Holistic management approach as a tool for dehesa/montado restoration

    Get PDF
PosterDehesa/montado can be defined as a multi-purpose agroforestry system with scattered oak trees. This ecosystem covers an estimated 3.1 million ha and is the most extended silvopastoral system and the largest High Nature Value Farming System in Europe. However, the sustainability of dehesas/montados has been questioned in recent years because of trends towards more intensive and simplified management, which in turn have led to changes in vegetation and soil properties and increased soil erosion rates. Holistic Management approach, based on time-controlled grazing systems, not only increases productivity but also implies ecosystem improvements: soil properties (soil structure, amount of organic matter, water efficiency, and availability soil nutrients) and pasture species cover and composition. McCoster (2000) has described a synergistic effect between a cell grazing (similar to HM) and trees regeneration in Australia. The main goal of this study is to evaluate the effect of the Holistic Management Grazing Approach on the soil properties, trees recovery, pasture cover, biodiversity and productivity opposite to nowadays continuous grazing management and different pasture innovations in Spanish and Portuguese dehesa/montado farms

The influence of pre-fermentative maceration and ageing factors on ester profile and marker determination of Pedro Ximenez sparkling wines

The influence of pre-fermentative maceration and ageing factors on the ester profiles of Pedro Ximenez sparkling wines was evaluated. The pre-fermentative maceration consisted of the skin-maceration of musts at 10 degrees C for 6 h. The sparkling wines were produced following the Champenoise method. Samples were monitored at 3, 6 and 9 months of ageing on lees. Sparkling wines with pre fermentative maceration displayed higher contents of ethyl esters of branched acids and cinnamates. Meanwhile, those without maceration showed higher levels of ethyl esters of fatty acids and higher alcohol acetates. The study of statistical interactions elucidated different hydrolytic kinetics and developments in higher alcohol acetates and ethyl esters of branched acids during ageing. The application of a dual criterion based on univariate (ANOVA) and multivariate analyses (OPLS-DA) allowed us to identify new potential volatile markers related to pre-fermentative maceration and ageing time, reported for the first time in sparkling wines

First attempts of linking modelling, Postharvest behaviour and Melon Genetics

The onset of climacteric is associated with the end of melon fruit shelf-life. The aim of this research was to develop practical and applicable models of fruit ripening changes (hardness, moisture loss) also able to discriminate between climacteric and non-climacteric behaviour. The decrease in firmness was measured non-destructively by flat-plate compression; moisture loss was measured by weight loss. A set of 13-15 near-isogenic lines (NILs) derived from the climacteric line SC3-5 was used to verify the relationship among the climacteric behaviour and ripening related changes (weight loss, softening and color) during two consecutive seasons. The biological variance models for moisture loss and firmness followed a simple exponential behaviour that explained more than 90% of the total variance. Results of the analyses using these models could not be linked to properties of near-isogenic lines like climacteric behaviour, ethylene production or skin thickness. The results suggest that the phenotype is more important than genotype, when considering mean values. These results seem to suggest that relations may exist between the different processes and properties of NILs on an individual basis, not on mean values

Analysis of M2M Capabilities in 4G

M2M (Machine to Machine) communications enable many new applications that reduce the costs of maintenance and operation via remote monitoring and control. The forecasts for this type of communications predict traffic increases associated with these devices of about 100% in the coming years. However, the behaviour of M2M devices is different from the human user, which causes stress on the networks due to the overload of the signalling procedures. This paper reviews the literature on the current scenario, projections for the decade, and improvements that LTE (Long Term Evolution) will offer for this segment of devices.Universidad de Málaga. Intercalary membrane as the inner wall overlying optic and chorio-retinal colobomas. Deep penetration Swept Source-OCT study.

Five eyes of four patients were studied to analyze the structure of the inner wall of optic and chorioretinal colobomas using swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT). The colobomatous cavities and their relationship with adjacent structures were examined. SS-OCT permitted the study of the colobomatous cavities in all cases. In four of those cases, a Y-shaped intercalary membrane (ICM) was identified, with an origin in the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL), which covered the coloboma and in one case the coloboma was in contact with the vitreous cavity. Vitreous adhesion to the internal wall of the coloboma was found in three cases. No clinical or tomographic maculopathy was observed in any patient. High-resolution deep penetration SS-OCT allows in vivo study of optic and chorioretinal colobomas, identifying the RNFL as the main component of the ICM overlying the colobomatous cavities

Unusual theropod eggshells from the early cretaceous blesa formation of the Iberian Range, Spain

Trigonoolithus amoae oogen. et oosp. nov. is described on the basis of abundant eggshell fragments from the La Cantalera 1 site in the Early Cretaceous (early Barremian) Blesa Formation, Teruel Province, northern Spain. The surface ornamentation, the most diagnostic feature of the new oogenus, consists of closely spaced sub-triangular or rounded protuberances that have not previously been reported in any other ootaxon. The eggshells present three distinct layers, with a gradual transition between prismatic and mammillary layers, and a poorly developed external layer with progressive prismatic to external layer transition, a combination of characters that allows them to be assigned to Prismatoolithidae. Phylogenetic analyses based on oological characters place Trigonoolithus at the base of Prismatoolithidae

Halving for the 2-Sylow subgroup of genus 2 curves over binary fields

AbstractWe give a deterministic polynomial time algorithm to find the structure of the 2-Sylow subgroup of the Jacobian of a genus 2 curve over a finite field of characteristic 2. Our procedure starts with the points of order 2 and then performs a chain of successive halvings while such an operation makes sense. The stopping condition is triggered when certain polynomials fail to have roots in the base field, as previously shown by I. Kitamura, M. Katagi and T. Takagi. The structure of our algorithm is similar to the already known case of genus 1 and odd characteristic

High-pressure Raman study of L-alanine crystal

Pressure-dependent Raman scattering studies in the range 0.0 -- 32 kbar were carried out in L-alanine in order to investigate its external mode phonon spectra in relation to the phase transitions in the crystal. A careful analysis of the spectra shows that the low-energy Raman modes exhibit variation both in frequency and in intensity and between 26 and 28 kbar it is observed a splitting of a external mode, indicating that the D_2 normal phase undergoes a transition. Pressure coefficients for external modes are also given.Comment: 11 pages, Latex, 2 figure
