    Improving competitive ability and herbicide options in domesticated oat production systems (Avena sativa L.)

    Non-Peer ReviewedDomesticated oat (Avena sativa L.) is an economically important crop, ranking sixth in world cereal production and with production reaching approximately 25 million tonnes annually. It is largely utilized within the food industry and has increased in demand due to recent recognition of its health benefits attributed to beta-glucan. Oat yield reductions and poor grain seed quality have become more prevalent with increased resistant kochia populations. Multiple herbicide resistant (HR) kochia, along with a lack of herbicide registration for domesticated oat, have lead to a significant decrease in weed control efficacy. Thus, the initial objectives of this study are to quantify the efficacy of new herbicides for domesticated oat production. This project will be utilizing Group 2, 6, 14, and 28 PRE- and POST applicant herbicides. Oat yield and biomass was not significantly reduced within most treatments, indicating high crop tolerance. However, based on CWSS visual ratings, which were conducted after application indicated severe tissue damage and growth reductions attributed to several treatments. In contrast, fluthiacet-methyl, florasulam with bromoxynil, and pyrasulfotole with bromoxynil, and bentazon with 2,4-D could pose as alternative herbicide control options, as initial tissue damage was limited and provided reasonable kochia control. Future research is required to confirm efficacy of kochia control and oat tolerance, as apposing research indicates varying results

    ArgR is an essential local transcriptional regulator of the arcABC-operon in Streptococcus suis and crucial for biological fitness in acidic environment

    Streptococcus suis is one of the most important pathogens in pigs and can also cause severe infections in humans. Despite its clinical relevance very little is known about the factors contributing to its virulence. Recently, we identified a new putative virulence factor in Streptococcus suis, the arginine deiminase system (ADS), an arginine catabolic enzyme system encoded by the arcABC-operon, which enables Streptococcus suis to survive in acidic environment. In this study, we focused on ArgR, an ADS associated regulator belonging to the ArgR/AhrC arginine repressor family. Using an argR knock-out strain we could show that ArgR is essential for arcABC-operon expression and necessary for the biological fitness of Streptococcus suis. By cDNA expression microarray analyses and quantitative real time RT-PCR we found that the arcABC-operon is the only gene cluster regulated by ArgR, which is in contrast to many other bacteria. Reporter gene analysis with gfp under the control of the arcABC promoter demonstrated that ArgR is able to activate the arcABC promoter. Electrophoretic mobility shift assays with fragments of the arcABC promoter and recombinant ArgR, and chromatin immunoprecipitation with antibodies directed against ArgR revealed that ArgR interacts with the arcABC promoter in vitro and in vivo by binding to a region from -147 to 72 bp upstream of the transcriptional start point. Overall our results show that in Streptococcus suis ArgR is an essential, system specific transcriptional regulator of the ADS directly interacting with the arcABC promoter in vivo

    How Do Auditors Behave During Periods of Market Euphoria? The Case of Internet IPOs

    The study of periods of market euphoria, such as Holland’s seventeenth-century tulip mania, England’s eighteenth-century South Sea Company, America’s nineteenth-century railroads, or, most recently, the U.S. housing market, is a topic of long-standing interest to economists. Theorists specify conditions under which market participants and institutions cause "bubbles" to arise and persist and empiricists test participant-centric or institution- centric explanations (Hong, Scheinkman, and Xiong 2008; Schultz 2008; Greenwood and Nagel 2009). In this paper, we study a different participant other than one that stands to gain from price fluctuations. We are interested in how auditors behave during periods of market euphoria. Given their gatekeeper responsibility to act in the public’s interest, along with the seeming inevitability of bubbles (Rampell 2009), it is important to study how auditors behave during euphoric market conditions. To address this question, we examine auditor going-concern (GC) opinions around the time of the wave of stressed Internet firms filing to go public on NASDAQ, the capital markets entry point for the companies that went on to constitute "dotcom mania"

