    Le phénomène urbain est l'un des traits les plus frappants de notre civilisation contemporaine, dont la ville est le creuset. Son importance est telle qu'il devrait être au premier plan des préoccupations de la géographie humaine. L'auteur a donc fait une enquête auprès d'Instituts de géographie français pour connaître la place de la géographie urbaine dans la formation des jeunes géographes et leurs recherches ultérieures. Il a rencontré des professeurs qui participent à l'action par des travaux en urbanisme et en aménagement urbain pour des agences ou des organismes gouvernementaux. Ce sont les résultats de cette enquête et les réflexions qu'elle a, suscitées que nous livre ici l'auteurThe urban phenomenon is one of the most striking features of contemporary civilisation and, as such, should merit a priority status in human geography. With this in mind the author undertook a survey of the various French institutes of geography in order to determine the place of urban geography in the curriculum and in research. Professors active in government-sponsored urbanism and town planning studies were also interviewed. The results of this survey are analysed and discussed in this article

    Plutôt que d'étudier les dimensions idéologiques du discours des géographes, cet article s'interroge sur la pertinence et les méthodes possibles d'une lecture de l'inscription de la dimension idéologique d'une société dans l'espace que celle-ci a produit. Rappelant l'importance d'une réflexion géographique sur les caractéristiques spatiales liées à l'idéologie d'une formation sociale, les auteurs s'appuient sur les études ayant pour but de mesurer la qualité de la vie, telle que perçue par les habitants, ainsi que sur celles portant sur la perception et l'économie politique du risque nucléaire pour reconnaître l'intérêt et la possibilité, sous certaines conditions, d'une étude scientifique des faits idéologiques, tels qu'en dernière analyse ils se lisent dans l'espace géographique lui-même.Rather than studying the ideological dimension of geographical discourse, this article addresses the question of the relevance and possible methodology for analyzing ideological dimensions, within the space created by a given society. Recalling the importance of a geographical approach to spatial characteristics linked to the ideologies of social formations, the authors base their work on studies whose aim is to measure the quality of life, as perceived by the population, as well as those dealing with the awareness and political economy of nuclear risks, to define the relevance and feasibility, under certain circumstances, of the scientific study of ideological phenomena, such as can be ascertained, in the final analysis, from a given geographical space

    High temperature superconducting infrared imaging satellite

    A low earth orbiting platform for an infrared (IR) sensor payload is examined based on the requirements of a Naval Research Laboratory statement of work. The experiment payload is a 1.5-meter square by 0.5-meter high cubic structure equipped with the imaging system, radiators, and spacecraft mounting interface. The orbit is circular at 509 km (275 nmi) altitude and 70 deg. inclination. The spacecraft is three-axis stabilized with pointing accuracy of plus or minus 0.5 deg. in each axis. The experiment payload requires two 15-minute sensing periods over two contiguous orbit periods for 30 minutes of sensing time per day. The spacecraft design is presented for launch via a Delta 2 rocket. Subsystem designs include attitude control, propulsion, electric power, telemetry, tracking and command, thermal design, structure, and cost analysis

    Alessi 95 and the short period Cepheid SU Cassiopeiae

    The parameters for the newly-discovered open cluster Alessi 95 are established on the basis of available photometric and spectroscopic data, in conjunction with new observations. Colour excesses for spectroscopically-observed B and A-type stars near SU Cas follow a reddening relation described by E(U-B)/E(B-V)=0.83+0.02*E(B-V), implying a value of R=Av/E(B-V)~2.8 for the associated dust. Alessi 95 has a mean reddening of E(B-V)_(B0)=0.35+-0.02 s.e., an intrinsic distance modulus of Vo-Mv=8.16+-0.04 s.e. (+-0.21 s.d.), d=429+-8 pc, and an estimated age of 10^8.2 yr from ZAMS fitting of available UBV, CCD BV, NOMAD, and 2MASS JHKs observations of cluster stars. SU Cas is a likely cluster member, with an inferred space reddening of E(B-V)=0.33+-0.02 and a luminosity of =-3.15+-0.07 s.e., consistent with overtone pulsation (P_FM=2.75 d), as also implied by the Cepheid's light curve parameters, rate of period increase, and Hipparcos parallaxes for cluster stars. There is excellent agreement of the distance estimates for SU Cas inferred from cluster ZAMS fitting, its pulsation parallax derived from the infrared surface brightness technique, and Hipparcos parallaxes, which all agree to within a few percent.Comment: Accepted for Publication (MNRAS

