Analysis of externally loaded bolted joints : analytical, computational and experimental study
The behaviour of a simple single-bolted-joint under tensile separating loads is analysed using conventional analytical methods, a finite element approach and experimental techniques. The variation in bolt force with external load predicted by the finite element analysis conforms well to the experimental results. It is demonstrated that certain detailed features such thread interaction do not need to be modelled to ensure useful results. Behaviour during the pre-loading phase of use agrees with previous long-standing studies. However, the pre-loading analysis does not carry over to the stage when external loading is applied, as is normally assumed and it is shown that the current, conventional analytical methods substantially over-predict the proportion of the external load carried by the bolt. The basic reason for this is shown to be related to the non-linear variation in contact conditions between the clamped members during the external loading stage
SARA – A Semantic Access Point Resource Allocation Service for Heterogenous Wireless Networks
In this paper, we present SARA, a Semantic Access point Resource Allocation service for heterogenous wireless networks with various wireless access technologies existing together. By automatically reasoning on the knowledge base of the full system provided by a knowledge based autonomic network management system - SEANET, SARA selects the access point providing the best quality of service among the different access technologies. Based on an ontology assisted knowledge based system SEANET, SARA can also adapt the access point selection strategy according to customer defined rules automatically. Results of our evaluation based on emulated networks with hybrid access technologies and various scales show that SARA is able to improve the channel condition, in terms of throughput, evidently. Comparisons with current AP selection algorithms demonstrate that SARA outperforms the existing AP selection algorithms. The overhead in terms of time expense is reasonable and is shown to be faster than traditional access point selection approaches
Draft whole-genome sequences of 10 Aeromonas strains from clinical and environmental sources
Aeromonas bacteria are able to cause disease in a wide range of animals from humans to fish. In this article, we report the draft whole-genome sequences of 10 Aeromonas strains from clinical and environmental sources. These genome sequences will provide a repository of information for further investigations into the pathogenicity of this enigmatic pathogen
QCD Sum Rule Determination of with Minimal Data Input
We present the results of a new evaluation of the running fine structure
constant at the scale of the mass in which the role of the
annihilation input data needed in this evaluation is minimized. This
is achieved by reducing the weight function in the
dispersion integral over the annihilation data by subtracting a
polynomial function from the weight function which mimics its energy dependence
in given energy intervals. In order to compensate for this subtraction the same
polynomial weight integral is added again but is now evaluated on a circular
contour in the complex plane using QCD and global duality. For the hadronic
contribution to the shift in the fine structure constant we obtain
. Adding in the
leptonic and top contributions our final result is .Comment: no changes, PostScript figures included in the text for convenienc
New single-ended objective measure for non-intrusive speech quality evaluation
peer-reviewedThis article proposes a new output-based method for non-intrusive assessment of speech quality of voice communication systems and evaluates its performance. The method requires access to the processed (degraded) speech only, and is based on measuring perception-motivated objective auditory distances between the voiced parts of the output speech to appropriately matching references extracted from a pre-formulated codebook. The codebook is formed by optimally clustering a large number of parametric speech vectors extracted from a database of clean speech records. The auditory distances are then mapped into objective Mean Opinion listening quality scores. An efficient data-mining tool known as the self-organizing map (SOM) achieves the required clustering and mapping/reference matching processes. In order to obtain a perception-based, speaker-independent parametric representation of the speech, three domain transformation techniques have been investigated. The first technique is based on a perceptual linear prediction (PLP) model, the second utilises a bark spectrum (BS) analysis and the third utilises mel-frequency cepstrum coefficients (MFCC). Reported evaluation results show that the proposed method provides high correlation with subjective listening quality scores, yielding accuracy similar to that of the ITU-T P.563 while maintaining a relatively low computational complexity. Results also demonstrate that the method outperforms the PESQ in a number of distortion conditions, such as those of speech degraded by channel impairments.acceptedpeer-reviewe
Neutron scattering and molecular correlations in a supercooled liquid
We show that the intermediate scattering function for neutron
scattering (ns) can be expanded naturely with respect to a set of molecular
correlation functions that give a complete description of the translational and
orientational two-point correlations in the liquid. The general properties of
this expansion are discussed with special focus on the -dependence and hints
for a (partial) determination of the molecular correlation functions from
neutron scattering results are given. The resulting representation of the
static structure factor is studied in detail for a model system using
data from a molecular dynamics simulation of a supercooled liquid of rigid
diatomic molecules. The comparison between the exact result for and
different approximations that result from a truncation of the series
representation demonstrates its good convergence for the given model system. On
the other hand it shows explicitly that the coupling between translational
(TDOF) and orientational degrees of freedom (ODOF) of each molecule and
rotational motion of different molecules can not be neglected in the
supercooled regime.Further we report the existence of a prepeak in the
ns-static structure factor of the examined fragile glassformer, demonstrating
that prepeaks can occur even in the most simple molecular liquids. Besides
examining the dependence of the prepeak on the scattering length and the
temperature we use the expansion of into molecular correlation
functions to point out intermediate range orientational order as its principle
origin.Comment: 13 pages, 7 figure
The effect of the spin-orbit interaction on the band gap of half-metals
The spin-orbit interaction can cause a nonvanishing density of states (DOS)
within the minority-spin band gap of half-metals around the Fermi level. We
examine the magnitude of the effect in Heusler alloys, zinc-blende half metals
and diluted magnetic semiconductors, using first-principles calculations. We
find that the ratio of spin-down to spin-up DOS at the Fermi level can range
from below 1% (e.g. 0.5% for NiMnSb) over several percents (4.2% for (Ga,Mn)As)
to 13% for MnBi.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
