Urban grasslands support threatened water voles
Urbanisation is often linked with habitat loss and a reduction in species richness but some species may be able to adapt to urban environments. Water voles Arvicola amphibius, a rapidly declining species in the UK, have recently been recorded in isolated grassland habitats in Glasgow, Scotland’s largest city (human population 1.2 million). The aim of this study was to determine the distribution and habitat characteristics of water vole populations occupying these dry grasslands. Field work was undertaken from March to October 2014 in a 34 km2 study area located 3 km east of the city centre. Field sign transects recorded water vole presence in 21/65 (32%) and 19/62 (31%) surveyed sites in spring and autumn, respectively. Vole occupancy increased with distance from water and was greatest in parkland, followed by sites with rank vegetation and roadside habitats. Occupancy was lower where signs of predators were recorded but surprisingly occupancy was found to be greater in the most disturbed sites, perhaps linked to the fact that many of these sites were public parks containing suitable grassland. Sites occupied by water voles were classed as neutral grasslands with species composition dominated by two main species. The number of grassland sites occupied by water voles, especially within public areas suggests that careful management of these urban grassland habitats will benefit the conservation of this highly threatened species in the UK
Why Do Institutional Plan Sponsors Hire and Fire their Investment Managers?
This paper examines the investment allocation decisions of pension plans, endowments, foundations, and other
institutional plan sponsors. The experience and education of plan sponsors and the environment (both regulatory
and agency) of the institutional market suggests that institutional investors rely less on past performance and use
diffe rent criteria when evaluating performance compared to mutual fund investors. Institutional investors are
expected to be less concerned with total returns and more considerate of benchmark-adjusted excess returns, and the
consistency with which they are delivered, over longer time horizons. An examination of asset and account flows
for actively-managed U.S. equity products is largely consistent with these expectations. The consistency with which
managers deliver positive or negative active returns relative to the S&P500 over multiple horizons, without regard to
the magnitude of these returns, plays a key role in determining the flow of assets among investment products. Style
benchmarks play a larger role in determining account movements, which is found to employ more criteria than asset
moves. However, total return is also considered, as the magnitudes of a one-year loss and 3 and 5-year total returns
are found to be incremental factors in plan sponsors’ allocation decisions. One explanation for this result is the
principal-agent arrangement faced by plan sponsors. Although the sponsors may be more sophisticated than the
typical retail investor, their clients, investors and the investment board, may not be. Plan sponsors may minimize
job risk by hiring and firing managers based on excess returns with incremental allocations based on total returns,
thereby satisfying both their mandate and their clients. It is also found that smaller and older products capture

Evaluating the responsiveness of the Warwick Edinburgh Mental Well-Being Scale (WEMWBS) : group and individual level analysis
Background:
Mental well-being now features prominently in UK and international health policy. However, progress has been hampered by lack of valid measures that are responsive to change. The objective of this study was to evaluate the responsiveness of the Warwick Edinburgh Mental Well-being Scale (WEMWBS) at both the individual and group level.
Methods:
Secondary analysis of twelve different interventional studies undertaken in different populations using WEMWBS as an outcome measure. Standardised response mean (SRM), probability of change statistic (P̂) and standard error of measurement (SEM) were used to evaluate whether WEMWBS detected statistically important changes at the group and individual level, respectively.
Results:
Mean change in WEMWBS score ranged from −0.6 to 10.6. SRM ranged from −0.10 (95% CI: -0.35, 0.15) to 1.35 (95% CI: 1.06, 1.64). In 9/12 studies the lower limit of the 95% CI for P̂ was greater than 0.5, denoting responsiveness. SEM ranged from 2.4 to 3.1 units, and at the threshold 2.77 SEM, WEMWBS detected important improvement in at least 12.8% to 45.7% of participants (lower limit of 95% CI>5.0%).
Conclusions:
WEMWBS is responsive to changes occurring in a wide range of mental health interventions undertaken in different populations. It offers a secure base for research and development in this rapidly evolving field. Further research using external criteria of change is warranted
Decision support for Foodbank South Africa
This paper employs a combined 'soft-hard' OR approach to aid decision making in the area of allocation at a not-for-profit organization, Foodbank South Africa (FBSA), that represents the largest hunger-relief network in South Africa. Two problem-structuring tools, causal mapping and root definitions (RDs) are utilized. Causal mapping is used to identify areas for useful research within FBSA, and gain a greater understanding of the organization in terms of its goals and consequently a good appreciation of the context in which decisions are made. Root definitions are employed to acquire a better understanding of the 'decision-issues' within the allocation system at the Cape Town warehouse. A simulation model is developed to imitate daily allocation decisions, with the end-objective of assisting decision-making by developing a range of allocation policies. A decision support system (DSS) is developed to help FBSA manage their agency database, automate some of the daily allocation decisions and simulate allocation policies
An Empirical Evaluation of Statistical Matching Methodologies
Using known data, the methodologies available for microdata file merging are compared. Results indicate that various techniques work or do not work in specific circumstances. An optimal-constrined merge model with an absolute difference distance function provide the best results
