Fano-type interpretation of red shifts and red tails in hole array transmission spectra
We present a unifying point of view which allows to understand spectral
features reported in recent experiments with two-dimensional arrays of
subwavelength holes in metal films. We develop a Fano analysis of the related
scattering problem by distinguishing two interfering contributions to the
transmission process, namely a non-resonant contribution (direct scattering)
and a resonant contribution (surface plasmon excitation). The introduction of a
coupling strength between these two contributions naturally induces resonance
shifts and asymmetry of profiles which satisfy simple scaling relations. We
also report an experiment to confirm this analysis.Comment: 5 page

In this revised reply to quant-ph/0211165, I address the question of the
validity of my results in greater detail, by comparing my predictions to those
of the Silberfarb-Deutsch model, and I deal at greater length with the beam
area paradox. As before, I conclude that my previous results are an
(order-of-magnitude) accurate estimate of the error probability introduced in
quantum logical operations by the quantum nature of the laser field. While this
error will typically (for a paraxial beam) be smaller than the total error due
to spontaneous emission, a unified treatment of both effects reveals that they
lead to formally similar constraints on the minimum number of photons per pulse
required to perform an operation with a given accuracy; these constraints agree

Baryons in O(4) and Vibron Model
The structure of the reported excitation spectra of the light unflavored
baryons is described in terms of multi-spin valued Lorentz group
representations of the so called Rarita-Schwinger (RS) type (K/2, K/2)* [(1/
2,0)+ (0,1/2)] with K=1,3, and 5. We first motivate legitimacy of such pattern
as fundamental fields as they emerge in the decomposition of triple fermion
constructs into Lorentz representations. We then study the baryon realization
of RS fields as composite systems by means of the quark version of the U(4)
symmetric diatomic rovibron model. In using the U(4)/ O(4)/ O(3)/ O(2)
reduction chain, we are able to reproduce quantum numbers and mass splittings
of the above resonance assemblies. We present the essentials of the four
dimensional angular momentum algebra and construct electromagnetic tensor
operators. The predictive power of the model is illustrated by ratios of
reduced probabilities concerning electric de-excitations of various resonances

A comparative study of the effects of milling and abrasive water jet cutting on flexural performance of CFRP
Machining of carbon fibre reinforced polymers is part of the production process that introduces several challenges due to inherent characteristics of CFRPs such as non-homogeneity of their mechanical properties. A comparative analysis of conventional milling and abrasive water jet (AWJ) cutting is performed to quantify the effects of machining induced damage on flexural strength of woven CFRP laminates. The machined surfaces quality is characterized using optical and scanning electron microscopy methods prior to flexural mechanical testing. High-speed Digital Image Correlation technique is also used to measure deformation evolutions and determine fracture mechanisms in relation to the applied machining operation and produced machined surfaces. The effect of machining induced damage on strength of milled samples was less than expected with the AWJ processed samples having the least mechanical properties. The surface morphology analysis revealed that the entry and exit point of the water jet introduced severe surface and subsurface damage across the full thickness. The failure initiation sites were determined by strain distribution maps indicating that machining induced damage promotes failure of the tested CFRPs away from maximum compressive stress observed under the loading points
Confirmation of a pi_1^0 Exotic Meson in the \eta \pi^0 System
The exclusive reaction , at 18 GeV has been studied with a partial wave analysis on a sample
of 23~492 events from BNL experiment E852. A mass-dependent fit
is consistent with a resonant hypothesis for the wave, thus providing
evidence for a neutral exotic meson with , a mass of MeV, and a width of MeV. New
interpretations of the meson exotics in neutral system observed in
E852 and Crystal Barrel experiments are discussed.Comment: p3, rewording the paragraph (at the bottom) about the phase

A neutron scattering study of two-magnon states in the quantum magnet copper nitrate
We report measurements of the two-magnon states in a dimerized
antiferromagnetic chain material, copper nitrate (Cu(NO3)2*2.5D2O). Using
inelastic neutron scattering we have measured the one and two magnon excitation
spectra in a large single crystal. The data are in excellent agreement with a
perturbative expansion of the alternating Heisenberg Hamiltonian from the
strongly dimerized limit. The expansion predicts a two-magnon bound state for q
~ (2n+1)pi*d which is consistent with the neutron scattering data.Comment: 11 pages of revtex style with 6 figures include
Relativistic Coulomb Sum Rules for
A Coulomb sum rule is derived for the response of nuclei to
scattering with large three-momentum transfers. Unlike the nonrelativistic
formulation, the relativistic Coulomb sum is restricted to spacelike
four-momenta for the most direct connection with experiments; an immediate
consequence is that excitations involving antinucleons, e.g., pair
production, are approximately eliminated from the sum rule. Relativistic recoil
and Fermi motion of target nucleons are correctly incorporated. The sum rule
decomposes into one- and two-body parts, with correlation information in the
second. The one-body part requires information on the nucleon momentum
distribution function, which is incorporated by a moment expansion method. The
sum rule given through the second moment (RCSR-II) is tested in the Fermi gas

Dark mammoth trunks in the merging galaxy NGC 1316 and a mechanism of cosmic double helices
NGC 1316 is a giant, elliptical galaxy containing a complex network of dark,
dust features. The morphology of these features has been examined in some
detail using a Hubble Space Telescope, Advanced Camera for Surveys image. It is
found that most of the features are constituted of long filaments. There also
exist a great number of dark structures protruding inwards from the filaments.
Many of these structures are strikingly similar to elephant trunks in H II
regions in the Milky Way Galaxy, although much larger. The structures, termed
mammoth trunks, generally are filamentary and often have shapes resembling the
letters V or Y. In some of the mammoth trunks the stem of the Y can be resolved
into two or more filaments, many of which showing signs of being intertwined. A
model of the mammoth trunks, related to a recent theory of elephant trunks, is
proposed. Based on magnetized filaments, the model is capable of giving an
account of the various shapes of the mammoth trunks observed, including the

Exotic Meson Production in the System observed in the Reaction at 18 GeV/c
This letter reports results from the partial wave analysis of the
final state in collisions at 18GeV/c.
Strong evidence is observed for production of two mesons with exotic quantum
numbers of spin, parity and charge conjugation, in the decay
channel . The mass MeV/c^2 and
width MeV/c^2 of the first state are consistent
with the parameters of the previously observed . The second
resonance with mass MeV/c^2 and width MeV/c^2 agrees very well with predictions from theoretical
models. In addition, the presence of is confirmed with mass MeV/c^2 and width MeV/c^2
and a new state, , is observed with mass
MeV/c^2 and width MeV/c^2. The decay properties of
these last two states are consistent with flux tube model predictions for
hybrid mesons with non-exotic quantum numbers
