    First Glimpses at Higgs' face

    The 8 TeV LHC Higgs search data just released indicates the existence of a scalar resonance with mass ~ 125 GeV. We examine the implications of the data reported by ATLAS, CMS and the Tevatron collaborations on understanding the properties of this scalar by performing joint fits on its couplings to other Standard Model particles. We discuss and characterize to what degree this resonance has the properties of the Standard Model (SM) Higgs, and consider what implications can be extracted for New Physics in a (mostly) model-independent fashion. We find that, if the Higgs couplings to fermions and weak vector bosons are allowed to differ from their standard values, the SM is ~ 2 sigma from the best fit point to current data. Fitting to a possible invisible decay branching ratio, we find BR_{inv} = 0.05\pm 0.32\ (95% C.L.) We also discuss and develop some ways of using the data in order to bound or rule out models which modify significantly the properties of this scalar resonance and apply these techniques to the global current data set.Comment: 26 pages, 7 figures, v2 post ICHEP data updat

Dept of Veterinary Physiology and Pharmacology Texas A&M University, College Station, TX 77843 We tested the hypothesis that impaired nitric oxide (NO)-mediated, endothelium-dependent dilation in aged soleus muscle feed arteries (SFA) is due to an age-related decrement in PI3-kinase(PI3K)/protein kinase B (Akt)-dependent phosphorylation of endothelial NO synthase (eNOS) on serine residue 1177 (p-eNOSser1177). SFA from young (4 mo) and old (24 mo) Fischer 344 rats were cannulated for examination of endothelium-dependent vasodilator responses to acetylcholine (ACh). To determine the mechanism by which aging affected vasodilation to ACh, vasodilator responses were assessed in the absence and presence of Nw-nitro-L-arginine (L-NNA, to inhibit NOS), LY-294002 (to inhibit PI3K), or 1L6-hydroxymethyl-chiro-inositol-2-(R)-2-O-methyl-3-O-octadecyl-sn-glycerocarbonate (AktI, to inhibit Akt). Results indicate that ACh-induced vasodilation was significantly blunted in old SFA, whereas dilation to sodium nitroprusside (a NO donor) was not compromised. The age-group difference in ACh-induced dilation was abolished in the presence of L-NNA, LY-294002, or AktI. In a separate set of experiments, ACh-induced vasodilation was assessed in SFA from young and old rats. SFA were subsequently removed from the pipettes, snap frozen, and immunoblot analysis was used to assess p-AktSer473, p-eNOSser1177, total Akt and total eNOS protein content. ACh-induced vasodilation was blunted in old SFA; however, the p-AktSer473/Akt and p-eNOSser1177/eNOS ratios were similar in young and old SFA. Collectively, these results indicate that NO-mediated dilation is impaired in old SFA; however, the decrement in endothelial function is not due to reduced PI3K/Akt-dependent phosphorylation of eNOS on serine residue 1177

    Comparison of antimicrobial resistance phenotypes and genotypes in enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli isolated from Australian and Vietnamese pigs

    This study aimed to compare the antibiogram phenotype and carriage of antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) of 97 porcine multidrug-resistant (MDR) enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) isolates obtained from Vietnam and 117 porcine MDR-ETEC obtained from Australia, two countries with different antimicrobial regulation systems. An antimicrobial resistance index (ARI) was calculated to quantify their potential significance to public health. Both Vietnamese and Australian isolates had moderate to high levels of resistance to commonly used antibiotics (ampicillin, tetracycline and sulphonamides). None of the Australian isolates were resistant to fluoroquinolones or third-generation cephalosporins and none possessed associated plasmid-mediated ARGs. However, 23.1% of Australian isolates were resistant to gentamicin owing to ARGs associated with apramycin or neomycin resistance [e.g. aac(3)-IV] that impart cross-resistance to gentamicin. Whilst Vietnamese isolates carried aminoglycoside ARGs, 44.4% of commercial pig isolates were resistant to gentamicin in comparison with 0% of village pig isolates. The plasmid-mediated fluoroquinolone ARG qnrB was commonly detected in Vietnamese isolates (52.3% commercial, 44.1% village), but phenotypic resistance was low (3.2% and 11.8%, respectively). The mean ARI for Vietnamese isolates (26.0) was significantly different (P < 0.001) from the mean ARI for Australian isolates (19.8), primarily reflecting fluoroquinolone resistance in the former collection. This comparison suggests the effectiveness of regulations that slow the dissemination of 'critical' resistance by restricting the availability of important classes of antimicrobials

