Enhancement of entanglement in one-dimensional disordered systems
The pairwise quantum entanglement of sites in disordered electronic
one-dimensional systems (rings) is studied. We focus on the effect of diagonal
and off diagonal disorder on the concurrence between electrons on
neighbor and non neighbor sites as a function of band filling. In the
case of diagonal disorder, increasing the degree of disorder leads to a
decrease of the concurrence with respect to the ordered case. However,
off-diagonal disorder produces a surprisingly strong enhancement of
entanglement. This remarkable effect occurs near half filling, where the
concurrence becomes up to 15% larger than in the ordered system.Comment: 21 pages, 9 figure
Change in the North Atlantic circulation associated with the mid-Pleistocene transition
The southwestern Iberian margin is highly sensitive to changes in the distribution of North Atlantic currents and to the position of oceanic fronts. In this work, the evolution of oceanographic parameters from 812 to 530 ka (MIS20-MIS14) is studied based on the analysis of planktonic foraminifer assemblages from site IODP-U1385 (37 degrees 34.285' N, 10 degrees 7.562' W; 2585m b.s.l.). By comparing the obtained results with published records from other North Atlantic sites between 41 and 55 degrees N, basin-wide paleoceano-graphic conditions are reconstructed. Variations of assemblages dwelling in different water masses indicate a major change in the general North Atlantic circulation during MIS16, coinciding with the definite establishment of the 100 ky cyclicity associated with the mid-Pleistocene transition. At the surface, this change consisted in the redistribution of water masses, with the subsequent thermal variation, and occurred linked to the northwestward migration of the Arctic Front (AF), and the increase in the North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW) formation with respect to previous glacials. During glacials prior to MIS16, the NADW formation was very weak, which drastically slowed down the surface circulation; the AF was at a southerly position and the North Atlantic Current (NAC) diverted southeastwards, developing steep south-north, and east-west, thermal gradients and blocking the arrival of warm water, with associated moisture, to high latitudes. During MIS16, the increase in the meridional overturning circulation, in combination with the northwestward AF shift, allowed the arrival of the NAC to subpolar latitudes, multiplying the moisture availability for ice-sheet growth, which could have worked as a positive feedback to prolong the glacials towards 100 ky cycles.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
A Bose-Einstein condensate interferometer with macroscopic arm separation
A Michelson interferometer using Bose-Einstein condensates is demonstrated
with coherence times of up to 44 ms and arm separations up to 0.18 mm. This arm
separation is larger than that observed for any previous atom interferometer.
The device uses atoms weakly confined in a magnetic guide and the atomic motion
is controlled using Bragg interactions with an off-resonant standing wave laser

Proof of a Momentum/Complexity Correspondence
We show that the holographic Complexity = Volume proposal satisfies a very
general notion of Momentum/Complexity correspondence (PC), based on the
Momentum Constraint of General Relativity. It relates the rate of complexity
variation with an appropriate matter momentum flux through spacelike extremal
surfaces. This formalizes the intuitive idea that `gravitational clumpling' of
matter increases complexity, and the required notion of `infall momentum' is
shown to have a Newtonian avatar which expresses this idea. The proposed form
of the PC correspondence is found to be exact for any solution of Einstein's
equations in 2+1 dimensions, and any spherically symmetric solution in
arbitrary dimensions, generalizing all previous calculations using spherical
thin shells. Gravitational radiation enters through a correction which does not
have a straightforward interpretation as a PC correspondence. Other
obstructions to an exact PC duality have a topological origin and arise in the

Entanglement of two qubits mediated by one-dimensional plasmonic waveguides
We investigate qubit-qubit entanglement mediated by plasmons supported by
one-dimensional waveguides. We explore both the situation of spontaneous
formation of entanglement from an unentangled state and the emergence of driven
steady-state entanglement under continuous pumping. In both cases, we show that
large values for the concurrence are attainable for qubit-qubit distances
larger than the operating wavelength by using plasmonic waveguides that are

Critical Phenomena Inside Global Monopoles
The gravitational collapse of a triplet scalar field is examined assuming a
hedgehog ansatz for the scalar field. Whereas the seminal work by Choptuik with
a single, strictly spherically symmetric scalar field found a discretely
self-similar (DSS) solution at criticality with echoing period ,
here a new DSS solution is found with period . This new critical
solution is also observed in the presence of a symmetry breaking potential as
well as within a global monopole. The triplet scalar field model contains
Choptuik's original model in a certain region of parameter space, and hence his
original DSS solution is also a solution. However, the choice of a hedgehog
