Pencil-Beam Surveys for Trans-Neptunian Objects: Limits on Distant Populations
Two populations of minor bodies in the outer Solar System remain particularly
elusive: Scattered Disk objects and Sedna-like objects. These populations are
important dynamical tracers, and understanding the details of their spatial-
and size-distributions will enhance our understanding of the formation and
on-going evolution of the Solar System. By using newly-derived limits on the
maximum heliocentric distances that recent pencil-beam surveys for
Trans-Neptunian Objects were sensitive to, we determine new upper limits on the
total numbers of distant SDOs and Sedna-like objects. While generally
consistent with populations estimated from wide-area surveys, we show that for
magnitude-distribution slopes of {\alpha} > 0.7-1.0, these pencil-beam surveys
provide stronger upper limits than current estimates in literature.Comment: Submitted to Icaru
A Derivation of the Luminosity Function of the Kuiper Belt from a Broken Power-Law Size Distribution
We have derived a model of the Kuiper belt luminosity function exhibited by a
broken power-law size distribution. This model allows direct comparison of the
observed luminosity function to the underlying size distribution. We discuss
the importance of the radial distribution model in determining the break
diameter. We determine a best-fit break-diameter of the Kuiper belt
size-distribution of 30<Db<90 km via a maximum-likelihood fit of our model to
the observed luminosity function. We also confirm that the observed luminosity
function for m(R) ~ 21-28 is consistent with a broken power-law size
distribution, and exhibits a break at m(R)=26.0+0.7-1.8.Comment: Accepted by Icarus 25 pages, 2 tables, 2 figure
Diffuse light and galaxy interactions in the core of nearby clusters
The kinematics of the diffuse light in the densest regions of the nearby
clusters can be unmasked using the planetary nebulae (PNs) as probes of the
stellar motions. The position-velocity diagrams around the brightest cluster
galaxies (BCGs) identify the relative contributions from the outer halos and
the intracluster light (ICL), defined as the light radiated by the stars
floating in the cluster potential. The kinematics of the ICL can then be used
to asses the dynamical status of the nearby cluster cores and to infer their
formation histories. The cores of the Virgo and Coma are observed to be far
from equilibrium, with mergers currently on-going, while the ICL properties in
the Fornax and Hydra clusters show the presence of sub-components being
accreted in their cores, but superposed to an otherwise relaxed population of
stars. Finally the comparison of the observed ICL properties with those
predicted from Lambda-CDM simulations indicates a qualitative agreement and
provides insights on the ICL formation. Both observations and simulations
indicate that BCG halos and ICL are physically distinct components, with the
``hotter" ICL dominating at large radial distances from the BCGs halos as the

Non-stationary Rayleigh-Taylor instability in supernovae ejecta
The Rayleigh-Taylor instability plays an important role in the dynamics of
several astronomical objects, in particular, in supernovae (SN) evolution. In
this paper we develop an analytical approach to study the stability analysis of
spherical expansion of the SN ejecta by using a special transformation in the
co-moving coordinate frame. We first study a non-stationary spherical expansion
of a gas shell under the pressure of a central source. Then we analyze its
stability with respect to a no radial, non spherically symmetric perturbation
of the of the shell. We consider the case where the polytropic constant of the
SN shell is and we examine the evolution of a arbitrary shell
perturbation. The dispersion relation is derived. The growth rate of the
perturbation is found and its temporal and spatial evolution is discussed. The
stability domain depends on the ejecta shell thickness, its acceleration, and
the perturbation wavelength.Comment: 16 page
Creation of maximally entangled photon-number states using optical fiber multiports
We theoretically demonstrate a method for producing the maximally
path-entangled state (1/Sqrt[2]) (|N,0> + exp[iN phi] |0,N>) using
intensity-symmetric multiport beamsplitters, single photon inputs, and either
photon-counting postselection or conditional measurement. The use of
postselection enables successful implementation with non-unit efficiency
detectors. We also demonstrate how to make the same state more conveniently by

