    Mundo Hispánico versus Life: “Spanish Village” by W. Eugene Smith and the Debate over Spain in Illustrated Magazines (1949-1952)

    Around 1950 there was an intense debate about U.S. aid to Francoist Spain. American magazines such as Look and Life devoted attention to the Spanish issue, and used photo essays to visually argue their positions. This article seeks to examine how this controversy was created through these photo essays that appeared in American magazines, the reaction of the Spanish public, and the response to American critics by magazines such as Mundo Hispánico and Semana. These cases demonstrate how part of the debate was also an image campaign structured around photo essays published in said illustrated magazines.Alrededor de 1950 se produjo un intenso debate sobre la ayuda de EE.UU. a la España franquista.     The most beautiful painting in the world: the process as a narrative in Tapies

    The work of the artist Antoni Tapies (1923-2012) has been widely studied from different disciplines, including his analytical and syncretic vision. This article tries to analyze one of its aesthetic keys: in particular, the conceptualization of its idea process, using the synthesis that appears in the graphic story The Most Beautiful Panting in the World published by Ralph Herrmanns in 1970, in which Tapies is represented as a character-artist. The friendship that emerges between Tapies and Herrmanns allows the creative freedom of the latter, who, as an exceptional interpreter, is capable of capturing Tapies' thought in the tale. The study of this graphic story also allows us to advance in the study of some educational variables that can intervene in the teaching-learning processes of the arts, such as the artist's relationship with the educational intention that appears as a moral in the story-tale. In this moral of a fable, as a conclusion or educational synthesis, Tapies tries to express his aesthetic thinking about the creative process, represented in his artistic work.La obra del artista Antoni Tàpies (1923-2012) ha sido ampliamente estudiada desde diferentes disciplinas, incluida su visión analítica y sincrética. Este artículo trata de analizar una de sus claves estéticas: en concreto, la conceptualización de su idea de proceso, utilizando la síntesis que aparece en el cuento gráfico El cudro más bonito del mundo publicado por Ralph Herrmanns en 1970, en el que el propio Tàpies aparece representado como personaje-artista. La amistad que surge entre Tàpies y Herrmanns permite la libertad creativa de este último, quien, con carácter de intérprete excepcional, es capaz de plasmar el pensamiento de Tàpies en el cuento. El estudio de este relato gráfico permite además avanzar en el conocimiento de algunas variables educativas que pueden intervenir en los procesos de enseñanza-aprendizaje de las artes, como la relación del artista con la intención educativa que aparece a modo de moraleja en dicho relato-cuento.     Aminoiron(III)–porphyrin–alumina catalyst obtained by non-hydrolytic sol-gel process for heterogeneous oxidation of hydrocarbons

    An aminoiron(III) porphyrin immobilized on an alumina matrix was prepared and used as catalyst for the oxidation of organic substrates. Powder alumina had been prepared by a non-hydrolytic sol-gel method through condensation of aluminum chloride with anhydrous ethanol. Then, iron(III) [5,10,15,20-tetrakis(2,6-dichloro-3-aminophenyl)-porphyrin] was immobilized on the alumina powder under magnetic stirring, reflux, and inert atmosphere. Ultraviolet–visible and infrared spectroscopies, powder X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and thermal analysis were applied for characterizing the resulting material, confirming that the ironporphyrin was immobilized on the alumina support. The catalytic activity of ironporphyrin/alumina was evaluated in the oxidation of (Z)-cyclooctene and cyclohexane and in the Baeyer-Villiger oxidation of cyclohexanone using iodosylbenzene or hydrogen peroxide as oxygen donors. The novel immobilized catalyst proved to be a promising system for the efficient and selective oxidation of the organic substrates with 85–92% selectivity to the epoxide in the oxidation of alkenes and 25–41% to the ketone in the oxidation of cyclohexane. As for the Baeyer-Villiger oxidation of cyclohexanone, good conversion to ԑ-caprolactone was observed as well.     Stratification of the severity of critically ill patients with classification trees