    Beam profile reflectometry: a new technique for thin film measurements

    In the manufacture of semiconductor devices, it is of critical importance to know the thickness and material properties of various dielectric and semiconducting thin films. Although there are many techniques for measuring these films, the most commonly used are reflection spectrophotometry [1,2] and ellipsometry [3]. In the former method, the normal- incidence reflectivity is measured as a function of wavelength. The shape of the reflectivity spectrum is then analyzed using the Fresnel equations to determine the thickness of the film. In some cases, the refractive index can also be determined provided that the dispersion of the optical constants are well known. The latter method consists of reflecting a beam of known polarization off the sample surface at an oblique angle. The film thickness, and in some cases the refractive index, can be determined from the change in polarization experienced upon reflection

    Surface acoustic waves in finite slabs of three-dimensional phononic crystals

    We study theoretically, by means of layer-multiple-scattering techniques, the propagation of elastic waves through finite slabs of phononic crystals consisting of metallic spheres in a polyester matrix, embedded in air. In particular, we focus on the study of modes localized on the surfaces of the structure. Their origin and behavior, as well as the physical parameters that influence and determine their appearance, are investigated in detail. Our results reveal the existence of absolute phononic frequency gaps in these finite structures, and point out the possibility, under an appropriate choice of the parameters, of tunable regions of frequency free of propagating and/or surface-localized modes. © 2008 The American Physical Society.Peer Reviewe

    Role of glucose and CcpA in capsule expression and virulence of Streptococcus suis

    Streptococcus suis is one of the most important pathogens in pigs and is also an emerging zoonotic agent. After crossing the epithelial barrier, S. suis causes bacteraemia, resulting in meningitis, endocarditis and bronchopneumonia. Since the host environment seems to be an important regulatory component for virulence, we related expression of virulence determinants of S. suis to glucose availability during growth and to the sugar metabolism regulator catabolite control protein A (CcpA). We found that expression of the virulence-associated genes arcB, representing arcABC operon expression, cps2A, representing capsular locus expression, as well as sly, ofs, sao and epf, differed significantly between exponential and early stationary growth of a highly virulent serotype 2 strain. Deletion of ccpA altered the expression of the surface-associated virulence factors arcB, sao and eno, as well as the two currently proven virulence factors in pigs, ofs and cps2A, in early exponential growth. Global expression analysis using a cDNA expression array revealed 259 differentially expressed genes in early exponential growth, of which 141 were more highly expressed in the CcpA mutant strain 10¿ccpA and 118 were expressed to a lower extent. Interestingly, among the latter genes, 18 could be related to capsule and cell wall synthesis. Correspondingly, electron microscopy characterization of strain 10¿ccpA revealed a markedly reduced thickness of the capsule. This phenotype correlated with enhanced binding to porcine plasma proteins and a reduced resistance to killing by porcine neutrophils. Taken together, our data demonstrate that CcpA has a significant effect on the capsule synthesis and virulence properties of S. suis

    Searching for Radio Pulsars in 3EG Sources at Urumqi Observatory

    Since mid-2005, a pulsar searching system has been operating at 18 cm on the 25-m radio telescope of Urumqi Observatory. Test observations on known pulsars show that the system can perform the intended task.     The complex TIE between macrophages and angiogenesis

    Macrophages are primarily known as phagocytic immune cells, but they also play a role in diverse processes, such as morphogenesis, homeostasis and regeneration. In this review, we discuss the influence of macrophages on angiogenesis, the process of new blood vessel formation from the pre-existing vasculature. Macrophages play crucial roles at each step of the angiogenic cascade, starting from new blood vessel sprouting to the remodelling of the vascular plexus and vessel maturation. Macrophages form promising targets for both pro- and anti-angiogenic treatments. However, to target macrophages, we will first need to understand the mechanisms that control the functional plasticity of macrophages during each of the steps of the angiogenic cascade. Here, we review recent insights in this topic. Special attention will be given to the TIE2-expressing macrophage (TEM), which is a subtype of highly angiogenic macrophages that is able to influence angiogenesis via the angiopoietin-TIE pathway
