Authentic Youth and Young Adult Partnerships: Broadening the Narrative of LGBTQ Youth Homelessness

    Get PDF
Lived experience generates knowledge not available through formal education and training. If lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) youth and young adults (YYA) experiencing homelessness are to be effectively engaged, their needs met, and their successful transition out of homelessness facilitated, they must be partners in the creation of solutions meant to help them. That means that everyone working to address LGBTQ YYA homelessness – including policymakers, government officials, advocates, researchers, and service providers – need to understand how to partner authentically with YYA experiencing homelessness. This article will introduce a framework for authentic YYA partnerships, describe the philosophy and values underlying the True Colors Fund’s successful partnerships with YYA, and provide examples of how YYA partnerships have informed our work, and as a result the communities we work with. It will discuss how, through the organization’s partnerships with YYA, we have recognized the importance of (1) broadening the narrative about LGBTQ youth homelessness to include the various intersecting reasons LGBTQ youth become homeless and (2) moving beyond a single paradigm of risk/victimization to include resilience and possibility

Urban Land Markets as Spatial Justice

    Get PDF
A common view is that urban land markets subtract from, or subvert, spatial justice in cities, with spatial justice thus a definable outcome of market functions. This article explores urban land markets as spatial justice, which is multi-dimensional and subjective and integral to the functioning of markets. Seen from this perspective, urban land markets present a very particular way in which the ‚happening‘ of spatial justice unfolds. Thinking of urban land markets in this way offers considerable value to being able to grasp the ways in which they both configure and constitute spatial justice, and thus broadens our understanding of their emancipatory or conservative potential in urban development. While a distributional understanding of justice represents a fundamental tenet of much progressive thinking, in which the fairness of outcome is seen as fundamentally more important than that of the process, we argue that there is considerable benefit in viewing spatial justice as a process of the struggle to lay claim to place or space. Viewed this way, urban land markets represent a key context within which that struggle occurs, but interventions designed to improve spatial justice must focus on the social relations that inform that struggle as much or more than on land markets themselves

The materials based on mixed GeTe/Sb2Te3 alloys show remarkable switchable opto-electronic properties between their amorphous and crystalline phases. They are therefore successfully implemented in rewritable optical DVD and Blu-Ray disks and are currently under intense investigation for future memory and photonic applications. Recently, it was shown that nanostructuring these alloys by growing GeTe and Sb2Te3 in the form of superlattices considerably improves the performance of the resulting phase-change memories. Despite this significant advance the origin of the improvement and the detailed switching mechanism were not clearly understood. Hence, the focus of this thesis is on the growth and characterization of such superlattices. Using particularly transmission electron microscopy the detailed crystal structure of such multilayers has been analyzed and explained in terms of the bonding nature of the alloys. Several switching mechanisms of superlattice phase-change memory in the literature were debated and shown that they were inconsistent with the actual structure of the films. In addition, it was shown that GeTe/Sb2Te3 superlattices can be an interesting platform to study mixed GeTe/Sb2Te3 alloys by illustrating in detail its thermal reconfiguration. In the final parts of the thesis the thin film growth is discussed with particular focus on engineering the substrate-film interface. In general, the results shed light on the structure and switching mechanism of GeTe/Sb2Te3 superlattice phase-change memories and pave way for growth of similar materials for ferroelectric, spintronic and thermoelectric applications

Using Mixed Methods to Identify Delirium Bundle Care in the Intensive Care Unit

    Get PDF
Delirium is a serious complication experienced by patients in the intensive care unit (ICU). Over the past 15 years, researchers have identified risk factors, assessment techniques, pharmacological, and nonpharmacological interventions. Despite the current literature, there is a gap regarding delirium bundle care provided by an interprofessional team. This dissertation, a compendium of three manuscripts, delineates delirium bundle care by the interprofessional team in the ICU. The first manuscript details Rodgers’ Evolutionary Concept Analysis to identify attributes, antecedents, consequences, surrogate concepts, and related terms of bundled delirium care in the ICU. The second manuscript utilized the Social Ecological Model to identify factors that prevent or facilitate delirium bundle care in the ICU based on behavioral determinants and environmental factors. The third manuscript details a convergent parallel mixed-‐method study guided by Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research to explore clinical perceptions, roles, and practices of the surgical ICU interprofessional team regarding delirium bundle implementation. Findings from the first study used Rodgers’ Evolutionary View of Concept Analysis to identify attributes, antecedents, and consequences of delirium bundle care. Results from the second manuscript identify the facilitators and barriers based on the Social Ecological Model for implementing the ABCDEF bundle and PAD guidelines for managing delirium in the ICU. The findings from the convergent parallel mixed-‐method study identified factors associated with domains from the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research. Results from this study showed that structural and cultural elements of an ICU need to be considered when exploring how the interprofessional team of nurses, physicians, pharmacists, respiratory therapists, and physical therapists implements the ABCDEF bundle. The findings of the three manuscripts are integrated in the conclusion of this dissertation
