Actors, actions, and initiative in normative system specification
The logic of norms, called deontic logic, has been used to specify normative constraints for information systems. For example, one can specify in deontic logic the constraints that a book borrowed from a library should be returned within three weeks, and that if it is not returned, the library should send a reminder. Thus, the notion of obligation to perform an action arises naturally in system specification. Intuitively, deontic logic presupposes the concept of anactor who undertakes actions and is responsible for fulfilling obligations. However, the concept of an actor has not been formalized until now in deontic logic. We present a formalization in dynamic logic, which allows us to express the actor who initiates actions or choices. This is then combined with a formalization, presented earlier, of deontic logic in dynamic logic, which allows us to specify obligations, permissions, and prohibitions to perform an action. The addition of actors allows us to expresswho has the responsibility to perform an action. In addition to the application of the concept of an actor in deontic logic, we discuss two other applications of actors. First, we show how to generalize an approach taken up by De Nicola and Hennessy, who eliminate from CCS in favor of internal and external choice. We show that our generalization allows a more accurate specification of system behavior than is possible without it. Second, we show that actors can be used to resolve a long-standing paradox of deontic logic, called the paradox of free-choice permission. Towards the end of the paper, we discuss whether the concept of an actor can be combined with that of an object to formalize the concept of active objects
Comment on "Role of heavy meson exchange in near threshold N N --> d pi"
In a recent paper by C. J. Horowitz (Phys. Rev. C {\bf 48}, 2920 (1993)) a
heavy meson exchange is incorporated into threshold NN --> d pi to enhance the
grossly underestimated cross section. However, that calculation uses an
unjustified assumption on the initial and final momenta, which causes an
overestimate of this effect by a factor of 3--4. I point out that the inclusion
of the Delta(1232) isobar increases the cross section significantly even at
threshold.Comment: 7 pages, figures by fax or mail from [email protected]
Early ontogeny of an endangered, relict, cold-water cyprinid from Lesotho Oreodaimon quathlambae (Barnard, 1938)
Specifying Reusable Components
Reusable software components need expressive specifications. This paper
outlines a rigorous foundation to model-based contracts, a method to equip
classes with strong contracts that support accurate design, implementation, and
formal verification of reusable components. Model-based contracts
conservatively extend the classic Design by Contract with a notion of model,
which underpins the precise definitions of such concepts as abstract
equivalence and specification completeness. Experiments applying model-based
contracts to libraries of data structures suggest that the method enables
accurate specification of practical software

Predictions of striking energy and angular dependence in pp --> (pp)_S-wave pi^0 production
A phenomenological calculation from threshold to 800 MeV of the initial
proton beam energy is presented to describe recent data on the reaction pp -->
(pp)_S-wave pi^0 with a low energy cut on the final state diproton excitation
energy. A strong forward dip is obtained in the differential cross section as
in the data from COSY at 800 MeV, although the absolute value of the forward
cross section is too low. Earlier low energy data from CELSIUS are reasonably
well reproduced. In the unexplored energy interval between these two
experiments the model predicts a spectacular energy dependence both in the
forward direction and in the angle-integrated cross section.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figure

Positive pion absorption on 3He using modern trinucleon wave functions
We study pion absorption on 3He employing trinucleon wave functions
calculated from modern realistic NN interactions (Paris, CD Bonn). Even though
the use of the new wave functions leads to a significant improvement over older
calculations with regard to both cross section and polarization data, there are
hints that polarization data with quasifree kinematics cannot be described by
just two-nucleon absorption mechanisms.Comment: 14 pages, 6 figure
Characterization of A Type 1 Collagen Targeted PET Tracer
poster abstractRenal fibrosis occurs in many diseases of the kidney, including chronic kidney disease (CKD). Renal fibrosis is characterized by an excessive accumulation and deposition of extracellular matrix components, mainly type I collagen. Determination of the presence and extent of renal fibrosis may aid in the prediction of the long-term outcome of renal function in CKD. Biopsy is considered the gold standard in the diagnosis of renal fibrosis; however biopsy is inherently invasive and does not easily lend itself to following the disease thru time. A noninvasive technique such as PET would both allow the detection and monitoring of renal fibrosis progression. A type I collagen-specific cyclic peptide, EP-3533, has been identified and used as a contrast agent in MRI after conjugation with three Gd-DOTA chelates (Caravan et al 2007). To explore the potential for imaging with PET, which can provide a quantitative assessment of regional peptide localization, we have prepared an EP-3533 conjugate incorporating the NODAGA chelating agent at its amine terminus, and radiolabeled that conjugate with generator-produced positron-emitting 68Ga (68-minute half-life). In vitro association kinetics binding of the labeled peptide was performed in collagen type 1 coated plates, where 68GaDOTA-EP-3533 exhibited a Kd of 0.2 M for type I collagen. To better characterize the tracer in an animal model, renal fibrosis was induced in male Wistar rats by clamping the renal artery and vein of the left kidney for 50 minutes. Thus providing both a diseased and control kidney in each animal. Approximately 10 weeks after surgery both left (fibrotic) and right (normal) kidneys were resected and frozen and mounted in OTC for cryotomy. Longitudinal sections obtained from each kidney were used for autoradiography. ROI analysis found an approximate two- to four-fold region-dependent increase in binding in fibrotic tissue compared to normal. Collagen and non-collagen protein levels were determined in the same kidney sections that had been used for autoradiography using a commercially available staining assay. This assay yielded a 1.7-fold difference in collagen levels between normal and fibrotic tissue. Additionally, representative slices were stained with Sirius Red for histological evaluation. Preliminary data indicates that 68Ga-NODAGA-EP-3533 binds to collagen-rich tissue, consistent with the literature for Gd-DOTA-EP-3533. In vivo studies in an animal model of fibrosis are needed to further characterize this tracer and its potential for PET tracer detection and monitoring of Renal Fibrosis
