A solution for galactic disks with Yukawian gravitational potential
We present a new solution for the rotation curves of galactic disks with
gravitational potential of the Yukawa type. We follow the technique employed by
Toomre in 1963 in the study of galactic disks in the Newtonian theory. This new
solution allows an easy comparison between the Newtonian solution and the
Yukawian one. Therefore, constraints on the parameters of theories of
gravitation can be imposed, which in the weak field limit reduce to Yukawian
potentials. We then apply our formulae to the study of rotation curves for a
zero-thickness exponential disk and compare it with the Newtonian case studied
by Freeman in 1970. As an application of the mathematical tool developed here,
we show that in any theory of gravity with a massive graviton (this means a
gravitational potential of the Yukawa type), a strong limit can be imposed on
the mass (m_g) of this particle. For example, in order to obtain a galactic
disk with a scale length of b ~ 10 kpc, we should have a massive graviton of
m_g << 10^{-59} g. This result is much more restrictive than those inferred

Ultrasound imaging of the rabbit peroneal nerve
Ultrasound imaging of peripheral nerves is increasingly used in the clinic for a wide range of applications. Although yet unapplied for experimental neuroscience, it also has potential value in this research area. This study explores the feasibility, possibilities and limitations of this technique in rabbits, with special focus on peripheral nerve regeneration after trauma. The peroneal nerve of 25 New Zealand White rabbits was imaged at varying time intervals after a crush lesion. The ultrasonic appearance of the nerve was determined, and recordings were validated with in vivo anatomy. Nerve swelling at the lesion site was estimated from ultrasound images and compared with anatomical parameters. The peroneal nerve could reliably be identified in all animals, and its course and anatomical variations agreed perfectly with anatomy. Nerve diameters from ultrasound were related to in vivo diameters (p < 0.001, R2 = 77%), although the prediction interval was rather wide. Nerve thickenings could be visualized and preliminary results indicate that ultrasound can differentiate between neuroma formation and external nerve thickening. The value of the technique for experimental neuroscience is discussed. We conclude that ultrasound imaging of the rabbit peroneal nerve is feasible and that it is a promising tool for different research areas within the field of experimental neuroscience

Scalar field "mini--MACHOs": a new explanation for galactic dark matter
We examine the possibility that galactic halos are collisionless ensembles of
scalar field ``massive compact halo objects'' (MACHOs). Using mass constraints
from MACHO microlensing and from theoretical arguments on halos made up of
massive black holes, as well as demanding also that scalar MACHO ensambles of
all scales do not exhibit gravothermal instability (as required by consistency
with observations of LSB galaxies), we obtain the range: m\alt 10^{-7}
M_\odot or 30 M_\odot\alt m\alt 100 M_\odot. The rather narrow mass range of
large MACHOs seems to indicate that the ensambles we are suggesting should be
probably made up of scalar MACHOs in the low mass range (``mini--MACHOs''). The
proposed model allows one to consider a non--baryonic and non--thermal
fundamental nature of dark matter, while at the same time keeping the same

Nuclear transparency from quasielastic A(e,e'p) reactions uo to Q^2=8.1 (GeV/c)^2
The quasielastic (e,ep) reaction was studied on targets of
deuterium, carbon, and iron up to a value of momentum transfer of 8.1
(GeV/c). A nuclear transparency was determined by comparing the data to
calculations in the Plane-Wave Impulse Approximation. The dependence of the
nuclear transparency on and the mass number was investigated in a
search for the onset of the Color Transparency phenomenon. We find no evidence
for the onset of Color Transparency within our range of . A fit to the
world's nuclear transparency data reflects the energy dependence of the free

154215.pdf (publisher's version ) (Open Access)BACKGROUND: The Control of Allergic Rhinitis and Asthma Test (CARAT) monitors control of asthma and allergic rhinitis. AIMS: To determine the CARAT's minimal clinically important difference (MCID) and to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Dutch CARAT. METHODS: CARAT was applied in three measurements at 1-month intervals. Patients diagnosed with asthma and/or rhinitis were approached. MCID was evaluated using Global Rating of Change (GRC) and standard error of measurement (s.e.m.). Cronbach's alpha was used to evaluate internal consistency. Spearman's correlation coefficients were calculated between CARAT, the Asthma Control Questionnaire (ACQ5) and the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) on airway symptoms to determine construct and longitudinal validity. Test-retest reliability was evaluated with intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC). Changes in pollen counts were compared with delta CARAT and ACQ5 scores. RESULTS: A total of 92 patients were included. The MCID of the CARAT was 3.50 based on GRC scores; the s.e.m. was 2.83. Cronbach's alpha was 0.82. Correlation coefficients between CARAT and ACQ5 and VAS questions ranged from 0.64 to 0.76 (P < 0.01). Longitudinally, correlation coefficients between delta CARAT scores and delta ACQ5 and VAS scores ranged from 0.41 to 0.67 (P < 0.01). Test-retest reliability showed an ICC of 0.81 (P < 0.01) and 0.80 (P < 0.01). Correlations with pollen counts were higher for CARAT than for ACQ5. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first investigation of the MCID of the CARAT. The CARAT uses a whole-point scale, which suggests that the MCID is 4 points. The CARAT is a valid and reliable tool that is also applicable in the Dutch population
Genome-Wide Association Study in BRCA1 Mutation Carriers Identifies Novel Loci Associated with Breast and Ovarian Cancer Risk
BRCA1-associated breast and ovarian cancer risks can be modified by common genetic variants. To identify further cancer risk-modifying loci, we performed a multi-stage GWAS of 11,705 BRCA1 carriers (of whom 5,920 were diagnosed with breast and 1,839 were diagnosed with ovarian cancer), with a further replication in an additional sample of 2,646 BRCA1 carriers. We identified a novel breast cancer risk modifier locus at 1q32 for BRCA1 carriers (rs2290854, P = 2.7×10-8, HR = 1.14, 95% CI: 1.09-1.20). In addition, we identified two novel ovarian cancer risk modifier loci: 17q21.31 (rs17631303, P = 1.4×10-8, HR = 1.27, 95% CI: 1.17-1.38) and 4q32.3 (rs4691139, P = 3.4×10-8, HR = 1.20, 95% CI: 1.17-1.38).
