    Teaching respect: a philosophical analysis

    According to a Zulu proverb a human being can only become truly human because of others. Each person can only become more human, more himself- regardless of his sex - through the co-involvement of others. It is the love for one’s neighbour and the respect one has for him/her as a person which makes one consider the other party's feelings, viewpoints and circumstances. In order to arrive at a situation of peaceful coexistence it is important to realize that human attitudes and a mature life style evolve through a process of learning and interaction with others. It is a timeconsuming and costly process which starts at infancy and continues throughout someone's life. Instruction concerning interpersonal relations and the teaching of respect cannot be confined to individual lessons or working sessions at home or in school. Discussions and conversations concerning interpersonal relations need to form an integral and natural part of a child’s life within the home environment and throughout the pupil's school career. It is senseless if educators talk about the importance of teaching respect only to reveal disrespectful behaviour themselves, or to talk about the importance of self-esteem in the paying of respect whilst causing children to feel negative about themselves. To be able to express respect to other human beings, one needs to be respected. A child needs to experience how it feels when homage is paid. The following rule of life applies in this regard: one can never give if one has never received respect

    Prenatal evaluation of kidney function in mice using dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging

    Glomerular differentiation starts as soon as embryonic stage 12 in mice and suggests that kidneys may be functional at this stage. Dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance microscopy, a noninvasive imaging technique, was used to assess renal function establishment in utero. Indeed, in adults (n = 3), an intravenous injection of gadolinium-DOTA induced in a first step a massive and rapid drop in kidney signal intensity followed, in a second step, by a drop in bladder signal intensity. The delay in signal changes between kidney and bladder reflected glomerular filtration. Pregnant mice underwent anatomical and dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance microscopy on postcoital days 12-13 (n = 2), 13-14 (n = 1), 14-15 (n = 3), 15-16 (n = 2), 16-17 (n = 3), 17-18 (n = 3), and 18-19 (n = 1). Kidneys and bladder were unambiguously depicted prior to contrast agent injection on stage 15-16 embryos. Contrast agent injection allowed kidney, detection as early as stage 12-13 but not bladder. Kinetics of signal changes demonstrated that glomerular filtration is established at embryonic stage 15-16 in mice. Thus, anatomical and dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance microscopy may be a powerful noninvasive method for in vivo prenatal developmental and functional studies

    The appropriateness of patients' visits to an emergency department.

    Aim: The appropriateness of patient visits to an emergency unit was investigated in this study. Method: This descriptive study included 2968 patient cards from the National District Hospital, Bloemfontein emergency unit during 2003. Patient information was evaluated according to predetermined criteria to determine whether a visit was appropriate or not. Results: The patient's ages varied between 0 to 97 years (median 29 year) and 50.8% was female. Informal residencies presented 26.4% of patient's neighbourhoods. The most common chronic condition was hypertension (7.9%). Only 8.4% of patients already used medication for their presenting condition. Most (72.4%) patients presented after hours and 36.6% presented during weekends. The total number of injuries was 22.9% and 75.6% were examined for medical or surgical problems. The criterion with the most visits was the trauma category (21.8%). The criterion with the least patients (0.3%) was the criterion for significant bleeding. According to the results more than a third (35.4% ; 95% CI 33.7% ; 37.2%) of the patient visits can be seen as inappropriate. In MSPM, multivariate data analysis techniques such as principal component analysis (PCA) are commonly employed to project the (possibly many) process variables onto a lower dimensional space where they are jointly monitored given a historical or specified reference set that is within statistical control. In this paper, PCA and biplots are employed together in an innovative way to develop an efficient multivariate process monitoring methodology for variable contribution identification and visualization. The methodology is applied to a commercial coal gasification production facility with multiple parallel production processes. More specifically, it is shown how the methodology is used to specify the optimal principal component combinations and biplot axes for visualization and interpretation of process performance, and for the identification of the critical variables responsible for performance deviations, which yielded direct benefits for the commercial production facility.https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0169743919305088?via%3DihubPublishers versio