    Dietary Sodium Restriction Reverses Vascular Endothelial Dysfunction in Middle-Aged/Older Adults With Moderately Elevated Systolic Blood Pressure

    ObjectivesThis study sought to determine the efficacy of dietary sodium restriction (DSR) for improving vascular endothelial dysfunction in middle-aged/older adults with moderately elevated systolic blood pressure (SBP) (130–159 mm Hg) and the associated physiological mechanisms.BackgroundVascular endothelial dysfunction develops with advancing age and elevated SBP, contributing to increased cardiovascular risk. DSR lowers BP, but its effect on vascular endothelial function and mechanisms involved are unknown.MethodsSeventeen subjects (11 men and 6 women; mean age, 62 ± 7 years) completed a, randomized crossover study of 4 weeks of both low (DSR) and normal sodium intake. Vascular endothelial function (endothelium-dependent dilation; EDD), nitric oxide (NO)/tetrahydrobiopterin (BH4) bioavailability, and oxidative stress-associated mechanisms were assessed following each condition.ResultsUrinary sodium excretion was reduced by ∼50% (to 70 ± 30 mmol/day), and conduit (brachial artery flow-mediated dilation [FMDBA]) and resistance (forearm blood flow responses to acetylcholine [FBFACh]) artery EDD were 68% and 42% (peak FBFACh) higher following DSR (p < 0.005). Low sodium markedly enhanced NO-mediated EDD (greater ΔFBFACh with endothelial NO synthase inhibition) without changing endothelial NO synthase expression/activation (Ser 1177 phosphorylation), restored BH4 bioactivity (less ΔFMDBA with acute BH4), abolished tonic superoxide suppression of EDD (less ΔFMDBA and ΔFBFACh with ascorbic acid infusion), and increased circulating superoxide dismutase activity (all p < 0.05). These effects were independent of ΔSBP. Other subject characteristics/dietary factors and endothelium-independent dilation were unchanged.ConclusionsDSR largely reversed both macro- and microvascular endothelial dysfunction by enhancing NO and BH4 bioavailability and reducing oxidative stress. Our findings support the emerging concept that DSR induces “vascular protection” beyond that attributable to its BP-lowering effects

    A small source in Q2237+0305 ?

    Microlensing in Q2237+0305 between 1985 and 1995 (eg. Irwin et al. 1989; Corrigan et al. 1991; Ostensen et al. 1996) has been interpreted in two different ways; as microlensing by stellar mass objects of a continuum source having dimensions significantly smaller than the microlens Einstein radius (ER) (eg. Wambsganss, Paczynski & Schneider 1990; Rauch & Blandford 1991), and as microlensing by very low mass objects of a source as large as 5 ER (Refsdal & Stabell 1993; Haugan 1996). In this paper we present evidence in favour of a small source. Limits on the source size (in units of ER) are obtained from the combination of limits on the number of microlens Einstein radii crossed by the source during the monitoring period with two separate light-curve features. Firstly, recently published monitoring data (Wozniak et al. 2000; OGLE web page) show large variations (~0.8-1.5 magnitudes) between image brightnesses over a period of 700 days or ~15% of the monitoring period. Secondly, the 1988 peak in the image A light-curve had a duration that is a small fraction (<0.02) of the monitoring period. Such rapid microlensing rises and short microlensing peaks only occur for small sources. We find that the observed large-rapid variation limits the source size to be <0.2 ER (95% confidence). The width of the light-curve peak provides a stronger constraint of <0.02 ER (99% confidence). The Einstein radius (projected into the source plane) of the average microlens mass (m) in Q2237+0305 is ER ~ 10^{17}\sqrt{m} cm. The interpretation that stars are responsible for microlensing in Q2237+0305 therefore results in limits on the continuum source size that are consistent with current accretion disc theory.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in M.N.R.A.
