    The effects of a 9-week hip focused weight training program on hip and knee kinematics and kinetics in experienced female dancers

    Increased involvement of the hip musculature during some movements is associated with enhanced performance and reduced injury risk. However, the impact of hip dominant weight training methods on movement strategy has seen limited attention within the literature. The aim of this study was to evaluate if a 9-week hip dominant weight training intervention promotes a more hip dominant movement strategy leading to an improvement in countermovement jump performance. Twenty-two experienced female dancers were recruited and separated into an intervention (age 24.4 ± 6.3 years, body height 165.5 ± 5.8 cm, body mass 65.9 ± 5.6 kg) and a control (age 22.9 ± 5.6 years, body height 163.3 ± 5.4 cm, body mass 57.4 ± 6.8 kg) group. The intervention group participated in a 9-week hip dominant training intervention, which consisted of a wide stance back squat, Romanian deadlift, hip thrusters, and a bent over row. Hip and knee kinematics and kinetics, and countermovement jump performance were assessed pre and post training. Significant interaction effects were found for peak hip joint moment (p = 0.030, η2 = 0.214) and countermovement jump performance (p = 0.003, η2 = 0.356), indicating an increase in peak hip joint moment and countermovement jump performance for the intervention group. Specifically, the intervention group showed a mean increase in jump height of 11.5%. The data show that the use of a hip dominant weight training strategy can improve hip contribution in the propulsion phase of the countermovement jump. Strength and conditioning specialists should incorporate hip dominant weight training exercises to increase hip strength and improve performance

    Protein-based oncopanel as addition to target sequencing in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma to individualize treatment decisions

    Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is a heterogeneous group of cancers and patients have limited therapy options if primary treatment fails. Therefore, additional information about the biology of the tumor is essential. Here we performed a feasibility study of concurrently applying two precision diagnostic tools in a consecutive series of HNSCC patients. We analyzed tumor samples of 31 patients using a genomic (oncomine) and a proteomic, immunohistochemical approach (oncopanel) and compared the result, also in the focus on their overlapping therapeutical targets. We found no strong correlation between the two approaches and observed a higher proportion of marker expression for the immunohistochemical panel. However, both panels show in our HNSCC cohort distinct patterns with druggable targets. The data suggest that both approaches complement one another and can be applied side-by-side to identify the best targets for the development of individual treatment options for HNSCC patients

    The Λp\bf{\Lambda p} interaction studied via femtoscopy in p + Nb reactions at sNN=3.18 GeV\mathbf{\sqrt{s_{NN}}=3.18} ~\mathrm{\bf{GeV}}

    We report on the first measurement of pΛp\Lambda and pppp correlations via the femtoscopy method in p+Nb reactions at sNN=3.18 GeV\mathrm{\sqrt{s_{NN}}=3.18} ~\mathrm{GeV}, studied with the High Acceptance Di-Electron Spectrometer (HADES). By comparing the experimental correlation function to model calculations, a source size for pppp pairs of r0,pp=2.02±0.01(stat)0.12+0.11(sys) fmr_{0,pp}=2.02 \pm 0.01(\mathrm{stat})^{+0.11}_{-0.12} (\mathrm{sys}) ~\mathrm{fm} and a slightly smaller value for pΛp\Lambda of r0,Λp=1.62±0.02(stat)0.08+0.19(sys) fmr_{0,\Lambda p}=1.62 \pm 0.02(\mathrm{stat})^{+0.19}_{-0.08}(\mathrm{sys}) ~\mathrm{fm} is extracted. Using the geometrical extent of the particle emitting region, determined experimentally with pppp correlations as reference together with a source function from a transport model, it is possible to study different sets of scattering parameters. The pΛp\Lambda correlation is proven sensitive to predicted scattering length values from chiral effective field theory. We demonstrate that the femtoscopy technique can be used as valid alternative to the analysis of scattering data to study the hyperon-nucleon interaction.Comment: 12 pages, 11 figure

    Towards detecting genotoxic chemicals in food packaging at thresholds of toxicological concern using bioassays with high-performance thin-layer chromatography

