Three Generations on the Quintic Quotient
A three-generation SU(5) GUT, that is 3x(10+5bar) and a single 5-5bar pair,
is constructed by compactification of the E_8 heterotic string. The base
manifold is the Z_5 x Z_5-quotient of the quintic, and the vector bundle is the
quotient of a positive monad. The group action on the monad and its
bundle-valued cohomology is discussed in detail, including topological
restrictions on the existence of equivariant structures. This model and a
single Z_5 quotient are the complete list of three generation quotients of
positive monads on the quintic.Comment: 19 pages, LaTeX. v2: section on anomaly cancellation adde
Double charmonium production at B-factories within light cone formalism
This paper is devoted to the study of the processes e^+e^- \to J/\Psi \eta_c,
J/\Psi \eta_c', \psi' \eta_c, \psi' \eta_c' within light cone formalism. It is
shown that if one disregards the contribution of higher fock states, the
twist-3 distribution amplitudes needed in the calculation can be unambiguously
determined from the twist-2 distribution amplitudes and equations of motion.
Using models of the twist-2 distribution amplitudes the cross sections of the
processes under study have been calculated. The results of the calculation are
in agreement with Belle and BaBar experiments. It is also shown that
relativistic and radiative corrections to the cross sections play crucial role
in the achievement of the agreement between the theory and experiments. The
comparison of the results of this paper with the results obtained in other
papers has been carried out. In particular, it is shown that the results of
papers where relativistic and radiative corrections were calculated within
NRQCD are overestimated by a factor of ~1.5.Comment: 14 pages, 1 figur
Modeling the Void H I Column Density Spectrum
The equivalent width distribution function (EWDF) of \hone absorbers specific
to the void environment has been recently derived (Manning 2002), revealing a
large line density of clouds (dN/dz ~500 per unit z for Log (N_HI)> 12.4). I
show that the void absorbers cannot be diffuse (or so-called filamentary)
clouds, expanding with the Hubble flow, as suggested by N-body/hydro
simulations. Absorbers are here modeled as the baryonic remnants of
sub-galactic perturbations that have expanded away from their dark halos in
response to reionization at z ~ 6.5. A 1-D Lagrangian hydro/gravity code is
used to follow the dynamic evolution and ionization structure of the baryonic
clouds for a range of halo circular velocities. The simulation products at z=0
can be combined according to various models of the halo velocity distribution
function to form a column density spectrum that can be compared with the
observed. I find that such clouds may explain the observed EWDF if the halo
velocity distribution function is as steep as that advanced by Klypin (1999),
and the halo mass distribution is closer to isothermal than to NFW.Comment: 21 pages, 15 figures. Paper in press; ApJ 591, n
Yukawa Textures From Heterotic Stability Walls
A holomorphic vector bundle on a Calabi-Yau threefold, X, with h^{1,1}(X)>1
can have regions of its Kahler cone where it is slope-stable, that is, where
the four-dimensional theory is N=1 supersymmetric, bounded by "walls of
stability". On these walls the bundle becomes poly-stable, decomposing into a
direct sum, and the low energy gauge group is enhanced by at least one
anomalous U(1) gauge factor. In this paper, we show that these additional
symmetries can strongly constrain the superpotential in the stable region,
leading to non-trivial textures of Yukawa interactions and restrictions on
allowed masses for vector-like pairs of matter multiplets. The Yukawa textures
exhibit a hierarchy; large couplings arise on the stability wall and some
suppressed interactions "grow back" off the wall, where the extended U(1)
symmetries are spontaneously broken. A number of explicit examples are
presented involving both one and two stability walls, with different
decompositions of the bundle structure group. A three family standard-like
model with no vector-like pairs is given as an example of a class of SU(4)
bundles that has a naturally heavy third quark/lepton family. Finally, we
present the complete set of Yukawa textures that can arise for any holomorphic
bundle with one stability wall where the structure group breaks into two
factors.Comment: 53 pages, 4 figures and 13 table
QSO Absorption Line Constraints on Intragroup High-Velocity Clouds
We show that the number statistics of moderate redshift MgII and Lyman limit
absorbers may rule out the hypothesis that high velocity clouds are infalling
intragroup material.Comment: 4 pages, no figures; submitted to Astrophysical Journal Letters;

The dryout region in frictionally heated sliding contacts
Some conditions under which boiling and two-phase flow can occur in or near a wet sliding contact are determined and illustrated. The experimental apparatus consisted of a tool pressed against an instrumented slider plate and motion picture sequences at 4000 frames/sec. The temperature and photographic data demonstrated surface conditions of boiling, drying, trapped gas evolution (solutions), and volatility of fluid mixture components. The theoretical modeling and analysis are in reasonable agreement with experimental data
Dynamical transitions in correlated driven diffusion in a periodic potential
The diffusion of a two-dimensional array of particles driven by a constant
force in the presence of a periodic external potential exhibits a hierarchy of
dynamical phase transitions when the driving force is varied. This behavior can
be explained by a simple phenomenological approach which reduces the system of
strongly interacting particles to weakly interacting quasi-particles (kinks).
The richness of the strongly coupled system is however not lost because,
contrary to a single-Brownian particle, the array shows an hysteretic behavior
even at non-zero temperature. The present investigation can be viewed as a
first step toward understanding nanotribology.Comment: 4 pages, 3 pictures, revtex to appear in Phys Rev. Let
The chemical equilibration volume: measuring the degree of thermalization
We address the issue of the degree of equilibrium achieved in a high energy
heavy-ion collision. Specifically, we explore the consequences of incomplete
strangeness chemical equilibrium. This is achieved over a volume V of the order
of the strangeness correlation length and is assumed to be smaller than the
freeze-out volume. Probability distributions of strange hadrons emanating from
the system are computed for varying sizes of V and simple experimental
observables based on these are proposed. Measurements of such observables may
be used to estimate V and as a result the degree of strangeness chemical
equilibration achieved. This sets a lower bound on the degree of kinetic
equilibrium. We also point out that a determination of two-body correlations or
second moments of the distributions are not sufficient for this estimation.Comment: 16 pages, 15 figures, revtex
Weaving Lighthouses and Stitching Stories: Blind and Visually Impaired People Designing E-textiles
We describe our experience of working with blind and visually impaired people to create interactive art objects that are personal to them, through a participatory making process using electronic textiles (e-textiles) and hands-on crafting techniques. The research addresses both the practical considerations about how to structure hands-on making workshops in a way which is accessible to participants of varying experience and abilities, and how effective the approach was in enabling participants to tell their own stories and feel in control of the design and making process. The results of our analysis is the offering of insights in how to run e-textile making sessions in such a way for them to be more accessible and inclusive to a wider community of participants
Kink-antikink vortex transfer in periodic-plus-random pinning potential: Theoretical analysis and numerical experiments
The influence of random pinning on the vortex dynamics in a periodic square
potential under an external drive is investigated. Using theoretical approach
and numerical experiments, we found several dynamical phases of vortex motion
that are different from the ones for a regular pinning potential. Vortex
transfer is controlled by kinks and antikinks, which either preexist in the
system or appear spontaneously in pairs and then propagate in groups. When
kinks and antikinks collide, they annihilate.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