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Development of three classification trees (CT) based on the CART (<it>Classification and Regression Trees</it>), CHAID (<it>Chi-Square Automatic Interaction Detection</it>) and C4.5 methodologies for the calculation of probability of hospital mortality; the comparison of the results with the APACHE II, SAPS II and MPM II-24 scores, and with a model based on multiple logistic regression (LR).</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Retrospective study of 2864 patients. Random partition (70:30) into a Development Set (DS) n = 1808 and Validation Set (VS) n = 808. Their properties of discrimination are compared with the ROC curve (AUC CI 95%), Percent of correct classification (PCC CI 95%); and the calibration with the Calibration Curve and the Standardized Mortality Ratio (SMR CI 95%).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>CTs are produced with a different selection of variables and decision rules: CART (5 variables and 8 decision rules), CHAID (7 variables and 15 rules) and C4.5 (6 variables and 10 rules). The common variables were: inotropic therapy, Glasgow, age, (A-a)O2 gradient and antecedent of chronic illness. In VS: all the models achieved acceptable discrimination with AUC above 0.7. CT: CART (0.75(0.71-0.81)), CHAID (0.76(0.72-0.79)) and C4.5 (0.76(0.73-0.80)). PCC: CART (72(69-75)), CHAID (72(69-75)) and C4.5 (76(73-79)). Calibration (SMR) better in the CT: CART (1.04(0.95-1.31)), CHAID (1.06(0.97-1.15) and C4.5 (1.08(0.98-1.16)).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>With different methodologies of CTs, trees are generated with different selection of variables and decision rules. The CTs are easy to interpret, and they stratify the risk of hospital mortality. The CTs should be taken into account for the classification of the prognosis of critically ill patients.</p

    Effect of chemical modification of palygorskite and sepiolite by 3-aminopropyltriethoxisilane on adsorption of cationic and anionic dyes

    [EN]A study has been performed on the removal of representative cationic and anionic dyes, methylene blue and metanil yellow, from aqueous solutions using fibrous clay minerals grafted with amine groups using (3- aminopropyl)triethoxysilane as functionalizing agent. Parameters affecting dye uptake, including contact time and dye concentration, the desorption process, pH and the recovery of both the dyes and the adsorbents, were evaluated. The adsorption capacities were 49.48 and 47.03 mg/g for grafted palygorskite and 60.00 and 59.78 mg/g for grafted sepiolite, for methylene blue and metanil yellow dyes, respectively. Adsorption of the anionic dye was enhanced by the grafting process. Grafted clay mineral adsorbents proved to be efficient to remove the contaminants from a real wastewater from textile industry within 30 min. Both adsorbents showed good reusability and the maximum adsorption capacity was maintained stable after a 2-cycle test. Thus, hybrid adsorbents based on fibrous clay minerals can efficiently be applied in adsorption/desorption cycles for removal of dye

    Heart disease characterization and myocardial strain analysis in patients with PACS1 Neurodevelopmental Disorder

    Background: PACS1 neurodevelopmental disorder (PACS1-NDD) (MIM# 615009) is a rare autosomal dominant disease characterized by neurodevelopmental delay, dysmorphic facial features, and congenital malformations. Heart disease (HD) is frequently present in individuals with PACS1-NDD, but a compressive review of these anomalies and an evaluation of cardiac function in a cohort of patients are lacking. Methods: (i) Cardiac evaluation in 11 PACS1-NDD patients was conducted using conventional echocardiography. (ii) Heart function was assessed by tissue Doppler imaging, and two-dimensional speckle tracking was performed in seven patients and matched controls. (iii) This systematic review focused on determining HD prevalence in individuals with PACS1-NDD. Results: In our cohort, 7 of 11 patients presented HD. (Among them, three cases of ascending aortic dilatation (AAD) were detected and one mitral valve prolapse (MVP).) None of the patients showed echocardiographic pathological values, and the left global longitudinal strain was not significantly different between patients and controls (patients −24.26 ± 5.89% vs. controls −20.19 ± 1.75%, p = 0.3176). In the literature review, almost 42% (42/100) of individuals with PACS1-NDD reportedly experienced HD. Septal defects were the most common malformation, followed by patent ductus arteriosus. Conclusions: Our results show a high prevalence of HD in PACS1-NDD patients; in this way, AAD and MVP are reported for the first time in this syndrome. Furthermore, a detailed cardiac function evaluation in our cohort did not reveal evidence of cardiac dysfunction in individuals with PACS1-NDD. Cardiology evaluation should be included for all individuals with Schuurs-Hoeijmakers syndrome

