Pareto and Boltzmann-Gibbs behaviors in a deterministic multi-agent system
A deterministic system of interacting agents is considered as a model for
economic dynamics. The dynamics of the system is described by a coupled map
lattice with near neighbor interactions. The evolution of each agent results
from the competition between two factors: the agent's own tendency to grow and
the environmental influence that moderates this growth. Depending on the values
of the parameters that control these factors, the system can display Pareto or
Boltzmann-Gibbs statistical behaviors in its asymptotic dynamical regime. The
regions where these behaviors appear are calculated on the space of parameters
of the system. Other statistical properties, such as the mean wealth, the
standard deviation, and the Gini coefficient characterizing the degree of
equity in the wealth distribution are also calculated on the space of

Neuropsychological constraints to human data production on a global scale
Which are the factors underlying human information production on a global
level? In order to gain an insight into this question we study a corpus of
252-633 Million publicly available data files on the Internet corresponding to
an overall storage volume of 284-675 Terabytes. Analyzing the file size
distribution for several distinct data types we find indications that the
neuropsychological capacity of the human brain to process and record
information may constitute the dominant limiting factor for the overall growth
of globally stored information, with real-world economic constraints having
only a negligible influence. This supposition draws support from the
observation that the files size distributions follow a power law for data
without a time component, like images, and a log-normal distribution for
multimedia files, for which time is a defining qualia.Comment: to be published in: European Physical Journal
Suppression of matching field effects by splay and pinning energy dispersion in YBa_2Cu_3O_7 with columnar defects
We report measurements of the irreversible magnetization M_i of a large
number of YBa_2Cu_3O_7 single crystals with columnar defects (CD). Some of them
exhibit a maximum in M_i when the density of vortices equals the density of
tracks, at temperatures above 40K. We show that the observation of these
matching field effects is constrained to those crystals where the orientational
and pinning energy dispersion of the CD system lies below a certain threshold.
The amount of such dispersion is determined by the mass and energy of the
irradiation ions, and by the crystal thickness. Time relaxation measurements
show that the matching effects are associated with a reduction of the creep
rate, and occur deep into the collective pinning regime.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.
A Monitor of Beam Polarization Profiles for the TRIUMF Parity Experiment
TRIUMF experiment E497 is a study of parity violation in pp scattering at an
energy where the leading term in the analyzing power is expected to vanish,
thus measuring a unique combination of weak-interaction flavour conserving
terms. It is desired to reach a level of sensitivity of 2x10^-8 in both
statistical and systematic errors. The leading systematic errors depend on
transverse polarization components and, at least, the first moment of
transverse polarization. A novel polarimeter that measures profiles of both

Magnetothermal Conductivity of Highly Oriented Pyrolytic Graphite in the Quantum Limit
We report on the magnetic field (0TT) dependence of the
longitudinal thermal conductivity of highly oriented pyrolytic
graphite in the temperature range 5 K 20 K for fields parallel to
the axis. We show that shows large oscillations in the
high-field region (B > 2 T) where clear signs of the Quantum-Hall effect are
observed in the Hall resistance. With the measured longitudinal electrical
resistivity we show that the Wiedemann-Franz law is violated in the high-field

Basic kinetic wealth-exchange models: common features and open problems
We review the basic kinetic wealth-exchange models of Angle [J. Angle, Social
Forces 65 (1986) 293; J. Math. Sociol. 26 (2002) 217], Bennati [E. Bennati,
Rivista Internazionale di Scienze Economiche e Commerciali 35 (1988) 735],
Chakraborti and Chakrabarti [A. Chakraborti, B. K. Chakrabarti, Eur. Phys. J. B
17 (2000) 167], and of Dragulescu and Yakovenko [A. Dragulescu, V. M.
Yakovenko, Eur. Phys. J. B 17 (2000) 723]. Analytical fitting forms for the
equilibrium wealth distributions are proposed. The influence of heterogeneity
is investigated, the appearance of the fat tail in the wealth distribution and
the relaxation to equilibrium are discussed. A unified reformulation of the

Dijet Rapidity Gaps in Photoproduction from Perturbative QCD
By defining dijet rapidity gap events according to interjet energy flow, we
treat the photoproduction cross section of two high transverse momentum jets
with a large intermediate rapidity region as a factorizable quantity in
perturbative QCD. We show that logarithms of soft gluon energy in the interjet
region can be resummed to all orders in perturbation theory. The resummed cross
section depends on the eigenvalues of a set of soft anomalous dimension
matrices, specific to each underlying partonic process, and on the
decomposition of the scattering according to the possible patterns of hard
color flow. We present a detailed discussion of both. Finally, we evaluate
numerically the gap cross section and gap fraction and compare the results with
ZEUS data. In the limit of low gap energy, good agreement with experiment is

Parity Violation in Proton-Proton Scattering
Measurements of parity-violating longitudinal analyzing powers (normalized
asymmetries) in polarized proton-proton scattering provide a unique window on
the interplay between the weak and strong interactions between and within
hadrons. Several new proton-proton parity violation experiments are presently
either being performed or are being prepared for execution in the near future:
at TRIUMF at 221 MeV and 450 MeV and at COSY (Kernforschungsanlage Juelich) at
230 MeV and near 1.3 GeV. These experiments are intended to provide stringent
constraints on the set of six effective weak meson-nucleon coupling constants,
which characterize the weak interaction between hadrons in the energy domain
where meson exchange models provide an appropriate description. The 221 MeV is
unique in that it selects a single transition amplitude (3P2-1D2) and
consequently constrains the weak meson-nucleon coupling constant h_rho{pp}. The
TRIUMF 221 MeV proton-proton parity violation experiment is described in some
detail. A preliminary result for the longitudinal analyzing power is Az = (1.1
+/-0.4 +/-0.4) x 10^-7. Further proton-proton parity violation experiments are
commented on. The anomaly at 6 GeV/c requires that a new multi-GeV

Keeping it in the family: Parental influences on young people's attitudes to police
Prior research finds young people are less satisfied with police than their older counterparts. Despite this, our understanding of youth attitudes to police is limited, as most research has focused on adult attitudes to police. This study adds to our understanding by examining the influence of parent–child dynamics on youth attitudes to police. We predict that youth attitudes to police will be influenced by their parents’ attitudes. A survey of 540 school students in South East Queensland reveals that perceived parental attitudes to police are associated with youth attitudes to police. However, this effect is partially mediated by maternal, but not paternal attachment. These findings suggest that youth attitudes to police are not simply influenced by contact with police and delinquency, but that familial context is important. Consequently, our theoretical understanding of youth attitudes to police must move beyond a focus upon police contact and delinquency