    Application of the Frobenius method to the Schrodinger equation for a spherically symmetric potential: anharmonic oscillator

    The power series method has been adapted to compute the spectrum of the Schrodinger equation for central potential of the form V(r)=d2r2+d1r+i=0diriV(r)={d_{-2}\over r^2}+{d_{-1}\over r}+\sum_{i=0}^{\infty} d_{i}r^i. The bound-state energies are given as zeros of a calculable function, if the potential is confined in a spherical box. For an unconfined potential the interval bounding the energy eigenvalues can be determined in a similar way with an arbitrarily chosen precision.     Antimicrobial resistance in coagulase-positive staphylococci isolated from companion animals in Australia: a one year study

    Published: April 21, 2017Methicillin-resistant coagulase-positive staphylococci (CoPS) have become increasingly recognised as opportunistic pathogens that limit therapeutic options in companion animals. The frequency of methicillin resistance amongst clinical isolates on an Australia-wide level is unknown. This study determined antimicrobial susceptibility patterns for CoPS isolated from clinical infections in companion animals (dogs, cats and horses) as part of the first nation-wide survey on antimicrobial resistance in animal pathogens in Australia for a one-year period (January 2013 to January 2014). Clinical Staphylococcus spp. isolates (n = 888) obtained from 22 veterinary diagnostic laboratories were identified by MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry and subjected to antimicrobial susceptibility testing for 16 antimicrobials, representing 12 antimicrobial classes. Potential risk factors associated with methicillin resistance in Staphylococcus pseudintermedius isolates from dogs were analysed based on demographic factors and clinical history, including gender, age, previous antimicrobial treatment, chronic and/or recurrent diseases and site of infections. The most commonly identified CoPS were S. pseudintermedius (70.8%; dogs n = 616, cats n = 13) and S. aureus (13.2%, horses n = 53, dogs n = 47 and cats n = 17). Overall, the frequency of methicillin resistance among S. pseudintermedius (MRSP) and S. aureus (MRSA) was 11.8% and 12.8%, respectively. MRSP isolates were strongly associated with resistance to fluoroquinolones (OR 287; 95%CI 91.2-1144.8) and clindamycin (OR 105.2, 95%CI 48.5-231.9). MRSA isolates from dogs and cats were also more likely to be resistant to fluoroquinolones (OR 5.4, 95%CI 0.6-252.1), whereas MRSA from horses were more likely to be resistant to rifampicin. In multivariate analysis, MRSP-positive status was significantly associated with particular infection sites, including surgical (OR 8.8; 95%CI 3.74-20.7), and skin and soft tissue (OR 3.9; 95%CI 1.97-7.51). S. pseudintermedius isolated from dogs with surgical site infections were three times more likely to be methicillin-resistant if cases had received prior antimicrobial treatment. Whilst the survey results indicate the proportion of CoPS obtained from Australian companion animals that are methicillin-resistant is currently moderate, the identified risk factors suggest that it could rapidly increase without adequate biosecurity and infection control procedures in veterinary practice.Sugiyono Saputra, David Jordan, Kate A.     Off-Critical Logarithmic Minimal Models