    High rate of autonomic neuropathy in Cornelia de Lange Syndrome

    Background: Cornelia de Lange Syndrome (CdLS) is a rare congenital disorder characterized by typical facial features, growth failure, limb abnormalities, and gastroesophageal dysfunction that may be caused by mutations in several genes that disrupt gene regulation early in development. Symptoms in individuals with CdLS suggest that the peripheral nervous system (PNS) is involved, yet there is little direct evidence. Method: Somatic nervous system was evaluated by conventional motor and sensory nerve conduction studies and autonomic nervous system by heart rate variability, sympathetic skin response and sudomotor testing. CdLS Clinical Score and genetic studies were also obtained. Results: Sympathetic skin response and sudomotor test were pathological in 35% and 34% of the individuals with CdLS, respectively. Nevertheless, normal values in large fiber nerve function studies. Conclusions: Autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysfunction is found in many individuals with Cornelia de Lange Syndrome, and could be related to premature aging

    Evaluating Face2Gene as a Tool to Identify Cornelia de Lange Syndrome by Facial Phenotypes

    Characteristic or classic phenotype of Cornelia de Lange syndrome (CdLS) is associated with a recognisable facial pattern. However, the heterogeneity in causal genes and the presence of overlapping syndromes have made it increasingly difficult to diagnose only by clinical features. DeepGestalt technology, and its app Face2Gene, is having a growing impact on the diagnosis and management of genetic diseases by analysing the features of affected individuals. Here, we performed a phenotypic study on a cohort of 49 individuals harbouring causative variants in known CdLS genes in order to evaluate Face2Gene utility and sensitivity in the clinical diagnosis of CdLS. Based on the profile images of patients, a diagnosis of CdLS was within the top five predicted syndromes for 97.9% of our cases and even listed as first prediction for 83.7%. The age of patients did not seem to affect the prediction accuracy, whereas our results indicate a correlation between the clinical score and affected genes. Furthermore, each gene presents a different pattern recognition that may be used to develop new neural networks with the goal of separating different genetic subtypes in CdLS. Overall, we conclude that computer-assisted image analysis based on deep learning could support the clinical diagnosis of CdL

    A Novel Intragenic Duplication in the HDAC8 Gene Underlying a Case of Cornelia de Lange Syndrome

    Cornelia de Lange syndrome (CdLS) is a multisystemic genetic disorder characterized by distinctive facial features, growth retardation, and intellectual disability, as well as various systemic conditions. It is caused by genetic variants in genes related to the cohesin complex. Single-nucleotide variations are the best-known genetic cause of CdLS; however, copy number variants (CNVs) clearly underlie a substantial proportion of cases of the syndrome. The NIPBL gene was thought to be the locus within which clinically relevant CNVs contributed to CdLS. However, in the last few years, pathogenic CNVs have been identified in other genes such as HDAC8, RAD21, and SMC1A. Here, we studied an affected girl presenting with a classic CdLS phenotype heterozygous for a de novo ~32 kbp intragenic duplication affecting exon 10 of HDAC8. Molecular analyses revealed an alteration in the physiological splicing that included a 96 bp insertion between exons 9 and 10 of the main transcript of HDAC8. The aberrant transcript was predicted to generate a truncated protein whose accessibility to the active center was restricted, showing reduced ease of substrate entry into the mutated enzyme. Lastly, we conclude that the duplication is responsible for the patient’s phenotype, highlighting the contribution of CNVs as a molecular cause underlying CdLS
