Orbital Dependent Phase Control in Ca2-xSrxRuO4
We present first-principles studies on the orbital states of the layered
perovskites CaSrRuO. The crossover from antiferromagnetic (AF)
Mott insulator for to nearly ferromagnetic (FM) metal at is
characterized by the systematic change of the orbital occupation. For the
AF side (), we present firm evidence for the ferro-orbital
ordering. It is found that the degeneracy of (or ) states is
lifted robustly due to the two-dimensional (2D) crystal-structure, even without
the Jahn-Teller distortion of RuO. This effect dominates, and the
cooperative occupation of orbital is concluded. In contrast to recent
proposals, the resulting electronic structure explains well both the observed
X-ray absorption spectra and the double peak structure of optical conductivity.
For the FM side (), however, the orbital with half filling opens a
pseudo-gap in the FM state and contributes to the spin =1/2 moment (rather
than =1 for =0.0 case) dominantly, while states are itinerant
with very small spin polarization, explaining the recent neutron data
consistently.Comment: 17 pages, 5 figure
Distribution of graph-distances in Boltzmann ensembles of RNA secondary structures
Large RNA molecules often carry multiple functional domains whose spatial
arrangement is an important determinant of their function. Pre-mRNA splicing,
furthermore, relies on the spatial proximity of the splice junctions that can
be separated by very long introns. Similar effects appear in the processing of
RNA virus genomes. Albeit a crude measure, the distribution of spatial
distances in thermodynamic equilibrium therefore provides useful information on
the overall shape of the molecule can provide insights into the interplay of
its functional domains. Spatial distance can be approximated by the
graph-distance in RNA secondary structure. We show here that the equilibrium
distribution of graph-distances between arbitrary nucleotides can be computed
in polynomial time by means of dynamic programming. A naive implementation
would yield recursions with a very high time complexity of O(n^11). Although we
were able to reduce this to O(n^6) for many practical applications a further
reduction seems difficult. We conclude, therefore, that sampling approaches,
which are much easier to implement, are also theoretically favorable for most
real-life applications, in particular since these primarily concern long-range
interactions in very large RNA molecules.Comment: Peer-reviewed and presented as part of the 13th Workshop on

Equilibration processes in the Warm-Hot Intergalactic Medium
The Warm-Hot Intergalactic Medium (WHIM) is thought to contribute about 40-50
% to the baryonic budget at the present evolution stage of the universe. The
observed large scale structure is likely to be due to gravitational growth of
density fluctuations in the post-inflation era. The evolving cosmic web is
governed by non-linear gravitational growth of the initially weak density
fluctuations in the dark energy dominated cosmology. Non-linear structure
formation, accretion and merging processes, star forming and AGN activity
produce gas shocks in the WHIM. Shock waves are converting a fraction of the
gravitation power to thermal and non-thermal emission of baryonic/leptonic
matter. They provide the most likely way to power the luminous matter in the
WHIM. The plasma shocks in the WHIM are expected to be collisionless.
Collisionless shocks produce a highly non-equilibrium state with anisotropic
temperatures and a large differences in ion and electron temperatures. We
discuss the ion and electron heating by the collisionless shocks and then
review the plasma processes responsible for the Coulomb equilibration and
collisional ionisation equilibrium of oxygen ions in the WHIM. MHD-turbulence
produced by the strong collisionless shocks could provide a sizeable
non-thermal contribution to the observed Doppler parameter of the UV line
spectra of the WHIM.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in Space Science

Dynamics of Tachyon and Phantom Field beyond the Inverse Square Potentials
We investigate the cosmological evolution of the tachyon and phantom-tachyon
scalar field by considering the potential parameter () as a function of another potential parameter
(), which correspondingly extends the
analysis of the evolution of our universe from two-dimensional autonomous
dynamical system to the three-dimension. It allows us to investigate the more
general situation where the potential is not restricted to inverse square
potential and .One result is that, apart from the inverse square potential,
there are a large number of potentials which can give the scaling and dominant
solution when the function equals for one or some
values of as well as the parameter satisfies
condition Eq.(18) or Eq.(19). We also find that for a class of different
potentials the dynamics evolution of the universe are actually the same and
therefore undistinguishable.Comment: 8 pages, no figure, accepted by The European Physical Journal

Parametrization of Born-Infeld Type Phantom Dark Energy Model
Applying the parametrization of dark energy density, we can construct
directly independent-model potentials. In Born-Infeld type phantom dark energy
model, we consider four special parametrization equation of state parameter.
The evolutive behavior of dark energy density with respect to red-shift ,
potentials with respect to and are shown mathematically. Moreover,
we investigate the effect of parameter upon the evolution of the
constructed potential with respect to . These results show that the
evolutive behavior of constructed Born-Infeld type dark energy model is quite
different from those of the other models.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, Accepted for publication in Astrophysics & Space

