    Structural Refinement for the Modal nu-Calculus

    We introduce a new notion of structural refinement, a sound abstraction of logical implication, for the modal nu-calculus. Using new translations between the modal nu-calculus and disjunctive modal transition systems, we show that these two specification formalisms are structurally equivalent. Using our translations, we also transfer the structural operations of composition and quotient from disjunctive modal transition systems to the modal nu-calculus. This shows that the modal nu-calculus supports composition and decomposition of specifications.Comment: Accepted at ICTAC 201

    Smooth geometries with four charges in four dimensions

    A class of axially symmetric, rotating four-dimensional geometries carrying D1, D5, KK monopole and momentum charges is constructed. The geometries are found to be free of horizons and singulaties, and are candidates to be the gravity duals of microstates of the (0,4) CFT. These geometries are constructed by performing singularity analysis on a suitably chosen class of solutions of six-dimensional minimal supergravity written over a Gibbons-Hawking base metric.     Microscopic Description of Black Rings in AdS/CFT

    We discuss some aspects of the recently discovered BPS black ring solutions in terms of the AdS/CFT correspondence. In the type IIB frame in which the black ring carries the charges of the D1-D5-P system, we propose a microscopic description of the rings in the orbifold CFT governing this system. In our proposal, the CFT effectively splits into two parts: one part captures the supertube-like properties of the ring, and the other captures the entropy. We can also understand the black ring entropy by relating the geometry near the ring to BPS black holes in four dimensions, although this latter approach does not directly lead to an identification of black rings in terms of the D1-D5-P CFT.Comment: 18 pages, harvmac. v2 - minor typo

    Hennessy-Milner Logic with Greatest Fixed Points as a Complete Behavioural Specification Theory

    There are two fundamentally different approaches to specifying and verifying properties of systems. The logical approach makes use of specifications given as formulae of temporal or modal logics and relies on efficient model checking algorithms; the behavioural approach exploits various equivalence or refinement checking methods, provided the specifications are given in the same formalism as implementations. In this paper we provide translations between the logical formalism of Hennessy-Milner logic with greatest fixed points and the behavioural formalism of disjunctive modal transition systems. We also introduce a new operation of quotient for the above equivalent formalisms, which is adjoint to structural composition and allows synthesis of missing specifications from partial implementations. This is a substantial generalisation of the quotient for deterministic modal transition systems defined in earlier papers

    All the supersymmetric solutions of N=1,d=5 ungauged supergravity

    We classify the supersymmetric solutions of ungauged N=1 d=5 SUGRA coupled to vector multiplets and hypermultiplets. All the solutions can be seen as deformations of solutions with frozen hyperscalars. We show explicitly how the 5-dimensional Reissner-Nordstrom black hole is deformed when hyperscalars are living on SO(4,1)/SO(4) are turned on, reducing its supersymmetry from 1/2 to 1/8. We also describe in the timelike and null cases the solutions that have one extra isometry and can be reduced to N=2,d=4 solutions. Our formulae allows the uplifting of certain N=2,d=4 black holes to N=1,d=5 black holes on KK monopoles or to pp-waves propagating along black strings.Comment: Some typos fixed and some paragraphs improved. 44 pages, Latex 2e file, no figures.     Passivation of a Metal Contact with a Tunneling Layer

    AbstractThe potential of contact passivation for increasing cell performance is indicated by several results reported in the literature. However, scant characterization of the tunneling layers used for that purpose has been reported. In this paper, contact passivation is investigated by insertion of an ultra-thin AlOx layer between an n-type emitter and a Ti/Pd/Ag contact. By using a 1.5nm thick layer, an increase of the minority carrier lifetime by a factor of 2.7 is achieved. Since current-voltage measurements indicate that an ohmic behavior is conserved for AlOx layers as thick as 1.5nm, a 1.5nm AlOx layer is found to be a candidate of choice for contact passivation

    5D Attractors with Higher Derivatives

    We analyze higher derivative corrections to attractor geometries in five dimensions. We find corrected AdS_3xS^2 geometries by solving the equations of motion coming from a recently constructed four-derivative supergravity action in five dimensions. The result allows us to explicitly verify a previous anomaly based derivation of the AdS_3 central charges of this theory. Also, by dimensional reduction we compare our results with those of the 4D higher derivative attractor, and find complete agreement.Comment: 18 pages, harvma

    Thermal Pions at Finite Isospin Chemical Potential

    The density corrections, in terms of the isospin chemical potential μI\mu_I, to the mass of the pions are studied in the framework of the SU(2) low energy effective chiral lagrangian. The pion decay constant fπ(T,μI)f_{\pi}(T, \mu_{I}) is also analized. As a function of temperature for μI=0\mu_I =0, the mass remains quite stable, starting to grow for very high values of TT, confirming previous results. However, there are interesting corrections to the mass when both effects (temperature and chemical potential) are simultaneously present. At zero temperature the π±\pi ^{\pm} should condensate when μI=mπ\mu_{I} = \mp m_{\pi}. This is not longer valid anymore at finite TT. The mass of the π0\pi_0 acquires also a non trivial dependence on μI\mu_I due to the finite temperature.Comment: 13 pages, 5 figure
