Towards Realistic String Vacua From Branes At Singularities
We report on progress towards constructing string models incorporating both
realistic D-brane matter content and moduli stabilisation with dynamical
low-scale supersymmetry breaking. The general framework is that of local
D-brane models embedded into the LARGE volume approach to moduli stabilisation.
We review quiver theories on del Pezzo () singularities including
both D3 and D7 branes. We provide supersymmetric examples with three
quark/lepton families and the gauge symmetries of the Standard, Left-Right
Symmetric, Pati-Salam and Trinification models, without unwanted chiral
exotics. We describe how the singularity structure leads to family symmetries
governing the Yukawa couplings which may give mass hierarchies among the
different generations. We outline how these models can be embedded into compact
Calabi-Yau compactifications with LARGE volume moduli stabilisation, and state
the minimal conditions for this to be possible. We study the general structure
of soft supersymmetry breaking. At the singularity all leading order
contributions to the soft terms (both gravity- and anomaly-mediation) vanish.
We enumerate subleading contributions and estimate their magnitude. We also
describe model-independent physical implications of this scenario. These
include the masses of anomalous and non-anomalous U(1)'s and the generic
existence of a new hyperweak force under which leptons and/or quarks could be
charged. We propose that such a gauge boson could be responsible for the ghost
muon anomaly recently found at the Tevatron's CDF detector.Comment: 40 pages, 10 figure
F-theory, GUTs, and the Weak Scale
In this paper we study a deformation of gauge mediated supersymmetry breaking
in a class of local F-theory GUT models where the scale of supersymmetry
breaking determines the value of the mu term. Geometrically correlating these
two scales constrains the soft SUSY breaking parameters of the MSSM. In this
scenario, the hidden SUSY breaking sector involves an anomalous U(1)
Peccei-Quinn symmetry which forbids bare mu and B mu terms. This sector
typically breaks supersymmetry at the desired range of energy scales through a
simple stringy hybrid of a Fayet and Polonyi model. A variant of the
Giudice-Masiero mechanism generates the value mu ~ 10^2 - 10^3 GeV when the
hidden sector scale of supersymmetry breaking is F^(1/2) ~ 10^(8.5) GeV.
Further, the B mu problem is solved due to the mild hierarchy between the GUT
scale and Planck scale. These models relate SUSY breaking with the QCD axion,
and solve the strong CP problem through an axion with decay constant f_a ~
M_(GUT) * mu / L, where L ~ 10^5 GeV is the characteristic scale of gaugino
mass unification in gauge mediated models, and the ratio \mu / L ~
M_(GUT)/M_(pl) ~ 10^(-3). We find f_a ~ 10^12 GeV, which is near the high end
of the phenomenologically viable window. Here, the axino is the goldstino mode
which is eaten by the gravitino. The gravitino is the LSP with a mass of about
10^1 - 10^2 MeV, and a bino-like neutralino is (typically) the NLSP with mass
of about 10^2 - 10^3 GeV. Compatibility with electroweak symmetry breaking also
determines the value of tan(beta) ~ 30 +/- 7.Comment: v3: 94 pages, 9 figures, clarification of Fayet-Polonyi model and

Lipid nanocapsules decorated and loaded with cannabidiol as targeted prolonged release carriers for glioma therapy: in vitro screening of critical parameters
The therapeutic potential of cannabinoids has been truly constrained heretofore due to their strong psychoactive effects and their high lipophilicity. In this context, precisely due to the lack of psychoactive properties, cannabidiol (CBD), the second major component of Cannabis sativa, arises as the phytocannabinoid with the most auspicious therapeutic potential. Hence, the incorporation of CBD in lipid nanocapsules (LNCs) will contribute to overcome the dosing problems associated with cannabinoids. Herein, we have prepared LNCs decorated and loaded with CBD for glioma therapy and screened in vitro their critical parameters. On the one hand, we have encapsulated CBD into the oily core of LNCs to test their in vitro efficacy as extended-release carriers against the human glioblastoma cell line U373MG. The in vitro antitumor effect was highly dependent on the size of LNCs due to its pivotal role in the extent of CBD release. Effectively, a comparison between two differently-sized LNCs (namely, 20-nm and 50-nm sized carriers) showed that the smaller LNCs reduced by 3.0-fold the IC value of their 50-nm sized counterparts. On the other hand, to explore the potential of this phytocannabinoid to target any of the cannabinoid receptors overexpressed in glioma cells, we decorated the LNCs with CBD. This functionalization strategy enhanced the in vitro glioma targeting by 3.4-fold in comparison with their equally-sized undecorated counterparts. Lastly, the combination of CBD-loading with CBD-functionalization further reduced the IC values. Hence, the potential of these two strategies of CBD incorporation into LNCs deserves subsequent in vivo evaluation
