    Resampling-based confidence regions and multiple tests for a correlated random vector

    We derive non-asymptotic confidence regions for the mean of a random vector whose coordinates have an unknown dependence structure. The random vector is supposed to be either Gaussian or to have a symmetric bounded distribution, and we observe nn i.i.d copies of it. The confidence regions are built using a data-dependent threshold based on a weighted bootstrap procedure. We consider two approaches, the first based on a concentration approach and the second on a direct boostrapped quantile approach. The first one allows to deal with a very large class of resampling weights while our results for the second are restricted to Rademacher weights. However, the second method seems more accurate in practice. Our results are motivated by multiple testing problems, and we show on simulations that our procedures are better than the Bonferroni procedure (union bound) as soon as the observed vector has sufficiently correlated coordinates.Comment: submitted to COL

Enrespuesta a los mismos, la presente investigación plantea dos aristas: por un lado, el análisis delos planes de acción desarrollados y a desarrollar por parte de la FACPCE y de las Universidadesargentinas respecto de la preparación de profesionales y por otro lado, el análisis de las complejasimplicancias prácticas innovadoras que traerá aparejada la primer fase de adopción obligatoria delas nuevas normas. El producto de la investigación pretende constituirse en una guía deimplementación que sugiera los pasos a seguir por los organismos profesionales y por lasinstituciones educativas universitarias de cara a la capacitación de los profesionales y estudiantesen NIIF.     Influence of thermomechanical processing parameters on critical temperatures to develop an Advanced High-Strength Steel microstructure

    A good selection of the thermomechanical processing parameters will optimize the function of alloying elements to get the most of mechanical properties in Advanced High-Strength Steels for automotive components, where high resistance is required for passenger safety. As such, critical processing temperatures must be defined taking into account alloy composition, in order for effective thermomechanical processing schedules to be designed. These critical temperatures mainly include the recrystallization stop temperature (T5%) and the transformation temperatures (Ar1, Ar3, Bs, etc.). These critical processing temperatures were characterized using different thermomechanical conditions. T5% was determined through the softening evaluation on double hit tests and the observation of prior austenite grain boundaries on the microstructure. Phase transformation temperatures were measured by dilatometry experiments at different cooling rates. The results indicate that the strain per pass and the interpass time will influence the most on the determination of T5%. The range of temperatures between the recrystallized and non-recrystallized regions can be as narrow as 30 °C at a higher amount of strain. The proposed controlled thermomechanical processing schedule involves getting a severely deformed austenite with a high dislocation density and deformation bands to increase the nucleation sites to start the transformation products. This microstructure along with a proper cooling strategy will lead to an enhancement in the final mechanical properties of a particular steel composition

    Do primordial Lithium abundances imply there's no Dark Energy?

    Explaining the well established observation that the expansion rate of the universe is apparently accelerating is one of the defining scientific problems of our age. Within the standard model of cosmology, the repulsive 'dark energy' supposedly responsible has no explanation at a fundamental level, despite many varied attempts. A further important dilemma in the standard model is the Lithium problem, which is the substantial mismatch between the theoretical prediction for 7-Li from Big Bang Nucleosynthesis and the value that we observe today. This observation is one of the very few we have from along our past worldline as opposed to our past lightcone. By releasing the untested assumption that the universe is homogeneous on very large scales, both apparent acceleration and the Lithium problem can be easily accounted for as different aspects of cosmic inhomogeneity, without causing problems for other cosmological phenomena such as the cosmic microwave background.     Recently experiments on high critical temperature superconductors has shown that the doping levels and the superconducting gap are usually not uniform properties but strongly dependent on their positions inside a given sample. Local superconducting regions develop at the pseudogap temperature (TT^*) and upon cooling, grow continuously. As one of the consequences a large diamagnetic signal above the critical temperature (TcT_c) has been measured by different groups. Here we apply a critical-state model for the magnetic response to the local superconducting domains between TT^* and TcT_c and show that the resulting diamagnetic signal is in agreement with the experimental results.Comment: published versio

    Origin and evolution of the light nuclides

    After a short historical (and highly subjective) introduction to the field, I discuss our current understanding of the origin and evolution of the light nuclides D, He-3, He-4, Li-6, Li-7, Be-9, B-10 and B-11. Despite considerable observational and theoretical progress, important uncertainties still persist for each and every one of those nuclides. The present-day abundance of D in the local interstellar medium is currently uncertain, making it difficult to infer the recent chemical evolution of the solar neighborhood. To account for the observed quasi-constancy of He-3 abundance from the Big Bang to our days, the stellar production of that nuclide must be negligible; however, the scarce observations of its abundance in planetary nebulae seem to contradict this idea. The observed Be and B evolution as primaries suggests that the source composition of cosmic rays has remained quasi-constant since the early days of the Galaxy, a suggestion with far reaching implications for the origin of cosmic rays; however, the main idea proposed to account for that constancy, namely that superbubbles are at the source of cosmic rays, encounters some serious difficulties. The best explanation for the mismatch between primordial Li and the observed "Spite-plateau" in halo stars appears to be depletion of Li in stellar envelopes, by some yet poorly understood mechanism. But this explanation impacts on the level of the recently discovered early ``Li-6 plateau'', which (if confirmed), seriously challenges current ideas of cosmic ray nucleosynthesis.Comment: 18 pages, 9 figs.     Long synthetic peptides and CpG-containing oligodeoxynucleotides are promising components for cancer vaccines. In this phase I trial, 19 patients received a mean of 8 (range 1-12) monthly vaccines s.c. composed of the long synthetic NY-ESO-179-108 peptide and CpG-B (PF-3512676), emulsified in Montanide ISA-51. In 18/18 evaluable patients, vaccination induced antigen-specific CD8(+) and CD4(+) T-cell and antibody responses, starting early after initiation of immunotherapy and lasting at least one year. The T-cells responded antigen-specifically, with strong secretion of IFNγ and TNFα, irrespective of patients' HLAs. The most immunogenic regions of the vaccine peptide were NY-ESO-189-102 for CD8(+) and NY-ESO-183-99 for CD4(+) T-cells. We discovered a novel and highly immunogenic epitope (HLA-DR7/NY-ESO-187-99); 7/7 HLA-DR7(+) patients generated strong CD4(+) T-cell responses, as detected directly ex vivo with fluorescent multimers. Thus, vaccination with the long synthetic NY-ESO-179-108 peptide combined with the strong immune adjuvant CpG-B induced integrated, robust and functional CD8(+) and CD4(+) T-cell responses in melanoma patients, supporting the further development of this immunotherapeutic approach

    Bianchi type V viscous fluid cosmological model for barotropic fluid distribution with varying cosmological term Λ\Lambda is investigated. We have examined a cosmological scenario proposing a variation law for Hubble parameter HH in the background of homogeneous, anisotropic Bianchi type V space-time. The model isotropizes asymptotically and the presence of shear viscosity accelerates the isotropization. The model describes a unified expansion history of the universe indicating initial decelerating expansion and late time accelerating phase.
