Welfare Effects of Tariff Reduction Formulas
WTO negotiations rely on tariff reduction formulas. It has been argued that formula approaches are of increasing importance in trade talks, because of the large number of countries involved, the wider dispersion in initial tariffs (e.g. tariff peaks) and gaps between bound and applied tariff rates. This paper resents a two country intra-industry trade model with heterogeneous firms subject to high and low tariffs. We examine the welfare effects of applying three different tariff reduction formulas proposed in the literature i) a proportional cut, ii) the Swiss formula and iii) a compression formula. No single formula dominates for all conditions. The ranking of the three tools depends on the degree of product differentiation in the industry, and the achieved reduction in the average tariff.Welfare, monopolistic competition, intra-industry trade, wto trade liberalization, formula approaches
Characterization of constricted fruit (ctf) Mutant Uncovers a Role for AtMYB117/LOF1 in Ovule and Fruit Development in Arabidopsis thaliana
Pistil and fruit morphogenesis is the result of a complex gene network that is not yet fully understood. A search for novel genes is needed to make a more comprehensive model of pistil and fruit development. Screening for mutants with alterations in fruit morphology generated by an activation tagging strategy resulted in the isolation of the ctf (constricted fruit) mutant. It is characterized by a) small and wrinkled fruits, with an enlarged replum, an amorphous structure of the septum and an irregular distribution of ovules and seeds; b) ectopic carpelloid structures in sepals bearing ovule-like structures and c) dwarf plants with curled rosette leaves. The overexpressed gene in ctf was AtMYB117, also named LOF1 (LATERAL ORGAN FUSION1). AtMYB117/LOF1 transcripts were localized in boundary regions of the vegetative shoot apical meristem and leaf primordia and in a group of cells in the adaxial base of petioles and bracts. Transcripts were also detected in the boundaries between each of the four floral whorls and during pistil development in the inner of the medial ridges, the placenta, the base of the ovule primordia, the epidermis of the developing septum and the outer cell layers of the ovule funiculi. Analysis of changes of expression of pistil-related genes in the ctf mutant showed an enhancement of SHATTERPROOF1 (SHP1) and SHP2 expression. All these results suggest that AtMYB117/LOF1 is recruited by a variety of developmental programs for the establishment of boundary regions, including the development of floral organs and the initiation of ovule outgrowth
Prediction of Mechanical Properties of Polymers With Various Force Fields
The effect of force field type on the predicted elastic properties of a polyimide is examined using a multiscale modeling technique. Molecular Dynamics simulations are used to predict the atomic structure and elastic properties of the polymer by subjecting a representative volume element of the material to bulk and shear finite deformations. The elastic properties of the polyimide are determined using three force fields: AMBER, OPLS-AA, and MM3. The predicted values of Young s modulus and shear modulus of the polyimide are compared with experimental values. The results indicate that the mechanical properties of the polyimide predicted with the OPLS-AA force field most closely matched those from experiment. The results also indicate that while the complexity of the force field does not have a significant effect on the accuracy of predicted properties, small differences in the force constants and the functional form of individual terms in the force fields determine the accuracy of the force field in predicting the elastic properties of the polyimide
Mesoscopic phase separation in La2CuO4.02 - a 139La NQR study
In crystals of La2CuO4.02 oxygen diffusion can be limited to such small
length scales, that the resulting phase separation is invisible for neutrons.
Decomposition of the 139La NQR spectra shows the existence of three different
regions, of which one orders antiferromagnetically below 17K concomitantly with
the onset of a weak superconductivity in the crystal. These regions are
compared to the macroscopic phases seen previously in the title compound and
the cluster-glass and striped phases reported for the underdoped Sr-doped
cuprates.Comment: 4 pages, RevTeX, 5 figures, to be published in PR
Scanning the phases of QCD with BRAHMS
BRAHMS has the ability to study relativistic heavy ion collisions from the
final freeze-out of hadrons all the way back to the initial wave-function of
the gold nuclei. This is accomplished by studying hadrons with a very wide
range of momenta and angles. In doing so we can scan various phases of QCD,
from a hadron gas, to a quark gluon plasma and perhaps to a color glass
condensate.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, proceedings of plenary talk at Quark Matter 2004

High Pt Hadron Spectra at High Rapidity
We report the measurement of charged hadron production at different
pseudo-rapidity values in deuteron+gold as well as proton+proton collisions at
= 200GeV at RHIC. The nuclear modification factors and
are used to investigate new behaviors in the deuteron+gold system as
function of rapidity and the centrality of the collisions respectively.Comment: Nine pages 4 figures to be published in the QM2004 Proceedings, typos

Genome-wide meta-analysis identifies eight new susceptibility loci for cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma
Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is one of the most common cancers in the United States. Previous genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified 14 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with cutaneous SCC. Here, we report the largest cutaneous SCC meta-analysis to date, representing six international cohorts and totaling 19,149 SCC cases and 680,049 controls. We discover eight novel loci associated with SCC, confirm all previously associated loci, and perform fine mapping of causal variants. The novel SNPs occur within skin-specific regulatory elements and implicate loci involved in cancer development, immune regulation, and keratinocyte differentiation in SCC susceptibility

We present particle spectra for charged hadrons and from pp collisions at =200\bar{p}/p$ ratios associated with baryon transport
