    Published ArticleIntelligent Neural Network (NN) based control schemes have surmounted many of the limitations found in the conventional control approaches such as Proportional Integral Derivative (PID) control. Nevertheless, these modern control techniques have only recently been introduced for use on industrial computational platforms such as the Programmable Logic Controller (PLC). Intelligent control on PLCs thus remains an area that is open to further research and development. In this paper, a strongly non-linear mechatronic type system, namely the Ball-on-Wheel balancing system, is developed using a PLC as its control platform. The research details the implementation of an intelligent controller on a standard, medium specification PLC. The results from the intelligent controller are then compared to those produced by a variety of conventional controllers as physical parameters are varied. Finally, the system is presented as a stimulating educational tool that addresses the knowledge gap that exists in industry pertaining to the implementation of these intelligent control algorithms on PLCs

    The epidemic of type 2 diabetes (T2D) continues to soar worldwide. Driven by changes in human habits, from availability of energy dense processed foods to the decrease of physical activity, T2D constitutes already a heavy burden of disease and a worrisome barrier for the sustainability of National Health Systems. Indeed, it affects 415 million people (8.8% prevalence), was responsible for 5.0 million deaths in 2015, and is estimated to cost 1/9 of all Health expenses. Within Europe, Portugal is reported as having the highest prevalence of diabetes: an estimated 9.6% by World Standard Population. But if we take into consideration the age distribution of the Portuguese population, then estimates increase to 12.9%. This means that 1 million Portuguese have diabetes, with almost half of these still undiagnosed. Additionally, 2 million (a third of the adult population) are estimated to have intermediate hyperglycemia (or prediabetes), being largely unaware of this condition.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Selection of native trees for intercropping with coffee in the Atlantic Rainforest biome

    A challenge in establishing agroforestry systems is ensuring that farmers are interested in the tree species, and are aware of how to adequately manage these species. This challenge was tackled in the Atlantic Rainforest biome (Brazil), where a participatory trial with agroforestry coffee systems was carried out, followed by a participatory systematisation of the farmers experiences. Our objective was to identify the main tree species used by farmers as well as their criteria for selecting or rejecting tree species. Furthermore, we aimed to present a specific inventory of trees of the Leguminosae family. In order to collect the data, we reviewed the bibliography of the participatory trial, visited and interviewed the farmers and organised workshops with them. The main farmers' criteria for selecting tree species were compatibility with coffee, amount of biomass, production and the labour needed for tree management. The farmers listed 85 tree species; we recorded 28 tree species of the Leguminosae family. Most trees were either native to the biome or exotic fruit trees. In order to design and manage complex agroforestry systems, family farmers need sufficient knowledge and autonomy, which can be reinforced when a participatory methodology is used for developing on-farm agroforestry systems. In the case presented, the farmers learned how to manage, reclaim and conserve their land. The diversification of production, especially with fruit, contributes to food security and to a low cost/benefit ratio of agroforestry systems. The investigated agroforestry systems showed potential to restore the degraded landscape of the Atlantic Rainforest biome

    Decorrem actualmente na Universidade de Évora diversos projectos de investigação visando o desenvolvimento de metodologias de caracterização e avaliação ecológica com vista ao planeamento e gestão do território. Tais projectos, desenvolvidos a escalas complementares (1:10 000; 1:25 000 e 1:100 000), pretendem via a constituir um quadro metodológico inovador integrando num único plano de caracterização e avaliação, o plano dos sistemas de uso e o plano dos sistemas ecológicos espaciais. A necessidade de um tal sistema integrado justifica-se pela carência de um referencial de caracterização e avaliação do território com vista à articulação od sprocesos de gestão e à promoção dos objectivos de Conservação da Natureza. Com efeito, a necessidade de assegurar a preservação da biodiversidade da globalidade do território impõe uma abordagem à gestaõ do uso deste que assegure que o nível de fragmentação, de conectividade residual, e de complementaridade funcional asseguram as condições para a sustentação viável de meta-populações das espécie-objectivo. Para atingir tal objectivo importa conhecer e conseguir articular nos processos de simulação e gestão, as necessidades, processos e funções dos diferentes usos antrópicos de uma dada região e as necessidades processos, funções e condicionantes espaciais dos diferentes sistemas ecológicos susceptiveis de ocorrerem nessa região ou locais.     In silico mechano-chemical model of bone healing for the regeneration of critical defects: The effect of BMP-2

    The healing of bone defects is a challenge for both tissue engineering and modern ortho- paedics. This problem has been addressed through the study of scaffold constructs com- bined with mechanoregulatory theories, disregarding the influence of chemical factors and their respective delivery devices. Of the chemical factors involved in the bone healing pro- cess, bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2) has been identified as one of the most power- ful osteoinductive proteins. The aim of this work is to develop and validate a mechano- chemical regulatory model to study the effect of BMP-2 on the healing of large bone defects in silico. We first collected a range of quantitative experimental data from the literature con- cerning the effects of BMP-2 on cellular activity, specifically proliferation, migration, differen- tiation, maturation and extracellular matrix production. These data were then used to define a model governed by mechano-chemical stimuli to simulate the healing of large bone de- fects under the following conditions: natural healing, an empty hydrogel implanted in the de- fect and a hydrogel soaked with BMP-2 implanted in the defect. For the latter condition, successful defect healing was predicted, in agreement with previous in vivo experiments. Further in vivo comparisons showed the potential of the model, which accurately predicted bone tissue formation during healing, bone tissue distribution across the defect and the quantity of bone inside the defect. The proposed mechano-chemical model also estimated the effect of BMP-2 on cells and the evolution of healing in large bone defects. This novel in silico tool provides valuable insight for bone tissue regeneration strategies

    Factors affecting SMEs' strategic decisions to approach international markets

    [EN] The internationalisation challenges that face all companies are no longer the exclusive concern of multinationals. Participation in the international marketplace has become a reality for large firms and small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) alike. This kind of participation can be rewarding for both companies and employees. The markets that SMEs enter and the success of this entry depend on several factors such as cultural differences, company tradition, venture capital, products and competitors. The goal of this study is therefore to understand whether the characteristics of the external market, the characteristics of the company itself and the barriers to internationalisation influence the strategic approach that SMEs adopt in their internationalisation processes. Using data on 320 Portuguese SMEs, we apply multivariate analyses to test the dimensions of internationalisation. We find that the decision of SMEs to internationalise involves an institutional change in response to external pressures in the home country. SMEs under greater institutional pressure not only tend to expand further but also engage in their initial international activities more radically.This work is supported by FEDER funds from COMPETE 2020 and Portuguese funds - PORTUGAL 2020.
