    Comparison of acoustic and strain gauge techniques for crack closure measurements

    A quantitative study on the systems performances of the COD gauge and the acoustic transmission techniques to elastic deformation of part-through crack and compact tension specimens has been conducted. It is shown that the two instruments measure two completely different quantities: The COD gauge yields information on the length change of the specimen whereas the acoustic technique is sensitive directly to the amount of contract area between two surfaces, interfering with the acoustic signal. In another series of experiments, compression tests on parts with specifically prepared surfaces were performed so that the surface contact area could be correlated with the transmitted acoustic signal, as well as the acoustic with the COD gauge signal. A linear relation between contact area and COD gauge signal was obtained until full contact had been established

    Isomorphic classical molecular dynamics model for an excess electron in a supercritical fluid

    Ring polymer molecular dynamics (RPMD) is used to directly simulate the dynamics of an excess electron in a supercritical fluid over a broad range of densities. The accuracy of the RPMD model is tested against numerically exact path integral statistics through the use of analytical continuation techniques. At low fluid densities, the RPMD model substantially underestimates the contribution of delocalized states to the dynamics of the excess electron. However, with increasing solvent density, the RPMD model improves, nearly satisfying analytical continuation constraints at densities approaching those of typical liquids. In the high density regime, quantum dispersion substantially decreases the self-diffusion of the solvated electron. In this regime where the dynamics of the electron is strongly coupled to the dynamics of the atoms in the fluid, trajectories that can reveal diffusive motion of the electron are long in comparison to βℏ\beta\hbar.Comment: 24 pages, 4 figure

    State-to-State Differential and Relative Integral Cross Sections for Rotationally Inelastic Scattering of H2O by Hydrogen

    State-to-state differential cross sections (DCSs) for rotationally inelastic scattering of H2O by H2 have been measured at 71.2 meV (574 cm-1) and 44.8 meV (361 cm-1) collision energy using crossed molecular beams combined with velocity map imaging. A molecular beam containing variable compositions of the (J = 0, 1, 2) rotational states of hydrogen collides with a molecular beam of argon seeded with water vapor that is cooled by supersonic expansion to its lowest para or ortho rotational levels (JKaKc= 000 and 101, respectively). Angular speed distributions of fully specified rotationally excited final states are obtained using velocity map imaging. Relative integral cross sections are obtained by integrating the DCSs taken with the same experimental conditions. Experimental state-specific DCSs are compared with predictions from fully quantum scattering calculations on the most complete H2O-H2 potential energy surface. Comparison of relative total cross sections and state-specific DCSs show excellent agreement with theory in almost all detailsComment: 46 page

    Evaluation of Machine Learning Tools for Inspection of Steam Generator Tube Structures using Pulsed Eddy Current

    Inspection of multi-component systems, such as nuclear steam generator (SG) tube support structures, is complicated by multiple overlapping degradation modes. The simultaneous and precise measurement of more than two interdependent parameters is challenging when standard statistical regression analysis tools are used. Artificial neural networks (ANNs) have recently been applied to pulsed eddy current (PEC) data for inspection of Alloy 800 SG tube fretting, in the presence of tube off-set within a corroded ferromagnetic support structure. Signals were analyzed using modified principal component analysis (MPCA) followed by an ANN analysis, which simultaneously targeted four parameters associated with the support structure. These were hole diameter, tube off-centering in two mutually orthogonal directions and fret depth. In this work, the ANN analysis is compared with that performed by a Support Vector Machine (SVM) analysis of the same data. Comparable results are achieved for some parameters with both machine learning analysis tools. However, parameters with changing signal variance, such as those associated with support structure diameter, are not as easily compensated for using standard SVM analysis. Both techniques also rely on the availability of a representative training data set that may be difficult to come by for general inspection conditions
