Political Globalization and Civil War in Former British Colonies

The purpose of this paper to determine why civil war onset reduces political globalization in former British colonies. I set out by testing the relationship between being a former British colony and civil war presence, demonstrating a positive, though not statistically significant, relationship. I also examine the history of British colonialism. Through setting up specific system of indirect rule, British colonizers created conditions that contributed to intra-state conflict. Furthermore, through constructing a unique institutional system and maintaining ties to its former colonies, the British have created an atmosphere conducive to international political engagement after the onset of civil war. Yet, when the relationship between civil war presence and political globalization is tested, it is demonstrated that civil war presence actually increases political globalization. This relationship is further explained by controlling for the post-Cold War period, which gives civil war presence and British colonialism further significance in determining political globalization

Civil War and Globalization: The Effect of Colonialism on Political Globalization

The purpose of this paper to determine why civil war onset reduces political globalization in former British colonies. Through linear regression and logistic regression analyses, I test the affect of civil war onset and the presence of civil war on political globalization, controlling for former British colonies, French colonies, and other factors. More important, however, is the history behind British colonialism. Through setting up a unique institutional system and maintaining ties to its former colonies, the British have created an atmosphere conducive to international political engagement after the onset of civil war. This study shows that while civil war onset creates an immediate backlash in former British colonies, these same states actually increase their political globalization as the duration of conflict continues

Cyber Buddy is Better than No Buddy: A Test of the Köhler Motivation Effect in Exergames.

    Get PDF
Objective: Although exergames are popular, few people take advantage of the potential of group dynamics to motivate play (and achieve associated health bene?ts). One motivation gain phenomenon has shown promise for motivating greater effort in partnered exergames: The Koehler effect (working at a task with a more capable partner where one’s performance is indispensable to the group). This article examines whether a Koehler effect can be demonstrated in an exergame by exercising with a moderately superior humanoid, software-generated partner. Materials and Methods: Male and female (n = 120; mean age, 19.41 years) college students completed a series of plank exercises using ‘‘CyBuddy Exercise,’’ a program developed speci?cally for this study. In a lab in an academic building, participants completed the exercises individually and, after a rest, were randomly assigned to complete the same exercises again, but with a ‘‘live’’ human partner (HP) presented virtually, a nearlyhuman-like, humanoid partner (NHP), a hardly human-like, software-generated partner (HHP), or a no-partner control condition (IC), with equal numbers in each group (i.e., n = 30). Exercise persistence, perceived exertion, self-ef?cacy beliefs, enjoyment, and intentions to exercise were recorded and analyzed. Results: A 4X2 analysis of variance on the (Block 2 – Block 1) difference scores showed that a signi?cant Koehler motivation gain was observed in all partner conditions (compared with IC), but persistence was signi?cantly greater with HPs than with either NHP or HHP humanoid partners (P < 0.05). By the conclusion of the study, there were no signi?cant differences among the partnered conditions in perceived exertion, self-ef?cacy, enjoyment, or future intentions to exercise. Conclusions: These results suggest that a software-generated partner can elicit the Koehler motivation gain in exergames, but not as strongly as a partner who is thought to be human

Bibliotherapy is an applied reading dynamics which provides socialization, comfort, assistance for healthcare treatments and helps solving small problems of personal nature. Roughly, it is divided into developmental, performed by librarians, and clinical performed by psychologists. It can be applied in schools, nursing homes, hospitals, clinics, among other places. Is avails itself of fictional material that allows catharsis, identification with the characters present in the narrative, projection, introjections, and introspection. These are bibliotherapeutic components that, combined with humor, allow reading to configure itself as a therapy. The overall objective of the research was to analyze the bibliographic production on bibliotherapy in Brapci and Scielo database from 2000 to 2013.The specific objectives are: identifying the research output on bibliotherapy in those basis during the mentioned period; checking which articles are theoretical; checking which articles are experiences reports; registering the target audience of the activities; verifying the sites where the therapeutic activities take place. From the view point of goals, it is an exploratory research; from the point of view of the problemis approach it is qualiquantitative; from the technical procedures aspect, it is bibliographical. For the recovery of the articles, the key-word selected was: bibliotherapy, the therapeutic function of reading and reading as therapy. The study found that most articles on bibliotherapy in the period in question are in the ACB Journal; most theoretical articles published are about developmental bibliotherapy; the audience contemplated with activities are, in most cases, children and adults; the hospitalis the most recurrent site of such activities. It was concluded that bibliotherapy is a field of study in Information Science; the bilbiotherapeutic practice is an interdisciplinary activity; the output of literature on bibliotherapy has increased in recent years; librarianship lacks articles with larger theoretical reflections, since it indicates many experience reports

“BECAUSE WE HAVE CHOSEN A LIFE OF PEACE”: A QUANTITATIVE AND QUALITATIVE STUDY OF VEGAN FOOD NARRATIVES

Restaurants, grocery stores, fast food chains, and companies all over the United States introduce the consumer to more vegan products, dishes, and services than ever before. The rise of veganism therefore offers a rhetorical platform that should be studied. This dissertation discusses the rhetoric of veganism by analyzing food narratives of vegans through a critical intersectional lens and consists of three research stages. The first research stage investigates the narratology of Glenn Scott Lacey’s documentary, Vegan: Everyday Stories(2016). In particular, this rhetorical analysis focuses on the evaluative belief system of vegan storytelling by applying narrative and ideological criticism. The second research stage considers quantitative data collected from an online survey that combined questions on food and attitudes about social justice engagement. The results of a path analysis illustrate the multi-layered nature of veganism and what motivates vegans to challenge their food habits. The third and last research stage shares qualitative data derived from Skype interviews conducted with vegans who took the previously mentioned survey. These interviews offer qualitative data that illustrate how the shared value of knowledge/education plays a vital role in becoming vegan, and how an intersectional lens can, when employed critically, enrich veganism as a social justice movement through a storied activism. Finally, the project comments on how the studying of food narratives can refine the vegan movement since storied activism can lead to a better understanding of overlapping oppressions

Yours, Mine, & Ours utilizes found object assemblage, textiles, art multiples, and installation to present the theme of discovering personal identity through collecting, ownership, affiliations, cultural context, and transformation. This work presents to viewers a tactile experience to be investigated, touched, and transferred to their own lives. Centered on domesticity, the familiar and ordinary becomes transformed through labor-intensive processes into unique and personal works of art. Viewer participation, in all aspects of the making process, emphasizes the universal human experience of searching for comprehension of our culture. Each artwork is a metaphor for this search and how we are constantly altering our surroundings and ourselves to better understand our identity. The objective of this work is to inspire the viewer to re-examine what comprises their self-concept and to bring new awareness to what we may take for granted