SUSY Breaking in Local String/F-Theory Models
We investigate bulk moduli stabilisation and supersymmetry breaking in local
string/F-theory models where the Standard Model is supported on a del Pezzo
surface or singularity. Computing the gravity mediated soft terms on the
Standard Model brane induced by bulk supersymmetry breaking in the LARGE volume
scenario, we explicitly find suppressions by M_s/M_P ~ V^{-1/2} compared to
M_{3/2}. This gives rise to several phenomenological scenarios, depending on
the strength of perturbative corrections to the effective action and the source
of de Sitter lifting, in which the soft terms are suppressed by at least
M_P/V^{3/2} and may be as small as M_P/V^2. Since the gravitino mass is of
order M_{3/2} ~ M_P/V, for TeV soft terms all these scenarios give a very heavy
gravitino (M_{3/2} >= 10^8 GeV) and generically the lightest moduli field is
also heavy enough (m >= 10 TeV) to avoid the cosmological moduli problem. For
TeV soft terms, these scenarios predict a minimal value of the volume to be V ~
10^{6-7} in string units, which would give a unification scale of order M_{GUT}
~ M_s V^{1/6} ~ 10^{16} GeV. The strong suppression of gravity mediated soft
terms could also possibly allow a scenario of dominant gauge mediation in the
visible sector but with a very heavy gravitino M_{3/2} > 1 TeV
Subthreshold dynamics of the neural membrane potential driven by stochastic synaptic input
In the cerebral cortex, neurons are subject to a continuous bombardment of synaptic inputs originating from the network's background activity. This leads to ongoing, mostly subthreshold membrane dynamics that depends on the statistics of the background activity and of the synapses made on a neuron. Subthreshold membrane polarization is, in turn, a potent modulator of neural responses. The present paper analyzes the subthreshold dynamics of the neural membrane potential driven by synaptic inputs of stationary statistics. Synaptic inputs are considered in linear interaction. The analysis identifies regimes of input statistics which give rise to stationary, fluctuating, oscillatory, and unstable dynamics. In particular, I show that (i) mere noise inputs can drive the membrane potential into sustained, quasiperiodic oscillations (noise-driven oscillations), in the absence of a stimulus-derived, intraneural, or network pacemaker; (ii) adding hyperpolarizing to depolarizing synaptic input can increase neural activity (hyperpolarization-induced activity), in the absence of hyperpolarization-activated currents
Matter wave functions and Yukawa couplings in F-theory Grand Unification
We study the local structure of zero mode wave functions of chiral matter
fields in F-theory unification. We solve the differential equations for the
zero modes derived from local Higgsing in the 8-dimensional parent action of
F-theory 7-branes. The solutions are found as expansions both in powers and
derivatives of the magnetic fluxes. Yukawa couplings are given by an overlap
integral of the three wave functions involved in the interaction and can be
calculated analytically. We provide explicit expressions for these Yukawas to
second order both in the flux and derivative expansions and discuss the effect
of higher order terms. We explicitly describe the dependence of the couplings
on the U(1) charges of the relevant fields, appropriately taking into account
their normalization. A hierarchical Yukawa structure is naturally obtained. The
application of our results to the understanding of the observed hierarchies of
quarks and leptons is discussed.Comment: Latex, 51 pages, 4 figures, typos corrected, note adde
Enhanced stability of perovskite solar cells incorporating dopant-free Crystalline spiro-OMeTAD layers by vacuum sublimation
