Selective oxidation of methane to ethane and ethylene over various oxide catalysts

    Get PDF
Preliminary results are reported for the oxidative coupling of methane to give ethane/ethylene mixtures over a series of different catalyst formulations; the temperature range studied is 650–850°C. A comparison is made of the behaviour of lead/alumina and lithium/magnesia materials. It is found that the former samples give ethane and ethylene plus a predominance of CO2 whereas the latter give ethane and ethylene plus a mixture of CO, CO2 and H2; at higher temperatures, the lead materials give also H2 and CO. The lithium-containing materials are much more stable than the lead-containing ones; the latter lose lead, probably by volatilisation of the metal. A number of other oxide materials have also been examined and have been found to be less effective, having lower activities and selectivities than the lead- and lithium-containing systems

Metabolic and genetic aspects of thiopurine metabolism

    Get PDF
Side-effects from drugs often have a genetic background. The described PhD research focuses on the causes of side-effects from certain anti-inflammatory drugs, the thiopurines. These are often used to treat (auto) immune diseases. In the case of thiopurine use it is important to determine the activity of the enzymes thiopurine-S-methyltransferase (TPMT) and inosine trifosfatase (ITPase) to prevent serious side-effects, such as bone marrow suppression and pneumonia and the involved hospitalisation. The research also shows that ITPase plays a role in the progression of pulmonary Langerhans’ cell histiocytosis (PLCH), a serious lung disease

L.M.Chernovaty, T.K.Varenko. An impact of the interpreters’ background knowledge structure upon their interpretation of mythological allusions. Basing upon an experimental research into the ways English sentences containing mythology-related allusions are interpreted into Ukrainian, the author argues for the necessity to include the corresponding elements into the subject-matter of the interpreter-training course to provide for the acquisition of background knowledge in mythology and folklore related to the cultures contacting in the process of interpreting. Optimization of online patient scheduling with urgencies and preferences

    Get PDF
We consider the online problem of scheduling patients with urgencies and preferences on hospital resources with limited capacity. To solve this complex scheduling problem effectively we have to address the following sub problems: determining the allocation of capacity to patient groups, setting dynamic rules for exceptions to the allocation, ordering timeslots based on scheduling efficiency, and incorporating patient preferences over appointment times in the scheduling process. We present a scheduling approach with optimized parameter values that solves these issues simultaneously. In our experiments, we show how our approach outperforms standard scheduling benchmarks for a wide range of scenarios, and how we can efficiently trade-off scheduling performance and fulfilling patient preferences

A thread calculus with molecular dynamics

    Get PDF
We present a theory of threads, interleaving of threads, and interaction between threads and services with features of molecular dynamics, a model of computation that bears on computations in which dynamic data structures are involved. Threads can interact with services of which the states consist of structured data objects and computations take place by means of actions which may change the structure of the data objects. The features introduced include restriction of the scope of names used in threads to refer to data objects. Because that feature makes it troublesome to provide a model based on structural operational semantics and bisimulation, we construct a projective limit model for the theory.Comment: 47 pages; examples and results added, phrasing improved, references replace
