    Solvation of excess electrons in supercritical ammonia along the T = 450 K isotherm was investigated. Equilibrium aspects of solvation were analyzed using combined path integral-molecular dynamics techniques.     Effect of Age and Lordotic Angle on the Level of Lumbar Disc Herniation

    It has been previously suggested in the literature that with aging, degenerative changes as well as disc herniation start at the lower lumbar segments, with higher disc involvement observed in an ascending fashion in older age groups. We conducted a study to investigate this correlation between age and level of disc herniation, and to associate it with the magnitude of the Lumbar Lordotic Angle (LLA), as measured by Cobb's method. We followed retrospectively lumbosacral spine MRI's of 1419 patients with symptomatic disc herniation. Pearson's correlation was used in order to investigate the relationship between LLA, age, and level of disc herniation. Student's t-test was applied to assess gender differences. Young patients were found to have higher LLA (R = 0.44, P < 0.0001) and lower levels of disc herniation (R = 0.302, P < 0.0001), whereas older patients had higher level herniation in lower LLA group (mean LLA 28.6° and 25.4°) and lower level herniation in high LLA group (mean LLA 33.2°). We concluded that Lumbar lordotic Cobb's angle and age can be predictors of the level of lumbar disc herniation. This did not differ among men and women (R = 0.341, P < 0.0001)

    The interaction between xylan and cellulose microfibrils is important for secondary cell wall properties in vascular plants; however, the molecular arrangement of xylan in the cell wall and the nature of the molecular bonding between the polysaccharides are unknown. In dicots, the xylan backbone of β-(1,4)-linked xylosyl residues is decorated by occasional glucuronic acid, and approximately one-half of the xylosyl residues are O-acetylated at C-2 or C-3. We recently proposed that the even, periodic spacing of GlcA residues in the major domain of dicot xylan might allow the xylan backbone to fold as a twofold helical screw to facilitate alignment along, and stable interaction with, cellulose fibrils; however, such an interaction might be adversely impacted by random acetylation of the xylan backbone. Here, we investigated the arrangement of acetyl residues in Arabidopsis xylan using mass spectrometry and NMR. Alternate xylosyl residues along the backbone are acetylated. Using molecular dynamics simulation, we found that a twofold helical screw conformation of xylan is stable in interactions with both hydrophilic and hydrophobic cellulose faces. Tight docking of xylan on the hydrophilic faces is feasible only for xylan decorated on alternate residues and folded as a twofold helical screw. The findings suggest an explanation for the importance of acetylation for xylan-cellulose interactions, and also have implications for our understanding of cell wall molecular architecture and properties, and biological degradation by pathogens and fungi.     Potato response to potassium application rates and timing under semi-arid conditions

    A two-year experiment (2004-2005) was conducted at Tal Amara Research Station in the Bekaa Valley of Lebanon to evaluate the influence of progressive application of K rates and application timing on yield, yield components and tuber quality of potato (Solanum tuberosum L. cv. Agria). Four levels of potassium (0 (K0), 75 (K75), 150 (K150), and 225 (K225) kg K2O ha-1) and two application timings (tuber initiation and tuber bulking stages) were used in a split-plot design. The progressive application of potassium fertilizer from 0 to 225 kg K2O ha-1 significantly affected the yield and yield components of potato. In both years, small grade tubers and aggregate tuber yield increased quadratically with increasing K application rates up to 150 kg K2O ha-1, reaching a plateau thereafter, showing luxury consumption of the nutrient at 225 kg K2O ha-1. In 2004 when averaged over K application rates, large and medium grade tubers and aggregated tuber yield were 120%, 22%, and 12% greater, respectively, with K application at tuber bulking than at tuber initiation. A similar trend was also observed in 2005, when the small grade tubers and aggregate tuber yield were 20% and 12% higher, respectively, with K application at tuber bulking than at tuber initiation stage. Finally, no significant difference among treatments was observed for tuber dry matter (avg. 19.8%) and specific gravity (1.08 g cm-3)

    On the Power and Limitations of Affine Policies in Two-Stage Adaptive Optimization

