Multiple Sublineages of Influenza A Virus (H5N1), Vietnam, 2005−2007
Clade 2.3.4 viruses that are dominant in southern China have now spread to northern Vietnam
Molecular epidemiology of clade 1 influenza A viruses (H5N1), southern Indochina Peninsula, 2004-2007
To determine the origin of influenza A virus (H5N1) epizootics in Cambodia, we used maximum-likelihood and Bayesian methods to analyze the genetic sequences of subtype H5N1 strains from Cambodia and neighboring areas. Poultry movements, rather than repeated reintroduction of subtype H5N1 viruses by wild birds, appear to explain virus circulation and perpetuation
New Lymphogranuloma Venereum Chlamydia trachomatis Variant, Amsterdam
We retrospectively conducted a study of men who have sex with men who visited the Amsterdam, the Netherlands, sexually transmitted diseases clinic from January 2002 to December 2003 and had rectal Chlamydia trachomatis infections. We found that symptomatic (73%) as well as asymptomatic (43%) patients were infected with a new C. trachomatis LGV variant
Production of Massless Fermions during Inflation
We compute the one loop self energy, in a locally de Sitter background, for a
massless fermion which is Yukawa-coupled to a massless, minimally coupled
scalar. We then solve the modified Dirac equation resulting from inclusion of
the self energy. We find faster-than-exponential growth in the fermion wave
function, consistent with the production of fermions through a process in which
a scalar and a fermion-anti-fermion pair are ripped out of the vacuum by
inflation.Comment: 17 pages, LaTeX 2e, 1 figure. The first 15 pages gives the text of

CONCLUSION
The aminobisphosphonate pamidronate controls influenza pathogenesis by expanding a γδ T cell population in humanized mice
As shown in humanized mice, a population of Vγ9Vδ2 T cells can reduce the severity and mortality of disease caused by infection with human and avian influenza viruses
Loop-Mediated Isothermal Amplification for Influenza A (H5N1) Virus
We describe a 1-step reverse-transcription loop-mediated isothermal amplification assay for detection of highly pathogenic avian influenza A (H5N1) viruses. The assay was tested by using a panel of highly pathogenic H5N1 subtypes isolated over the past 10 years and clinical specimens. The assay produced negative results for all non-H5N1 subtypes
SARS Coronavirus Detection Methods
Using clinical samples from patients with severe acute respiratory syndrome, we showed that the sensitivities of a quantitative reverse transcription–polymerase chain reaction (80% for fecal samples and 25% for urine samples) were higher than those of the polyclonal (50% and 5%) and monoclonal (35% and 8%) antibody-based nucleocapsid antigen capture enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays
Effects of School Closures, 2008 Winter Influenza Season, Hong Kong
In winter 2008, kindergartens and primary schools in Hong Kong were closed for 2 weeks after media coverage indicated that 3 children had died, apparently from influenza. We examined prospective influenza surveillance data before, during, and after the closure. We did not find a substantial effect on community transmission
The unification of inflation and late-time acceleration in the frame of -essence
By using the formulation of the reconstruction, we explicitly construct
models of -essence, which unify the inflation in the early universe and the
late accelerating expansion of the present universe by a single scalar field.
Due to the higher derivative terms, the solution describing the unification can
be stable in the space of solutions, which makes the restriction for the
initial condition relaxed. The higher derivative terms also eliminate tachyon.
Therefore we can construct a model describing the time development, which
cannot be realized by a usual inflaton or quintessence models of the canonical
scalar field due to the instability or the existence of tachyon. We also
propose a mechanism of the reheating by the quantum effects coming from the
variation of the energy density of the scalar field.Comment: LaTeX, 13 pages, 10 figure
Poultry Drinking Water Used for Avian Influenza Surveillance
Samples of drinking water from poultry cages, which can be collected conveniently and noninvasively, provide higher rates of influenza (H9N2) virus isolation than do samples of fecal droppings. Studies to confirm the usefulness of poultry drinking water for detecting influenza (H5N1) should be conducted in disease-endemic areas