The main handicap still hindering the eventual exploitation of organometal halide perovskite-based solar cells is their poor stability under prolonged illumination, ambient conditions, and increased temperatures. This article shows for the first time the vacuum processing of the most widely used solid-state hole conductor (SSHC), i.e., the Spiro-OMeTAD [2,2′,7,7′-tetrakis (N,N-di-p-methoxyphenyl-amine) 9,9′-spirobifluorene], and how its dopant-free crystalline formation unprecedently improves perovskite solar cell (PSC) stability under continuous illumination by about two orders of magnitude with respect to the solution-processed reference and after annealing in air up to 200 °C. It is demonstrated that the control over the temperature of the samples during the vacuum deposition enhances the crystallinity of the SSHC, obtaining a preferential orientation along the π–π stacking direction. These results may represent a milestone toward the full vacuum processing of hybrid organic halide PSCs as well as light-emitting diodes, with promising impacts on the development of durable devices. The microstructure, purity, and crystallinity of the vacuum sublimated Spiro-OMeTAD layers are fully elucidated by applying an unparalleled set of complementary characterization techniques, including scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, grazing-incidence small-angle X-ray scattering and grazing-incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy. The authors thank the “Agencia Estatal de Investigación”, “Consejería de Economía y Conocimiento de la Junta de Andalucía” (US‐1263142), “Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad” (MAT2016‐79866‐R, MAT2013‐42900‐P, FPA2016‐77689‐C2‐1‐R, and MAT2016‐76892‐C3‐2‐R) and the European Union (EU) through cohesion fund and FEDER 2014‐2020 programs for financial support. Use of filter papers to determine seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii among hunted ungulates in remote Peruvian Amazon
Toxoplasmosis is a zoonosis caused by the protozoan Toxoplasma gondii, and it is found worldwide. To determine whether ungulates are reservoirs of T. gondii in an isolated and remote region of the northeastern Peruvian Amazon, antibodies to T. gondii were determined in 5 species of ungulates by the modified agglutination test (MAT). These animals were hunted by subsistence hunters along the Yavarí-Mirín River, in the northeastern Peruvian Amazon. Blood samples were collected by hunters on filter papers. For determination of T. gondii antibodies, blood was eluted from filter papers, and a titer of 1:25 was considered indicative of exposure to T. gondii. Antibodies to T. gondii were found in 26 (31.0%) peccaries (Pecari tajacu, Tayassu pecari), six (17.1%) brocket deer (Mazama americana, Mazama gouazoubira), and four (40.0%) lowland tapir (Tapirus terrestris). We also introduced a modification to the MAT protocol that allows the extraction of fluid samples from several types of laboratory-grade filter paper, thus enabling researchers to easily adapt their approaches to the materials presented to them
Evaluation of Natural Language Processing for the Identification of Crohn Disease-Related Variables in Spanish Electronic Health Records:A Validation Study for the PREMONITION-CD Project
Background: The exploration of clinically relevant information in the free text of electronic health records (EHRs) holds the potential to positively impact clinical practice as well as knowledge regarding Crohn disease (CD), an inflammatory bowel disease that may affect any segment of the gastrointestinal tract. The EHRead technology, a clinical natural language processing (cNLP) system, was designed to detect and extract clinical information from narratives in the clinical notes contained in EHRs. Objective: The aim of this study is to validate the performance of the EHRead technology in identifying information of patients with CD. Methods: We used the EHRead technology to explore and extract CD-related clinical information from EHRs. To validate this tool, we compared the output of the EHRead technology with a manually curated gold standard to assess the quality of our cNLP system in detecting records containing any reference to CD and its related variables. Results: The validation metrics for the main variable (CD) were a precision of 0.88, a recall of 0.98, and an F1 score of 0.93. Regarding the secondary variables, we obtained a precision of 0.91, a recall of 0.71, and an F1 score of 0.80 for CD flare, while for the variable vedolizumab (treatment), a precision, recall, and F1 score of 0.86, 0.94, and 0.90 were obtained, respectively. Conclusions: This evaluation demonstrates the ability of the EHRead technology to identify patients with CD and their related variables from the free text of EHRs. To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first to use a cNLP system for the identification of CD in EHRs written in Spanish. © 2022 JMIR Medical Informatics. All rights reserved
