    Automating the Classification of Thematic Rasters for Weighted Overlay Analysis in GeoPlanner for ArcGIS

    Esri’s GeoPlanner for ArcGIS application provides powerful analysis capabilities through the weighted overlay analysis modeler. This modeler consumes weighted overlay services composed of pre-processed raster layers. Creating custom weighted overlay services for GeoPlanner is a difficult and complex process that requires both domain-specific and GIS expertise. This challenge was addressed by simplifying the weighted overlay service creation workflow and developing two new custom Python tools that guide GeoPlanner users through the process of preparing input datasets and then classifying the raster datasets. Where possible these tools automate the required steps and where user input is needed, the tools provide default recommendations based on the input datasets properties and characteristics. As a result, the weighted overlay services creation workflow has been significantly improved and more GeoPlanner users can include their own data in weighted overlay analyses

    The Evolution of Dragons

    Dragons have been depicted in human art as early as 4500 BCE. For centuries, these fantasy creatures have inspired countless folk and fantasy tales, as well as appearing in the art of different cultures around the world. Now there are thousands of different depictions of these huge, flying, fire-breathing lizards, but are any of them possible? In this study, I reference peer-reviewed scientific articles, phylogenetic analysis, and paleoart studies to create biologically-sound dragons. Basing the dragon lineage on a real branch of webbed-winged scansoriopterygids—an extinct family of climbing and gliding maniraptoran dinosaurs—I explored the possible wing-structure, fire-breathing abilities, and effects of adaptive radiation on these hypothetical dragons. My research, compiled in an illustrated and easy to read book, will be both entertaining and educational. Catching the attention of readers with the idea of scientifically correct dragons, I will then take them on an enlightening journey through evolutionary biology concepts like homology, convergent evolution, and alternate evolution. It is important to educate the public on basic biology so that they better understand the scientific (or unscientific) research they are shown on media, helping to bridge the communication gap between scientists and the public

    The conditions of New Mexico and its time of annexation to the United States were different from most other territories that had been added. The population was composed almost entirely of Spanish descent and Indians. Their customs and ideas of church and state differed completely from those of the American subjects. The climatic and geographic conditions of the territory caused the living conditions to be entirely different. The problem in this study is to show how these conditions affected the educational development and how many obstacles were overcome in establishing a system of public schools. The legal status of the public schools and the progress made in them are included in the problem. The purpose of this study was to collect and arrange the most authentic information available on the subject, from both primary and secondary sources. Particular effort was made to arrange this material in such a way that the average reader will find it interesting and valuable

    The Turbulence Regime of the Atmospheric Surface Layer in the Presence of Shallow Cold Drainage Flows: Application of Laser Scintillometry

    The presence of shallow cold flows in the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) instigates changes in the turbulent regime of the atmospheric surface layer (ASL). This small scale flow circulation introduces radiative cooling controls over large areas in polar latitudes during winter. In this study, microscale dynamic and turbulent variables have been obtained in the framework of the Winter Boundary Layer Experiment in Fairbanks, Alaska, developed during the winters of 2009/2010 and 2010/2011. Multiscale surface turbulence observations based on Eddy covariance and laser scintillometry were combined with Doppler acoustic sounding to document simultaneous changes in the ABL flow and ASL turbulence. We computed changes in momentum and heat fluxes characterizing intermittent and persistent modes of the drainage flow over three study cases. On the basis of laser scintillometry observations, we argue that a significant source of turbulence aiming at the surface fluxes has origins in the upper level shear-induced thermal turbulence at the top of the ABL

Although within-population expected heterozygosity did not differ between edge and core populations, allelic richness was significantly lower in the edge populations. This finding is consistent with a loss of rare alleles due to genetic drift in demographically unstable edge populations

    The potential for using acoustic tracking to monitor the movement of the West Coast rock lobster Jasus lalandii

    Although acoustic tracking has been used to study the movement of several species of clawed and spiny lobsters, only recent technological advances have provided sufficiently small transmitters to examine the utility of using acoustic tracking as a means to analyse the movement of relatively small spiny lobsters, such as Jasus lalandii. The effect of the transmitter on the mobility of J. lalandii was tested in aquarium experiments and was shown to have no influence on movement in three separate experiments. Thereafter, adult male rock lobsters (86–98mm carapace length) were tracked in field trials for up to 32 days at Betty's Bay (n = 4) and Hermanus (n = 5) off the Western Cape, South Africa. Tracking J. lalandii in the field using acoustic tags was successful, even in areas with dense kelp beds and rocky outcrops. The signal from the transmitters was readily detectable from the surface and subsequent use of underwater tracking equipment enabled visual confirmation of the position of the rock lobsters. Lobsters moved significantly longer distances (>45m day−1) in the first two days following tagging than during any subsequent time period (<10m day−1). This suggests that transmitter attachment and/or handling altered the movement pattern for the first 72 hours after tagging.     Analysis of regulatory protease sequences identified through bioinformatic data mining of the Schistosoma mansoni genome

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>New chemotherapeutic agents against <it>Schistosoma mansoni</it>, an etiological agent of human schistosomiasis, are a priority due to the emerging drug resistance and the inability of current drug treatments to prevent reinfection. Proteases have been under scrutiny as targets of immunological or chemotherapeutic anti-<it>Schistosoma </it>agents because of their vital role in many stages of the parasitic life cycle. Function has been established for only a handful of identified <it>S. mansoni </it>proteases, and the vast majority of these are the digestive proteases; very few of the conserved classes of regulatory proteases have been identified from <it>Schistosoma </it>species, despite their vital role in numerous cellular processes. To that end, we identified protease protein coding genes from the <it>S. mansoni </it>genome project and EST library.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We identified 255 protease sequences from five catalytic classes using predicted proteins of the <it>S. mansoni </it>genome. The vast majority of these show significant similarity to proteins in KEGG and the Conserved Domain Database. Proteases include calpains, caspases, cytosolic and mitochondrial signal peptidases, proteases that interact with ubiquitin and ubiquitin-like molecules, and proteases that perform regulated intramembrane proteolysis. Comparative analysis of classes of important regulatory proteases find conserved active site domains, and where appropriate, signal peptides and transmembrane helices. Phylogenetic analysis provides support for inferring functional divergence among regulatory aspartic, cysteine, and serine proteases.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Numerous proteases are identified for the first time in <it>S. mansoni</it>. We characterized important regulatory proteases and focus analysis on these proteases to complement the growing knowledge base of digestive proteases. This work provides a foundation for expanding knowledge of proteases in <it>Schistosoma </it>species and examining their diverse function and potential as targets for new chemotherapies.</p