    We consider the integrable minimal models M(m,m;t){\cal M}(m,m';t), corresponding to the φ1,3\varphi_{1,3} perturbation off-criticality, in the {\it logarithmic limit\,} m,mm, m'\to\infty, m/mp/pm/m'\to p/p' where p,pp, p' are coprime and the limit is taken through coprime values of m,mm,m'. We view these off-critical minimal models M(m,m;t){\cal M}(m,m';t) as the continuum scaling limit of the Forrester-Baxter Restricted Solid-On-Solid (RSOS) models on the square lattice. Applying Corner Transfer Matrices to the Forrester-Baxter RSOS models in Regime III, we argue that taking first the thermodynamic limit and second the {\it logarithmic limit\,} yields off-critical logarithmic minimal models LM(p,p;t){\cal LM}(p,p';t) corresponding to the φ1,3\varphi_{1,3} perturbation of the critical logarithmic minimal models LM(p,p){\cal LM}(p,p'). Specifically, in accord with the Kyoto correspondence principle, we show that the logarithmic limit of the one-dimensional configurational sums yields finitized quasi-rational characters of the Kac representations of the critical logarithmic minimal models LM(p,p){\cal LM}(p,p'). We also calculate the logarithmic limit of certain off-critical observables Or,s{\cal O}_{r,s} related to One Point Functions and show that the associated critical exponents βr,s=(2α)Δr,sp,p\beta_{r,s}=(2-\alpha)\,\Delta_{r,s}^{p,p'} produce all conformal dimensions Δr,sp,p<(pp)(9pp)4pp\Delta_{r,s}^{p,p'}<{(p'-p)(9p-p')\over 4pp'} in the infinitely extended Kac table. The corresponding Kac labels (r,s)(r,s) satisfy (pspr)2<8p(pp)(p s-p' r)^2< 8p(p'-p). The exponent 2α=p2(pp)2-\alpha ={p'\over 2(p'-p)} is obtained from the logarithmic limit of the free energy giving the conformal dimension Δt=1α2α=2ppp=Δ1,3p,p\Delta_t={1-\alpha\over 2-\alpha}={2p-p'\over p'}=\Delta_{1,3}^{p,p'} for the perturbing field tt.     [ABRIDGED] The new generation of wide field optical imaging like the Canada France Hawaii Telescope Legacy Survey (CFHTLS) enables discoveries of all types of gravitational lenses present in the sky. The Strong Lensing Legacy Survey (SL2S) project has started an inventory, respectively for clusters or groups of galaxies lenses, and for Einstein rings around distant massive ellipticals. Here we attempt to extend this inventory by finding lensing events produced by massive edge-on disk galaxies which remains a poorly documented class of lenses.     Fluoroquinolones (FQs) are a recommended treatment for Escherichia coli infections in companion animals, particularly in cases of resistance to other drug classes. In a retrospective study, 162 canine clinical E. coli isolates, obtained from veterinary diagnostic submissions (January 2005 - June 2008), were analyzed for phylogenetic group and antibiogram phenotype, using nine antimicrobials and enrofloxacin, ciprofloxacin, moxifloxacin and pradofloxacin minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs), either in the absence or presence of an efflux pump inhibitor. The isolate susceptibility distribution was bimodal; a high proportion (141/162;87%) showed a sensitivity equivalent to wildtype E. coli (enrofloxacin MIC 0.004 - 0.06 μg/mL), while a minority (4/162;2%) showed reduced susceptibility (enrofloxacin MICs of 0.125 - 0.5 μg/mL), and the remainder (17/162;10%) yielding enrofloxacin MICs in the highlevel resistance range of ≥16 μg/mL. All FQ-resistant isolates were also multidrug-resistant. The majority of FQsensitive isolates belonged to phylogenetic group B2 (101/162;62%), and the majority of resistant isolates to group D (8/17;47%). A single resistant B2 isolate and three FQ-sensitive isolates were identified as ST131. Efflux pump activity contributed significantly to MICs for all FQs, except for ciprofloxacin, which may be attributable to its higher polarity compared to the other FQs. These findings confirm a low prevalence of FQ resistance in Australian canine E. coli isolates. Detection of a high moxifloxacin: low ciprofloxacin MIC efflux-associated phenotype (102/162;63%) amongst canine strains may indicate previous exposure to moxifloxacin selective pressure, providing more evidence of exchange of E. coli strains between humans and dogs. The presence of sensitive ST131 strains in the isolate collection does suggest, however, that resistant ST131 strains could potentially emerge under both human and veterinary antimicrobial selection pressure, a risk that could be mitigated by using the most active fluoroquinolone (i.e. pradofloxacin in dogs) against wild-type E. coli at mutant prevention concentrations.Joanne L, Platell, Darren J.