    We consider a two-stage adaptive linear optimization problem under right hand side uncertainty with a min–max objective and give a sharp characterization of the power and limitations of affine policies (where the second stage solution is an affine function of the right hand side uncertainty). In particular, we show that the worst-case cost of an optimal affine policy can be Omega(m12−) times the worst-case cost of an optimal fully-adaptable solution for any delta > 0, where m is the number of linear constraints. We also show that the worst-case cost of the best affine policy is O(m) times the optimal cost when the first-stage constraint matrix has non-negative coefficients. Moreover, if there are only k ≤ m uncertain parameters, we generalize the performance bound for affine policies to O(k) , which is particularly useful if only a few parameters are uncertain. We also provide an O(k) -approximation algorithm for the general case without any restriction on the constraint matrix but the solution is not an affine function of the uncertain parameters. We also give a tight characterization of the conditions under which an affine policy is optimal for the above model. In particular, we show that if the uncertainty set, R+m is a simplex, then an affine policy is optimal. However, an affine policy is suboptimal even if is a convex combination of only (m + 3) extreme points (only two more extreme points than a simplex) and the worst-case cost of an optimal affine policy can be a factor (2 − delta) worse than the worst-case cost of an optimal fully-adaptable solution for any delta > 0.National Science Foundation (U.S.) (NSF Grants DMI-0556106)National Science Foundation (U.S.) (EFRI-0735905

    Electrical stimulation devices for the prevention of venous thromboembolism: Preliminary studies of physiological efficacy and user satisfaction.

    Introduction: Electrical stimulation could provide an alternative method for preventing venous thromboembolism in stroke patients. The purpose of this preliminary study was to explore the effects of electrical stimulation and intermittent pneumatic compression on enhancing lower limb venous return in healthy and chronic stroke patients and also to evaluate patient and nurse satisfaction. Methods: We investigated the effectiveness of two electrical stimulation devices: Geko (Firstkind Ltd, High Wycombe, UK) and Orthopaedic Microstim 2V2 (Odstock Medical Ltd, Salisbury, UK); and one intermittent pneumatic compression device: Huntleigh Flowstron Universal (Huntleigh Healthcare Ltd, Cardiff, UK). We recruited 12 healthy and 5 chronic stroke participants. The devices were fitted sequentially, and Doppler ultrasound measurements were taken. Eight patients and nurses were also recruited for a separate usability evaluation. Results: The electrical stimulation devices emulated the blood flow characteristics of intermittent pneumatic compression in both healthy and stroke participants provided that the intensity of electrical stimulation was sufficient. Patients and nurses also felt that the electrical stimulation devices were acceptable. Conclusions: Electrical stimulation may offer benefit as an alternative method for venous thromboembolism prevention in stroke patients. The apparent benefit is sufficient to warrant further investigation in a full powered randomised controlled trial

    ARES. III. Unveiling the Two Faces of KELT-7 b with HST WFC3*

    We present the analysis of the hot-Jupiter KELT-7 b using transmission and emission spectroscopy from the Hubble Space Telescope, both taken with the Wide Field Camera 3. Our study uncovers a rich transmission spectrum that is consistent with a cloud-free atmosphere and suggests the presence of H_{2}O and H^{−}. In contrast, the extracted emission spectrum does not contain strong absorption features and, although it is not consistent with a simple blackbody, it can be explained by a varying temperature–pressure profile, collision induced absorption, and H^{-}. KELT-7 b had also been studied with other space-based instruments and we explore the effects of introducing these additional data sets. Further observations with Hubble, or the next generation of space-based telescopes, are needed to allow for the optical opacity source in transmission to be confirmed and for molecular features to be disentangled in emission

    Partial integration and local mean-field approach for a vector lattice model of microemulsions

    A vector model on the simple cubic lattice, describing a mixture of water, oil, and amphiphile, is considered. An integration over the amphiphile orientational degrees of freedom is performed exactly in order to obtain an effective Hamiltonian for the system. The resulting model is a three-state (spin-1) system and contains many-site interaction terms. The analysis of the ground state reveals the presence of the water-oil-rich phase as well as the amphiphile-rich and the cubic phases. The temperature phase diagram of the system is analyzed in a local mean-field approach, and a triple line of water-rich, oil-rich, and microemulsion coexistence is obtained. For some values of the model parameters, lamellar phases also appear in the system, but only at finite temperature. The Lifshitz line is determined in a semianalytical way in order to locate the microemulsion region of the disordered phase