    High-performance thin-layer chromatography (HPTLC)-bioassays are promising new methods for detecting bioactive chemicals in food packaging. Here, we test whether direct-acting genotoxic chemicals are detectable in food contact materials (FCM) using HPTLC-bioassays. First, an interactive worksheet lays out steps to calculate needed detection limits in (bio)analytical methods from regulatory limits, including thresholds of toxicological concern (TTC). Second, we show that the sensitivity of a HPTLC-genotoxicity assay to low doses of chemicals, including food contact chemicals, is greater than a standardized microtiter plate version and in vitro assays already reported. Third, using HPTLC, we detected genotoxicity in extracts of FCM, and not in simulated migrates of FCM. Applying the worksheet to calculate needed detection limits in FCM migrates, we observed that seven of ten genotoxic chemicals would be detectable with HPTLC if present at the regulatory 10 ppb limit and two of ten at TTC for adults. With development, HPTLC-bioassays might become the best option for supporting safety assessment of genotoxicants in food packaging

    Sources of Community Health Worker Motivation: A Qualitative Study in Morogoro Region, Tanzania.

    There is a renewed interest in community health workers (CHWs) in Tanzania, but also a concern that low motivation of CHWs may decrease the benefits of investments in CHW programs. This study aimed to explore sources of CHW motivation to inform programs in Tanzania and similar contexts. We conducted semi-structured interviews with 20 CHWs in Morogoro Region, Tanzania. Interviews were digitally recorded, transcribed, and coded prior to translation and thematic analysis. The authors then conducted a literature review on CHW motivation and a framework that aligned with our findings was modified to guide the presentation of results. Sources of CHW motivation were identified at the individual, family, community, and organizational levels. At the individual level, CHWs are predisposed to volunteer work and apply knowledge gained to their own problems and those of their families and communities. Families and communities supplement other sources of motivation by providing moral, financial, and material support, including service fees, supplies, money for transportation, and help with farm work and CHW tasks. Resistance to CHW work exhibited by families and community members is limited. The organizational level (the government and its development partners) provides motivation in the form of stipends, potential employment, materials, training, and supervision, but inadequate remuneration and supplies discourage CHWs. Supervision can also be dis-incentivizing if perceived as a sign of poor performance. Tanzanian CHWs who work despite not receiving a salary have an intrinsic desire to volunteer, and their motivation often derives from support received from their families when other sources of motivation are insufficient. Policy-makers and program managers should consider the burden that a lack of remuneration imposes on the families of CHWs. In addition, CHWs' intrinsic desire to volunteer does not preclude a desire for external rewards. Rather, adequate and formal financial incentives and in-kind alternatives would allow already-motivated CHWs to increase their commitment to their work

    Men’s roles in care seeking for maternal and newborn health: a qualitative study applying the three delays model to male involvement in Morogoro Region, Tanzania

    Background: Increasing the utilization of facility-based care for women and newborns in low-resource settings can reduce maternal and newborn morbidity and mortality. Men influence whether women and newborns receive care because they often control financial resources and household decisions. This influence can have negative effects if men misjudge or ignore danger signs or are unwilling or unable to pay for care. Men can also positively affect their families’ health by helping plan for delivery, supplementing women’s knowledge about danger signs, and supporting the use of facility-based care. Because of these positive implications, researchers have called for increased male involvement in maternal and newborn health. However, data gathered directly from men to inform programs are lacking. Methods: This study draws on in-depth interviews with 27 men in Morogoro Region, Tanzania whose partners delivered in the previous 14 months. Debriefings took place throughout data collection. Interview transcripts were analyzed inductively to identify relevant themes and devise an analysis questionnaire, subsequently applied deductively to all transcripts. Results: Study findings add a partner-focused dimension to the three delays model of maternal care seeking. Men in the study often, though not universally, described facilitating access to care for women and newborns at each point along this care-seeking continuum (deciding to seek care, reaching a facility, and receiving care). Specifically, men reported taking ownership of their role as decision makers and described themselves as supportive of facility-based care. Men described arranging transport and accompanying their partners to facilities, especially for non-routine care. Men also discussed purchasing supplies and medications, acting as patient advocates, and registering complaints about health services. In addition, men described barriers to their involvement including a lack of knowledge, the need to focus on income-generating activities, the cost of care, and policies limiting male involvement at facilities. Conclusion: Men can leverage their influence over household resources and decision making to facilitate care seeking and navigate challenges accessing care for women and newborns. Examining these findings from men and understanding the barriers they face can help inform interventions that encourage men to be positively and proactively involved in maternal and newborn health