Effects of macroscopic polarization in III-V nitride multi-quantum-wells
Huge built-in electric fields have been predicted to exist in wurtzite III-V
nitrides thin films and multilayers. Such fields originate from heterointerface
discontinuities of the macroscopic bulk polarization of the nitrides. Here we
discuss the background theory, the role of spontaneous polarization in this
context, and the practical implications of built-in polarization fields in
nitride nanostructures. To support our arguments, we present detailed
self-consistent tight-binding simulations of typical nitride QW structures in
which polarization effects are dominant.Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures, uses revtex/epsf. submitted to PR
Gammaretrovirus-mediated correction of SCID-X1 is associated with skewed vector integration site distribution in vivo
We treated 10 children with X-linked SCID (SCID-X1) using gammaretrovirus-mediated gene transfer. Those with sufficient follow-up were found to have recovered substantial immunity in the absence of any serious adverse events up to 5 years after treatment. To determine the influence of vector integration on lymphoid reconstitution, we compared retroviral integration sites (RISs) from peripheral blood CD3(+) T lymphocytes of 5 patients taken between 9 and 30 months after transplantation with transduced CD34(+) progenitor cells derived from 1 further patient and I healthy donor. Integration occurred preferentially in gene regions on either side of transcription start sites, was clustered, and correlated with the expression level in CD34(+) progenitors during transduction. In contrast to those in CD34(+) cells, RISs recovered from engrafted CD3(+)T cells were significantly overrepresented within or near genes encoding proteins with kinase or transferase activity or involved in phosphorus metabolism. Although gross patterns of gene expression were unchanged in transduced cells, the divergence of RIS target frequency between transduced progenitor cells and post-thymic T lymphocytes indicates that vector integration influences cell survival, engraftment, or proliferation
One-neutron removal reactions on neutron-rich psd-shell nuclei
A systematic study of high energy, one-neutron removal reactions on 23
neutron-rich, psd--shell nuclei (Z=5-9, A=12-25) has been carried out. The
longitudinal momentum distributions of the core fragments and corresponding
single-neutron removal cross sections are reported for reactions on a carbon
target. Extended Glauber model calculations, weighted by the spectroscopic
factors obtained from shell model calculations, are compared to the
experimental results. Conclusions are drawn regarding the use of such reactions
as a spectroscopic tool and spin-parity assignments are proposed for 15B, 17C,
19-21N, 21,23O, 23-25F. The nature of the weakly bound systems 14B and 15,17C
is discussed.Comment: 11 pages + 2 figure
Formation of superdense hadronic matter in high energy heavy-ion collisions
We present the detail of a newly developed relativistic transport model (ART
1.0) for high energy heavy-ion collisions. Using this model, we first study the
general collision dynamics between heavy ions at the AGS energies. We then show
that in central collisions there exists a large volume of sufficiently
long-lived superdense hadronic matter whose local baryon and energy densities
exceed the critical densities for the hadronic matter to quark-gluon plasma
transition. The size and lifetime of this matter are found to depend strongly
on the equation of state. We also investigate the degree and time scale of
thermalization as well as the radial flow during the expansion of the
superdense hadronic matter. The flow velocity profile and the temperature of
the hadronic matter at freeze-out are extracted. The transverse momentum and
rapidity distributions of protons, pions and kaons calculated with and without
the mean field are compared with each other and also with the preliminary data
from the E866/E802 collaboration to search for experimental observables that
are sensitive to the equation of state. It is found that these inclusive,
single particle observables depend weakly on the equation of state. The
difference between results obtained with and without the nuclear mean field is
only about 20\%. The baryon transverse collective flow in the reaction plane is
also analyzed. It is shown that both the flow parameter and the strength of the
``bounce-off'' effect are very sensitive to the equation of state. In
particular, a soft equation of state with a compressibility of 200 MeV results
in an increase of the flow parameter by a factor of 2.5 compared to the cascade
case without the mean field. This large effect makes it possible to distinguish
the predictions from different theoretical models and to detect the signaturesComment: 55 pages, latex, + 39 figures available upon reques
Modelling the prestress transfer in pre-tensioned concrete elements
Three models were developed to simulate the transfer of prestress force from steel to concrete in pre-tensioned concrete elements. The first is an analytical model based on the thick-walled cylinder theory and considers linear material properties for both steel and concrete. The second is an axi-symmetric finite element (FE) model with linear material properties; it is used to verify the analytical model. The third model is a three dimensional nonlinear FE model. This model considers the post-cracking behaviour of concrete as well as concrete shrinkage and the time of prestress releasing. A new expression from the analytical model is developed to estimate the transmission length as well as the stress distribution along the tendon. The paper also presents a parametric study to illustrate the impact of diameter of prestressing steel, concrete cover, concrete strength, initial prestress, section size, surface roughness of prestressing steel, time of prestress release, and the member length on the transfer of stress in pre-tensioned concrete elements
