Modular High-Temperature Gas-Cooled Reactor short term thermal response to flow and reactivity transients
The analyses reported here have been conducted at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) for the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission's (NRC's) Division of Regulatory Applications of the Office of Nuclear Regulatory Research. The short-term thermal response of the Modular High-Temperature Gas-Cooled Reactor (MHTGR) is analyzed for a range of flow and reactivity transients. These include loss of forced circulation (LOFC) without scram, moisture ingress, spurious withdrawal of a control rod group, hypothetical large and rapid positive reactivity insertion, and a rapid core cooling event. The coupled heat transfer-neutron kinetics model is also described
Lepton masses in a supersymmetric 3-3-1 model
We consider the mass generation for both charginos and neutralinos in a 3-3-1
supersymmetric model. We show that R-parity breaking interactions leave the
electron and one of the neutrinos massless at the tree level. However the same
interactions induce masses for these particles at the 1-loop level. Unlike the
similar situation in the MSSM the masses of the neutralinos are related to the
masses of the charginos.Comment: RevTex, 11 pages incluing 2 .eps figures. Extended published versio
Neutrino masses through see-saw mechanism in 3-3-1 models
Some years ago it was shown by Ma that in the context of the electroweak
standard model there are, at the tree level, only three ways to generate small
neutrino masses by the see-saw mechanism via one effective dimension-five
operator. Here we extend this approach to 3-3-1 chiral models showing that in
this case there are several dimension-five operators and we also consider their
tree level realization.Comment: RevTex, 7 pages and 4 .eps figures. Version published in Phys. Rev.

On the Size of the Dark Side of the Solar Neutrino Parameter Space
We present an analysis of the MSW neutrino oscillation solutions of the solar
neutrino problem in the framework of two-neutrino mixing in the enlarged
parameter space with . Recently, it was pointed out that the allowed region of
parameters from a fit to the measured total rates can extend to values (the so called ``dark side'') when higher confidence levels
are allowed. The purpose of this letter is to reanalize the problem including
all the solar neutrino data available, to discuss the dependence on the
statistical criteria in the determination of the CL of the ``dark side'' and to
extract the corresponding limits on the largest mixing allowed by the data. Our
results show that when the Super-Kamiokande data on the zenith angle
distribution of events and the spectrum information is included, the regions
extend more into the dark side.Comment: 5 pages, latex file using RevTex. Two-layer aproximation for the Earth

Seesaw tau lepton mass and calculable neutrino masses in a 3-3-1 model
In a version of the 3-3-1 model proposed by Duong and Ma the introduction of
the scalar sextet for giving mass to the charged leptons is avoided by adding a
singlet charged lepton. We show that in this case the lepton gains mass
through a seesaw--like mechanism. Besides we show how to generate neutrino
masses at the tree and at the 1-loop level with the respective
Maki-Nakagawa-Sakata leptonic mixing matrices.Comment: revtex, 5 pages and one eps figure. Published versio
The calibration of the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory using uniformly distributed radioactive sources
The production and analysis of distributed sources of 24Na and 222Rn in the
Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO) are described. These unique sources provided
accurate calibrations of the response to neutrons, produced through
photodisintegration of the deuterons in the heavy water target, and to low
energy betas and gammas. The application of these sources in determining the
neutron detection efficiency and response of the 3He proportional counter
array, and the characteristics of background Cherenkov light from trace amounts
of natural radioactivity is described.Comment: 24 pages, 13 figure
Leptogenesis and Neutrino Oscillations Within A Predictive G(224)/SO(10)-Framework
A framework based on an effective symmetry that is either G(224)= SU(2)_L x
SU(2)_R xSU(4)^c or SO(10) has been proposed (a few years ago) that
successfully describes the masses and mixings of all fermions including
neutrinos, with seven predictions, in good accord with the data. Baryogenesis
via leptogenesis is considered within this framework by allowing for natural
phases (~ 1/20-1/2) in the entries of the Dirac and Majorana mass-matrices. It
is shown that the framework leads quite naturally, for both thermal as well as
non-thermal leptogenesis, to the desired magnitude for the baryon asymmetry.
This result is obtained in full accord with the observed features of the
atmospheric and solar neutrino oscillations, as well as with those of the quark
and charged lepton masses and mixings, and the gravitino-constraint. Hereby one
obtains a unified description of fermion masses, neutrino oscillations and
baryogenesis (via leptogenesis) within a single predictive framework.Comment: Efficiency factor updated, some clarifications and new references

Stringent Constraints on Cosmological Neutrino-Antineutrino Asymmetries from Synchronized Flavor Transformation
We assess a mechanism which can transform neutrino-antineutrino asymmetries
between flavors in the early universe, and confirm that such transformation is
unavoidable in the near bi-maximal framework emerging for the neutrino mixing
matrix. We show that the process is a standard Mikheyev-Smirnov-Wolfenstein
flavor transformation dictated by a synchronization of momentum states. We also
show that flavor ``equilibration'' is a special feature of maximal mixing, and
carefully examine new constraints placed on neutrino asymmetries. In
particular, the big bang nucleosynthesis limit on electron neutrino degeneracy
xi_e < 0.04 does not apply directly to all flavors, yet confirmation of the
large-mixing-angle solution to the solar neutrino problem will eliminate the
possibility of degenerate big bang nucleosynthesis.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures; minor changes to match PRD versio
Leptogenesis and low energy observables in left-right symmetric models
In the context of left-right symmetric models we study the connection of
leptogenesis and low energy parameters such as neutrinoless double beta decay
and leptonic CP violation. Upon imposition of a unitarity constraint, the
neutrino parameters are significantly restricted and the Majorana phases are
determined within a narrow range, depending on the kind of solar solution. One
of the Majorana phases gets determined to a good accuracy and thereby the
second phase can be probed from the results of neutrinoless double beta decay
experiments. We examine the contributions of the solar and atmospheric mass
squared differences to the asymmetry and find that in general the solar scale
dominates. In order to let the atmospheric scale dominate, some finetuning
between one of the Majorana phases and the Dirac CP phase is required. In this
case, one of the Majorana phases is determined by the amount of CP violation in
oscillation experiments.Comment: 18 pages, 6 figures. Matches version to appear in PR
On Neutrino Masses and a Low Breaking Scale of Left-Right Symmetry
In left-right symmetric models (LRSM) the light neutrino masses arise from
two sources: the seesaw mechanism and a VEV of an SU(2) triplet. If the
left-right symmetry breaking, , is low, v_R\lsim15\TeV, the
contributions to the light neutrino masses from both the seesaw mechanism and
the triplet Yukawa couplings are expected to be well above the experimental
bounds. We present a minimal LRSM with an additional U(1) symmetry in which the
masses induced by the two sources are below the eV scale and the two-fold
problem is solved. We further show that, if the U(1) symmetry is also
responsible for the lepton flavor structure, the model yields a small mixing
angle within the first two lepton generations.Comment: 18 pages references added published versio
