On decidability and tractability of querying in temporal EL
We study access to temporal data with TEL, a temporal extension of the tractable description logic EL. Our aim is to establish a clear computational complexity landscape for the atomic query answering problem, in terms of both data and combined complexity. Atomic queries in full TEL turn out to be undecidable even in data complexity. Motivated by the negative result, we identify well-behaved yet expressive fragments of TEL. Our main contributions are a semantic and sufficient syntactic conditions for decidability and three orthogonal tractable fragments, which are based on restricted use of rigid roles, temporal operators, and novel acyclicity conditions on the ontologies
On the non-efficient PAC learnability of conjunctive queries
This note serves three purposes: (i) we provide a self-contained exposition of the fact that conjunctive queries are not efficiently learnable in the Probably-Approximately-Correct (PAC) model, paying clear attention to the complicating fact that this concept class lacks the polynomial-size fitting property, a property that is tacitly assumed in much of the computational learning theory literature; (ii) we establish a strong negative PAC learnability result that applies to many restricted classes of conjunctive queries (CQs), including acyclic CQs for a wide range of notions of acyclicity; (iii) we show that CQs (and UCQs) are efficiently PAC learnable with membership queries.<p/
Intellectual property:an underestimated and undermanaged asset?
Intellectual Property (IP) is becoming more and more important for competitive advantage and companiesâ success. We argue that making IP a key issue is essential and will be one of the main factors driving future business success. Nevertheless many companies have not yet managed to integrate IP into strategy development and all critical business processes and thus do not get the maximum value out of it. This article aims to show how companies can systematically develop and implement an IP strategy following a three-step approach. First, it is important for the management to get a more transparent picture about strengths and weaknesses of the current IP position. Modern IP database tools help to achieve this goal. In the second phase the management should evaluate whether the company is successful in realizing the full market and strategic potential of technologies with IP strength and how to cope with areas of IP weaknesses. After an in-depth evaluation an IP-strategy should be defined and implemented. In our experience strategy execution requires a clear commitment from the top management, clear roles & responsibilities, proper monitoring, a more intensive collaboration on IP issues between R&D, Marketing, Patent attorneys and often even changes in corporate structures and processes
QCD factorization for forward hadron scattering at high energies
We consider the QCD factorization of DIS structure functions at small x and
amplitudes of 2->2 -hadronic forward scattering at high energy. We show that
both collinear and k_T-factorization for these processes can be obtained
approximately as reductions of a more general (totally unintegrated) form of
the factorization. The requirement of ultraviolet and infrared stability of the
factorization convolutions allows us to obtain restrictions on the fits for the

Model Comparison Games for Horn Description Logics
Horn description logics are syntactically defined fragments of standard description logics that fall within the Horn fragment of first-order logic and for which ontology-mediated query answering is in PTIME for data complexity. They were independently introduced in modal logic to capture the intersection of Horn first-order logic with modal logic. In this paper, we introduce model comparison games for the basic Horn description logic hornALC (corresponding to the basic Horn modal logic) and use them to obtain an Ehrenfeucht-Fra Ìısse Ì type definability result and a van Benthem style expressive completeness result for hornALC. We also establish a finite model theory version of the latter. The Ehrenfeucht-Fra Ìısse Ì type definability result is used to show that checking hornALC indistinguishability of models is EXPTIME-complete, which is in sharp contrast to ALC indistinguishability (i.e., bisimulation equivalence) checkable in PTIME. In addition, we explore the behavior of Horn fragments of more expressive description and modal logics by defining a Horn guarded fragment of first-order logic and introducing model comparison games for it
Polyethylene imine-based receptor immobilization for label free bioassays
Polyethylene imine (PEI) based immobilization of antibodies is described and the concept is proved on the
label free assay of C-Reactive Protein (CRP). This novel immobilization method is composed of a hyperbranched
PEI layer which was deposited at a high pH (9.5) on the sensor surface. The free amino groups
of PEI were derivatized with neutravidin by Biotin N-hydroxysuccinimide ester and the biotinylated
anti-CRP antibody immobilized on this layer. Direct binding assay of recombinant CRP was successfully
performed in the low ÎŒg/ml concentrations using a label free optical waveguide biosensor
Suppression factors in diffractive photoproduction of dijets
After new publications of H1 data for the diffractive photoproduction of
dijets, which overlap with the earlier published H1 data and the recently
published data of the ZEUS collaboration, have appeared, we have recalculated
the cross sections for this process in next-to-leading order (NLO) of
perturbative QCD to see whether they can be interpreted consistently. The
results of these calculations are compared to the data of both collaborations.
We find that the NLO cross sections disagree with the data, showing that
factorization breaking occurs at that order. If direct and resolved
contributions are both suppressed by the same amount, the global suppression
factor depends on the transverse-energy cut. However, by suppressing only the
resolved contribution, also reasonably good agreement with all the data is
found with a suppression factor independent of the transverse-energy cut.Comment: 28 pages, 11 figures, 3 table
A Radiation Analysis of 500W RTPV System having Cylindrical Sources
In this work, the radiation shielding analysis for a RTPV (Radioisotope Thermo-Photo-Voltaic) device using 238PuO2 was performed to estimate the radiation dose distribution over source region and radiation doses in a specified tally zone. The radiation source intensities and spectra were evaluated with ORIGEN-S and the detailed shielding analyses were performed with MCNP6 and MONACO/MAVRIC (in SCALE 6.1). In particular, comparative shielding analysis using two different types of RTPV (cubic homogeneous source type and cylindrical heterogeneous source type) were performed to show their relative performances. The results show that the RTPV device using the heterogeneous cylindrical source type has lower dose values by 5~11% depending on the packing factor at the measurement cell than the one using the homogeneous cubic source type. The additional thermal analysis using COMSOL shows that the temperature distribution of the heterogeneous cylindrical source type is more flat than that of a homogeneous cubic source type
