poids adulte, de l’âge à maturité (âge adulte), du poids après hibernation et de la perte relative de poids lors de l’hibernation. Le nombre d’observations collectées se répartit ainsi : 8 483 animaux issus de 143 couples pour le poids adulte, 4 333 issus de 87 couples pour l’âge adulte et 2 256 issus de 123 couples pour les caractères mesurés après hibernation. Afin de tenir compte de toutes les relations de parenté, nous avons utilisé un modèle animal pour estimer les paramètres génétiques. Ils ont également été estimés à partir des covariances entre plein-frères et de la régression parents-descendants. Cela nous a permis de discuter des effets génétiques non additifs. Tous les caractères sauf la perte de poids relative lors de l’hibernation révèlent des héritabilités élevées. Les estimations issues du modèle animal sont de 0,48 ± 0,04 pour le poids adulte, 0,40 ± 0,05 pour l’âge adulte, 0,40 ± 0,05 pour le poids après hibernation et 0, 12 ± 0 03 pour la perte relative de poids lors de l’hibernation. Il n’y a pas de corrélation (ni phénotypique, ni génétique) significative entre le poids et l’âge adultes (0,05 et 0,003 ± 0,07, respectivement).     Maintenance or change? Examining the reinforcing spiral between social media news use and populist attitudes

    Citizens around the world increasingly express support for populism. Here, we apply the reinforcing spirals model to examine whether, and how, social media news use shapes populist attitudes over time. Specifically, we assess if using social media as a news source serves to maintain existing populist attitudes or facilitates a shift in attitudes to a more extreme position. A cross-sectional survey (N = 195) highlighted a positive correlation between social media news use and populist attitudes. A four-wave longitudinal survey (N = 386) further showed that this relationship reflects media and selection effects. Over a period of three months, more frequent social media news use predicted stronger populist attitudes at subsequent measuring points. In addition, higher levels of populist attitudes were related to more frequent social media news consumption in the following waves. However, the frequency of social media news use did not change over time and populist attitudes did not become stronger during the study period. Taken together, the findings indicate that social media news use contributed to the maintenance of populist attitudes at a stable level. There is no evidence to suggest social media news use predicted more extreme populist attitudes. We discuss these results with respect to the (potentially continued) rise of populism; we also critically reflect on the phenomenon of attitude polarization online. 1

    Controlling surface plasmon polaritons in transformed coordinates

    Transformational optics allow for a markedly enhanced control of the electromagnetic wave trajectories within metamaterials with interesting applications ranging from perfect lenses to invisibility cloaks, carpets, concentrators and rotators. Here, we present a review of curved anisotropic heterogeneous meta-surfaces designed using the tool of transformational plasmonics, in order to achieve a similar control for surface plasmon polaritons in cylindrical and conical carpets, as well as cylindrical cloaks, concentrators and rotators of a non-convex cross-section. Finally, we provide an asymptotic form of the geometric potential for surface plasmon polaritons on such surfaces in the limit of small curvature.Comment: 14 pages, 9 figure

    Techno-Economic and Life Cycle Impacts Analysis of Direct Methanation of Glycerol to Bio-Synthetic Natural Gas at a Biodiesel Refinery

    An economic and environmental feasibility study were carried out on the thermochemical conversion of glycerol to medium methane content biological synthetic natural gas (bio-SNG). A plant that processed 497 kg·h‾¹ of glycerol to bio-SNG was modelled as an on-site addition to a soybean biodiesel plant based in Missouri (USA) that produced 30 million litres of soybean biodiesel per year. Assuming the glycerol contained only 80 wt% free glycerol, the bio-SNG could substitute up to 24% of the natural gas at the soybean biodiesel plant. The discounted cash flow analysis showed it was possible to generate positive NPVs and achieve internal rates of return within the hurdle rate (12%) for biomass gasification technologies. From the environmental analysis it was found that the bio-SNG could reduce global warming potential by 28% when compared to conventional natural gas in the USA and translates to roughly 7% reduction in biodiesel natural gas emissions, if the maximum 24% of natural gas were to be substituted by bio-SNG. The work highlights the potential to divert waste glycerol to an onsite energy vector at soybean biodiesel plants with minimal change to the main biodiesel production process and potential reductions to soybean biodiesel global warming potential

    Exposure of mediterranean countries to ocean acidification

    This study examines the potential effects of ocean acidification on countries and fisheries of the Mediterranean Sea. The implications for seafood security and supply are evaluated by examining the sensitivity of the Mediterranean to ocean acidification at chemical, biological, and macro-economic levels. The limited information available on impacts of ocean acidification on harvested (industrial, recreational, and artisanal fishing) and cultured species (aquaculture) prevents any biological impact assessment. However, it appears that non-developed nations around the Mediterranean, particularly those for which fisheries are increasing, yet rely heavily on artisanal fleets, are most greatly exposed to socioeconomic consequences from ocean acidification. © 2014 by the authors; licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland

    Tunable Nb Superconducting Resonator Based on a Constriction Nano- SQUID Fabricated with a Ne Focused Ion Beam

    Hybrid superconducting-spin systems offer the potential to combine highly coherent atomic quantum systems with the scalability of superconducting circuits. To fully exploit this potential requires a high-quality-factor microwave resonator, tunable in frequency and able to operate at magnetic fields optimal for the spin system. Such magnetic fields typically rule out conventional Al -based Josephson-junction devices that have previously been used for tunable high- Q microwave resonators. The larger critical field of Nb allows microwave resonators with large field resilience to be fabricated. Here we demonstrate how constriction-type weak links, patterned in parallel into the central conductor of a Nb coplanar resonator with a neon focused ion beam, can be used to implement a frequency-tunable resonator. We study transmission through two such devices and show how they realize high-quality-factor, tunable, field-resilient devices that hold promise for future applications coupling to spin system

    Field observations of canopy flows over complex terrain

    The investigation of airflow over and within forests in complex terrain has been, until recently, limited to a handful of modelling and laboratory studies. Here, we present an observational dataset of airflow measurements inside and above a forest situated on a ridge on the Isle of Arran, Scotland. The spatial coverage of the observations all the way across the ridge makes this a unique dataset. Two case studies of across-ridge flow under near-neutral conditions are presented and compared with recent idealized two-dimensional modelling studies. Changes in the canopy profiles of both mean wind and turbulent quantities across the ridge are broadly consistent with these idealized studies. Flow separation over the lee slope is seen as a ubiquitous feature of the flow. The three-dimensional nature of the terrain and the heterogeneous forest canopy does however lead to significant variations in the flow separation across the ridge, particularly over the less steep western slope. Furthermore, strong directional shear with height in regions of flow separation has a significant impact on the Reynolds stress terms and other turbulent statistics. Also observed is a decrease in the variability of the wind speed over the summit and lee slope, which has not been seen in previous studies. This dataset should provide a valuable resource for validating models of canopy flow over real, complex terrain
