    Encodings of bounded LTL model checking in effectively propositional logic

    We present an encoding of LTL bounded model checking problems within the Bernays-Schönfinkel fragment of first-order logic. This fragment, which also corresponds to the category of effectively propositional problems (EPR) of the CASC system competitions, allows a natural and succinct representation of both a software/hardware system and the property that one wants to verify. The encoding for the transition system produces a formula whose size is linear with respect to its original description in common component description languages used in the field (e.g. smv format) preserving its modularity and hierarchical structure. Likewise, the LTL property is encoded in a formula of linear size with respect to the input formula, plus an additional component, with a size of O(log k) where k is the bound, that represents the execution flow of the system. The encoding of bounded model checking problems by effectively propositional formulae is the main contribution of this paper. As a side effect, we obtain a rich collection of benchmarks with close links to real-life applications for the automated reasoning community. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2007

    New regulations regarding Postgraduate Medical Training in Spain: perception of the tutor's role in the Murcia Region

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Recently introduced regulatory changes have expanded the Tutor role to include their primary responsibility for Postgraduate Medical Training (PMT). However, accreditation and recognition of that role has been devolved to the autonomic regions. The opinions of the RT may be relevant to future decisions;</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A comprehensive questionnaire, including demographic characteristics, academic and research achievement and personal views about their role, was sent to 201 RTs in the Murcia Region of Spain. The responses are described using median and interquartile ranges (IQR);</p> <p>Results</p> <p>There were 147 replies (response rate 73%), 69% male, mean age 45 ± 7 yrs. RTs perception of the residents' initial knowledge and commitment throughout the program was 5 (IQR 4-6) and 7 (IQR 5-8), respectively. As regards their impact on the PMT program, RTs considered that their own contribution was similar to that of senior residents. RTs perception of how their role was recognised was 5 (IQR 3-6). Only 16% did not encounter difficulties in accessing specific RT training programs. Regarding the RTs view of their various duties, supervision of patient care was accorded the greatest importance (64%) while the satisfactory completion of the PMT program and supervision of day-to-day activities were also considered important (61% and 59% respectively). The main RT requirements were: a greater professional recognition (97%), protected time (95%), specific RT training programs (95%) and financial recognition (86%);</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>This comprehensive study, reflecting the feelings of our RTs, provides a useful insight into the reality of their work and the findings ought to be taken into consideration in the imminent definitive regulatory document on PMT.</p

    Coarse graining ππ scattering

    We carry out an analysis of ππ scattering in the I J = 00, 11 and 20 channels in configuration space up to a maximal center-of-mass energy √ s = 1.4 GeV. We separate the interaction into two regions marked by an elementarity radius of the system; namely, a long distance region above which pions can be assumed to interact as elementary particles and a short distance region where many physical effects cannot be disentangled. The long distance interaction is described by chiral dynamics, where a two-pionexchange potential is identified, computed and compared to lattice calculations. The short distance piece corresponds to a coarse grained description exemplified by a superposition of delta-shell potentials sampling the interaction with the minimal wavelength. We show how the so constructed nonperturbative scattering amplitude complies with the proper analytic structure, allowing for an explicit N/D type decomposition in terms of the corresponding Jost functions and fulfilling dispersion relations without subtractions. We also address renormalization issues in coordinate space and investigate the role of crossing when fitting the scattering amplitudes above and below threshold to Roy-equation results. At higher energies, we show how inelasticities can be described by one single complex and energy dependent parameter.     Compositional Satisfiability Solving in Separation Logic

    We introduce a novel decision procedure to the satisfiability problem in array separation logic combined with general inductively defined predicates and arithmetic. Our proposal differentiates itself from existing works by solving satisfiability through compositional reasoning. First, following Fermat’s method of infinite descent, it infers for every inductive definition a “base” that precisely characterises the satisfiability. It then utilises the base to derive such a base for any formula where these inductive predicates reside in. Especially, we identify an expressive decidable fragment for the compositionality. We have implemented the proposal in a tool and evaluated it over challenging problems. The experimental results show that the compositional satisfiability solving is efficient and our tool is effective and efficient when compared with existing solvers

    Interventions in health organisations to reduce the impact of adverse events in second and third victims

    Background Adverse events (AE) are also the cause of suffering in health professionals involved. This study was designed to identify and analyse organization-level strategies adopted in both primary care and hospitals in Spain to address the impact of serious AE on second and third victims. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted in healthcare organizations assessing: safety culture; health organization crisis management plans for serious AE; actions planned to ensure transparency in communication with patients (and relatives) who experience an AE; support for second victims; and protective measures to safeguard the institution’s reputation (the third victim). Results A total of 406 managers and patient safety coordinators replied to the survey. Deficient provision of support for second victims was acknowledged by 71 and 61 % of the participants from hospitals and primary care respectively; these respondents reported there was no support protocol for second victims in place in their organizations. Regarding third victim initiatives, 35 % of hospital and 43 % of primary care professionals indicated no crisis management plan for serious AE existed in their organization, and in the case of primary care, there was no crisis committee in 34 % of cases. The degree of implementation of second and third victim support interventions was perceived to be greater in hospitals (mean 14.1, SD 3.5) than in primary care (mean 11.8, SD 3.1) (p?<?0.001).
