    Parabolic curves in a Helmholtz solution for a bowed string

    If one is not familiar with the physics of the violin, it is not easy to guess, even for an experimental physicist, that the so-called Helmholtz motion can be obtained as a solution to the one-dimensional wave equation for the motion of a bowed violin string. It is worth visualising this aspect from a graphical perspective without recourse to ordinary Fourier analysis, as has customarily been done. We show in this paper how to obtain the shape of the Helmholtz trajectory, that is, two mirror-symmetric parabolas, in the ideal case of no losses from internal dissipation and no viscous drag from the air and the non-rigid end supports. We also show that the velocity profile of the Helmholtz motion is also a solution of the one-dimensional wave equation. Finally, we again derive the parabolic shape of the Helmholtz trajectory by applying the principle of energy conservation to a violin string

    Self-Organized Criticality in a Fibre-Bundle type model

    The dynamics of a fibre-bundle type model with equal load sharing rule is numerically studied. The system, formed by N elements, is driven by a slow increase of the load upon it which is removed in a novel way through internal transfers to the elements broken during avalanches. When an avalanche ends, failed elements are regenerated with strengths taken from a probability distribution. For a large enough N and certain restrictions on the distribution of individual strengths, the system reaches a self-organized critical state where the spectrum of avalanche sizes is a power law with an exponent τ1.5\tau\simeq 1.5.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures.     Methods and Tools for Objective Assessment of Psychomotor Skills in Laparoscopic Surgery

    Training and assessment paradigms for laparoscopic surgical skills are evolving from traditional mentor–trainee tutorship towards structured, more objective and safer programs. Accreditation of surgeons requires reaching a consensus on metrics and tasks used to assess surgeons’ psychomotor skills. Ongoing development of tracking systems and software solutions has allowed for the expansion of novel training and assessment means in laparoscopy. The current challenge is to adapt and include these systems within training programs, and to exploit their possibilities for evaluation purposes. This paper describes the state of the art in research on measuring and assessing psychomotor laparoscopic skills. It gives an overview on tracking systems as well as on metrics and advanced statistical and machine learning techniques employed for evaluation purposes. The later ones have a potential to be used as an aid in deciding on the surgical competence level, which is an important aspect when accreditation of the surgeons in particular, and patient safety in general, are considered. The prospective of these methods and tools make them complementary means for surgical assessment of motor skills, especially in the early stages of training. Successful examples such as the Fundamentals of Laparoscopic Surgery should help drive a paradigm change to structured curricula based on objective parameters. These may improve the accreditation of new surgeons, as well as optimize their already overloaded training schedules

    The lower Permian (Autunian) has not been identified up to now in the subsurface of the Tertiary Ebro Basin because of the scarcity of borehole samples available and the systematic attribution to the Carboniferous without any paleontological data, of the siliciclastic sediments found at the base of some of them, well above the hercynian basement and unmetamorfosed Grey and black shales recovered from cores preserved in the REPSOL archives of the Caspe-1 oil well between meters 1.437 and I .449 have yielded a palynogical assemblage composed by Vittatina cf. costabilis, Potonieisporites novices- bhardwaji, Nuskoisporites sp. and other forms not so well preserved. This association has a Lower Permian (Autunian) age and compares well with other findings in the Iberian Ranges, the Pyrenees and other areas in Iberia, shading a new light on the early stages of evolution of the central and NE parts of Iberia just after the Hercynian orogeny

    Amplification of evanescent waves in a lossy left-handed material slab

    We carry out finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations, with a specially-designed boundary condition, on pure evanescent waves interacting with a lossy left-handed material (LHM) slab. Our results provide the first full-wave numerical evidence for the amplification of evanescent waves inside a LHM slab of finite absorption. The amplification is due to the interactions between the evanescent waves and the coupled surface polaritons at the two surfaces of the LHM slab and the physical process can be described by a simple model.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure

    E-MIS validity applied to TELMA enhanced learning environment

    Enhanced learning environments are arising with great success within the field of cognitive skills training in minimally invasive surgery (MIS) because they provides multiple benefits since they avoid time, spatial and cost constraints. TELMA [1,2] is a new technology enhanced learning platform that promotes collaborative and ubiquitous training of surgeons. This platform is based on four main modules: an authoring tool, a learning content and knowledge management system, an evaluation module and a professional network. TELMA has been designed and developed focused on the user; therefore it is necessary to carry out a user validation as final stage of the development. For this purpose, e-MIS validity [3] has been defined. This validation includes usability, contents and functionality validities both for the development and production stages of any e-Learning web platform. Using e-MIS validity, the e-Learning is fully validated since it includes subjective and objective metrics. The purpose of this study is to specify and apply a set of objective and subjective metrics using e-MIS validity to test usability, contents and functionality of TELMA environment within the development stage
