Consultation and consequences: A view on the services experienced by some young people and six families
Reports the views of some young people and 6 families on services received from social care professionals. Summarises the main themes that emerged and emphasises the issue of professional reliability as articulated in these 2 small, but in depth, studies. The views of both sets of interviewees contributed to the creation of a course for front line managers drawing from user and worker consultations. Draws on the interviews to shed light on various aspects of professional relationships with services users and what they said they wanted. Discussion sets this in the context of policy agenda
On the genericity of spacetime singularities
We consider here the genericity aspects of spacetime singularities that occur
in cosmology and in gravitational collapse. The singularity theorems (that
predict the occurrence of singularities in general relativity) allow the
singularities of gravitational collapse to be either visible to external
observers or covered by an event horizon of gravity. It is shown that the
visible singularities that develop as final states of spherical collapse are

Analysis and simulation of a magnetic bearing suspension system for a laboratory model annular momentum control device
A linear analysis and the results of a nonlinear simulation of a magnetic bearing suspension system which uses permanent magnet flux biasing are presented. The magnetic bearing suspension is part of a 4068 N-m-s (3000 lb-ft-sec) laboratory model annular momentum control device (AMCD). The simulation includes rigid body rim dynamics, linear and nonlinear axial actuators, linear radial actuators, axial and radial rim warp, and power supply and power driver current limits
Exotic attractors of the non-equilibrium Rabi-Hubbard model
We explore the phase diagram of the dissipative Rabi-Hubbard model, as could
be realized by a Raman-pumping scheme applied to a coupled cavity array. There
exist various exotic attractors, including ferroelectric, antiferroelectric,
and inccomensurate fixed points, as well as regions of persistent oscillations.
Many of these features can be understood analytically by truncating to the two
lowest lying states of the Rabi model on each site. We also show that these

Prediction of long and short time rheological behavior in soft glassy materials
We present an effective time approach to predict long and short time
rheological behavior of soft glassy materials from experiments carried out over
practical time scales. Effective time approach takes advantage of relaxation
time dependence on aging time that allows time-aging time superposition even
when aging occurs over the experimental timescales. Interestingly experiments
on variety of soft materials demonstrate that the effective time approach
successfully predicts superposition for diverse aging regimes ranging from
sub-aging to hyper-aging behaviors. This approach can also be used to predict
behavior of any response function in molecular as well as spin glasses.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figure
On the Role of Initial Data in the Gravitational Collapse of Inhomogeneous Dust
We consider here the gravitational collapse of a spherically symmetric
inhomogeneous dust cloud described by the Tolman-Bondi models. By studying a
general class of these models, we find that the end state of the collapse is
either a black hole or a naked singularity, depending on the parameters of the
initial density distribution, which are , the initial central density
of the massive body, and , the initial boundary. The collapse ends in a
black hole if the dimensionless quantity constructed out of this
initial data is greater than 0.0113, and it ends in a naked singularity if
is less than this number. A simple interpretation of this result can be
given in terms of the strength of the gravitational potential at the starting

Visualizing the logistic map with a microcontroller
The logistic map is one of the simplest nonlinear dynamical systems that
clearly exhibit the route to chaos. In this paper, we explored the evolution of
the logistic map using an open-source microcontroller connected to an array of
light emitting diodes (LEDs). We divided the one-dimensional interval
into ten equal parts, and associated and LED to each segment. Every time an
iteration took place a corresponding LED turned on indicating the value
returned by the logistic map. By changing some initial conditions of the

Discovery of a red quasar with recurrent activity
We report a new double-double radio quasar, DDRQ, J07464526 which exhibits
two cycles of episodic activity. From radio continuum observations at 607 MHz
using the GMRT and 1400 MHz from the FIRST survey we confirm its episodic
nature. We examine the SDSS optical spectrum and estimate the black hole mass
to be (8.20.3)10M from its observed MgII emission
line, and the Eddington ratio to be 0.03. The black hole mass is significantly
smaller than for the other reported DDRQ, J0935+0204, while the Eddington
ratios are comparable. The SDSS spectrum is significantly red continuum
dominated suggesting that it is highly obscured with
mag. This high obscuration further indicates the
existence of a large quantity of dust and gas along the line of sight, which