The road to deterministic matrices with the restricted isometry property
The restricted isometry property (RIP) is a well-known matrix condition that
provides state-of-the-art reconstruction guarantees for compressed sensing.
While random matrices are known to satisfy this property with high probability,
deterministic constructions have found less success. In this paper, we consider
various techniques for demonstrating RIP deterministically, some popular and
some novel, and we evaluate their performance. In evaluating some techniques,
we apply random matrix theory and inadvertently find a simple alternative proof
that certain random matrices are RIP. Later, we propose a particular class of
matrices as candidates for being RIP, namely, equiangular tight frames (ETFs).
Using the known correspondence between real ETFs and strongly regular graphs,
we investigate certain combinatorial implications of a real ETF being RIP.
Specifically, we give probabilistic intuition for a new bound on the clique
number of Paley graphs of prime order, and we conjecture that the corresponding
ETFs are RIP in a manner similar to random matrices.Comment: 24 page
Determination of the Strange Quark Content of the Nucleon from a Next-to-Leading-Order QCD Analysis of Neutrino Charm Production
We present the first next-to-leading-order QCD analysis of neutrino charm
production, using a sample of 6090 - and -induced
opposite-sign dimuon events observed in the CCFR detector at the Fermilab
Tevatron. We find that the nucleon strange quark content is suppressed with
respect to the non-strange sea quarks by a factor \kappa = 0.477 \:
^{+\:0.063}_{-\:0.053}, where the error includes statistical, systematic and
QCD scale uncertainties. In contrast to previous leading order analyses, we
find that the strange sea -dependence is similar to that of the non-strange
sea, and that the measured charm quark mass, , is larger and consistent with that determined in other processes.
Further analysis finds that the difference in -distributions between
and is small. A measurement of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa
matrix element is also presented.

'To live and die [for] Dixie': Irish civilians and the Confederate States of America
Around 20,000 Irishmen served in the Confederate army in the Civil War. As a result, they left behind, in various Southern towns and cities, large numbers of friends, family, and community leaders. As with native-born Confederates, Irish civilian support was crucial to Irish participation in the Confederate military effort. Also, Irish civilians served in various supporting roles: in factories and hospitals, on railroads and diplomatic missions, and as boosters for the cause. They also, however, suffered in bombardments, sieges, and the blockade. Usually poorer than their native neighbours, they could not afford to become 'refugees' and move away from the centres of conflict. This essay, based on research from manuscript collections, contemporary newspapers, British Consular records, and Federal military records, will examine the role of Irish civilians in the Confederacy, and assess the role this activity had on their integration into Southern communities. It will also look at Irish civilians in the defeat of the Confederacy, particularly when they came under Union occupation. Initial research shows that Irish civilians were not as upset as other whites in the South about Union victory. They welcomed a return to normalcy, and often 'collaborated' with Union authorities. Also, Irish desertion rates in the Confederate army were particularly high, and I will attempt to gauge whether Irish civilians played a role in this. All of the research in this paper will thus be put in the context of the Drew Gilpin Faust/Gary Gallagher debate on the influence of the Confederate homefront on military performance. By studying the Irish civilian experience one can assess how strong the Confederate national experiment was. Was it a nation without a nationalism
Metal enrichment processes
There are many processes that can transport gas from the galaxies to their
environment and enrich the environment in this way with metals. These metal
enrichment processes have a large influence on the evolution of both the
galaxies and their environment. Various processes can contribute to the gas
transfer: ram-pressure stripping, galactic winds, AGN outflows, galaxy-galaxy
interactions and others. We review their observational evidence, corresponding
simulations, their efficiencies, and their time scales as far as they are known
to date. It seems that all processes can contribute to the enrichment. There is
not a single process that always dominates the enrichment, because the
efficiencies of the processes vary strongly with galaxy and environmental
