Renormalized Kaluza-Klein theories
Using six-dimensional quantum electrodynamics () as an example we
study the one-loop renormalization of the theory both from the six and
four-dimensional points of view. Our main conclusion is that the properly
renormalized four dimensional theory never forgets its higher dimensional
origin. In particular, the coefficients of the neccessary extra counterterms in
the four dimensional theory are determined in a precise way. We check our

Serine, but not glycine, supports one-carbon metabolism and proliferation of cancer cells
Previous work has shown that some cancer cells are highly dependent on serine/glycine uptake for proliferation. Although serine and glycine can be interconverted and either might be used for nucleotide synthesis and one-carbon metabolism, we show that exogenous glycine cannot replace serine to support cancer cell proliferation. Cancer cells selectively consumed exogenous serine, which was converted to intracellular glycine and one-carbon units for building nucleotides. Restriction of exogenous glycine or depletion of the glycine cleavage system did not impede proliferation. In the absence of serine, uptake of exogenous glycine was unable to support nucleotide synthesis. Indeed, higher concentrations of glycine inhibited proliferation. Under these conditions, glycine was converted to serine, a reaction that would deplete the one-carbon pool. Providing one-carbon units by adding formate rescued nucleotide synthesis and growth of glycine-fed cells. We conclude that nucleotide synthesis and cancer cell proliferation are supported by serineârather than glycineâconsumption
Entanglement in Mesoscopic Structures: Role of Projection
We present a theoretical analysis of the appearance of entanglement in
non-interacting mesoscopic structures. Our setup involves two oppositely
polarized sources injecting electrons of opposite spin into the two incoming
leads. The mixing of these polarized streams in an ideal four-channel beam
splitter produces two outgoing streams with particular tunable correlations. A
Bell inequality test involving cross-correlated spin-currents in opposite leads
signals the presence of spin-entanglement between particles propagating in
different leads. We identify the role of fermionic statistics and projective
measurement in the generation of these spin-entangled electrons.Comment: 5 pages, 1 figur
Regularisation Techniques for the Radiative Corrections of Wilson lines and Kaluza-Klein states
Within an effective field theory framework we compute the most general
structure of the one-loop corrections to the 4D gauge couplings in one- and
two-dimensional orbifold compactifications with non-vanishing constant gauge
background (Wilson lines). Although such models are non-renormalisable, we keep
the analysis general by considering the one-loop corrections in three
regularisation schemes: dimensional regularisation (DR), Zeta-function
regularisation (ZR) and proper-time cut-off regularisation (PT). The relations
among the results obtained in these schemes are carefully addressed. With
minimal re-definitions of the parameters involved, the results obtained for the
radiative corrections can be applied to most orbifold compactifications with
one or two compact dimensions. The link with string theory is discussed. We
mention a possible implication for the gauge couplings unification in such

Bell inequalities and entanglement in solid state devices
Bell-inequality checks constitute a probe of entanglement -- given a source
of entangled particles, their violation are a signature of the non-local nature
of quantum mechanics. Here, we study a solid state device producing pairs of
entangled electrons, a superconductor emitting Cooper pairs properly split into
the two arms of a normal-metallic fork with the help of appropriate filters. We
formulate Bell-type inequalities in terms of current-current cross-correlators,
the natural quantities measured in mesoscopic physics; their violation provides
evidence that this device indeed is a source of entangled electrons.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figur
Can filesharers be triggered by economic incentives? Results of an experiment
Illegal filesharing on the internet leads to considerable financial losses for artists and copyright owners as well as producers and sellers of music. Thus far, measures to contain this phenomenon have been rather restrictive. However, there are still a considerable number of illegal systems, and users are able to decide quite freely between legal and illegal downloads because the latter are still difficult to sanction. Recent economic approaches account for the improved bargaining position of users. They are based on the idea of revenue-splitting between professional sellers and peers. In order to test such an innovative business model, the study reported in this article carried out an experiment with 100 undergraduate students, forming five small peer-to-peer networks.The networks were confronted with different economic conditions.The results indicate that even experienced filesharers hold favourable attitudes towards revenue-splitting.They seem to be willing to adjust their behaviour to different economic conditions
Ultraviolet sensitivity of rare decays in nonuniversal extra dimensional models
We consider a nonuniversal five dimensional model in which fermions are
localised on a four dimensional brane, while gauge bosons and a scalar doublet
can travel in the bulk. As a result of KK number non-conservation at the
brane-bulk intersection, the ultraviolet divergence does not cancel out in some
physical observables. For example, the decay amplitude is
linearly divergent, while -- mixing amplitude is log divergent. We
attempt to identify the exact source of this nonrenormalizability. We compare
and contrast our results with those obtained in the universal five dimensional

How gaming tourism affects tourism development through word-of-mouth communication regarding a destination: applying the integrated satisfaction theory
This study applies the concept of integrated satisfaction to investigate the effects of satisfaction with gaming and non-gaming experience on word-of-mouth communication regarding gaming destination. A survey in Macau (n = 298) indicates that integrated satisfaction has a partial mediating effect on the relationship between non-gaming satisfaction and word-of-mouth, and integrated satisfaction has a moderating and partial mediating effect on the relationship between gaming satisfaction and word-of-mouth. Therefore, gaming tourism enlarges the effect of the non-gaming tourism experience. Besides, gaming activities cause positive word-of-mouth communication for repeat tourists. This study extends our knowledge in gaming tourism and integrated satisfaction theory
B physics and extra dimensions
We compute the dominant new physics contributions to the processes Z -> b b and B - B in the context of two representative models with extra dimensions. The main thrust of the calculations focuses on how to control the effects of the infinite tower of Kaluza-Klein modes inside the relevant one-loop diagrams. By comparing the results with the existing experimental data, most importantly those for Rb, we show that one may derive interesting lower bounds on the size of the compactification scale Mc
The Intentional Use of Service Recovery Strategies to Influence Consumer Emotion, Cognition and Behaviour
Service recovery strategies have been identified as a critical factor in the success of. service organizations. This study develops a conceptual frame work to investigate how specific service recovery strategies influence the emotional, cognitive and negative behavioural responses of . consumers., as well as how emotion and cognition influence negative behavior. Understanding the impact of specific service recovery strategies will allow service providers' to more deliberately and intentionally engage in strategies that result in positive organizational outcomes. This study was conducted using a 2 x 2 between-subjects quasi-experimental design. The results suggest that service recovery has a significant impact on emotion, cognition and negative behavior. Similarly, satisfaction, negative emotion and positive emotion all influence negative behavior but distributive justice has no effect
