Risk assessment of the herbicide clomazone in the aquatic life.
Clomazone (2-(2-chlorophenyl)methyl-4.4-dimethyl-3-isoxazolidinone) is a post emergence herbicide widely used in rice fields in Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil) with high activity against Gramineae at the recommended application rate(AR).of 700g/ha. The herbicide input into the aquatic ecosystem may occur by aerial application or water drainage. The presence of this chemical in the water may affect non-target organisms leading to impairments in the aquatic food chain. Studies were conducted in this work to evaluate the risk of Clomazone using the estimated mean affective concentration (EC50) for the microalgae Selenastrum capricornutum(96h), the duckweed Lemna valdiviana(96h) and the crustacean Daphnia similis(48h). The EC50 values were 11.2; 31.7 and 13.8 mg/l, respectively. According to the obtained data, and considering a direct input of the herbicide in a 10cm column water, the estimated maximum application rate that doesn't cause acute effects is 5.3 AR for S. capricornutum, 6.5 AR for D. similis and 15.0 AR for L. valdiviana. The estimated maximum application rate that doesn't cause chronic effects is 2.0 AR for D. similis, 1.6 AR for S. capricornutum and 4.5 AR for L. valviana

Stability and electronic structure of the complex KPtCl structure-type hydrides
The stability and bonding of the ternary complex KPtCl structure
hydrides is discussed using first principles density functional calculations.
The cohesion is dominated by ionic contributions, but ligand field effects are
important, and are responsible for the 18-electron rule. Similarities to oxides
are discussed in terms of the electronic structure. However, phonon
calculations for SrRuH also show differences, particularly in the
polarizability of the RuH octahedra. Nevertheless, the yet to be made
compounds PbRuH and BeFeH are possible ferroelectrics. The
electronic structure and magnetic properties of the decomposition product,
FeBe are reported. Implications of the results for H storage are discussed
Nonlinear resonance in a three-terminal carbon nanotube resonator
The RF-response of a three-terminal carbon nanotube resonator coupled to
RF-transmission lines is studied by means of perturbation theory and direct
numerical integration. We find three distinct oscillatory regimes, including
one regime capable of exhibiting very large hysteresis loops in the frequency
response. Considering a purely capacitive transduction, we derive a set of
algebraic equations which can be used to find the output power (S-parameters)
for a device connected to transmission lines with characteristic impedance

Normalization factors for magnetic relaxation of small particle systems in non-zero magnetic field
We critically discuss relaxation experiments in magnetic systems that can be
characterized in terms of an energy barrier distribution, showing that proper
normalization of the relaxation data is needed whenever curves corresponding to
different temperatures are to be compared. We show how these normalization
factors can be obtained from experimental data by using the
scaling method without making any assumptions about the nature of the energy
barrier distribution. The validity of the procedure is tested using a

beta-decay study of Cu-77
A beta-decay study of Cu-77 has been performed at the ISOLDE mass separator
with the aim to deduce its beta-decay properties and to obtain spectroscopic
information on Zn-77. Neutron-rich copper isotopes were produced by means of
proton- or neutron-induced fission reactions on U-238. After the production,
Cu-77 was selectively laser ionized, mass separated and sent to different
detection systems where beta-gamma and beta-n coincidence data were collected.
We report on the deduced half-live, decay scheme, and possible spin assignment
of 77Cu
Dic(9;20)(p13;q11) in childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia is related to low cellular resistance to asparaginase, cytarabine and corticosteroids.

Please click on the hyperlink in Additional Links fieldDic(9;20)(p13;q11) was first described as a nonrandom chromosome abnormality in B-cell precursor acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (BCP ALL) in the mid 1990s,1, 2 and 71 dic(9;20)-positive cases have since then been reported.3, 4, 5 Approximately 90% of these cases were children or adolescents, with dic(9;20) occurring in about 2% of childhood BCP ALL.6 The recent review by Forestier et al.5 describes that dic(9;20)-leukaemias are of B-cell precursor immunophenotype, never have a high hyperdiploid modal number, show a female predominance, and have a significant age incidence peak at 3 years. Most patients are allocated to non-standard risk treatment arms due to high WBC (median 24 109/l) and a relatively high frequency of CNS disease or other extra-medullary leukaemia (EML) at diagnosis. The prognostic implications of dic(9;20) are to a large extent unknown. A relatively large proportion of the relapses reported in the literature have been extra-medullary, and post-relapse treatment including block therapy has been successful in several patients, as illustrated by a p-EFS of 0.62 and a predicted overall survival of 0.82 at 5 years for the 24 Nordic cases.
