Analysis of Finite Microstrip Structures Using an Efficient Implementation of the Integral Equation Technique
An efficient numerical implementation of the Integral Equation technique (IE) has
been developed for the analysis of the electrical characteristics of finite microstrip structures.
The technique formulates a volume version of the IE for the finite dielectric objects, and a
standard surface IE technique for the metallic areas. The system of integral equations formu-
lated are solved with special numerical techniques described in this paper. The input impedances
of several microstrip antennas have been computed, showing good agreement with respect mea-
surements. The technique has shown to be accurate even for complex geometries containing
several stacked dielectric layers. The radiation patterns of the structures have also been com-
puted, and measured results from real manufactured hardware confirm that backside radiation
and secondary lobes are accurately predicted by the theoretical model. The paper also discuss
a suitable excitation model for finite size ground planes, and investigates the possibilities for
an independent meshing of the metallic areas and the dielectric objects inside a given geom-
etry. The practical value of the approach derived is that microstrip circuits can be designed
minimizing the volume and size of the dielectric substrates. This work has been supported bythe Spanish National Project ESP2001-4546-PE, and RegionalSeneca Project PB/4/FS/02
The K2K SciBar Detector
A new near detector, SciBar, for the K2K long-baseline neutrino oscillation
expe riment was installed to improve the measurement of neutrino energy
spectrum and to study neutrino interactions in the energy region around 1 GeV.
SciBar is a 'fully active' tracking detector with fine segmentation consisting
of plastic scintillator bars. The detector was constructed in summer 2003 and
is taking data since October 2003. The basic design and initial performance is
presented.Comment: 7 pages, 4figures, Contributed to Proceedings of the 10th Vienna

Experimental study of the atmospheric neutrino backgrounds for proton decay to positron and neutral pion searches in water Cherenkov detectors
The atmospheric neutrino background for proton decay to positron and neutral
pion in ring imaging water Cherenkov detectors is studied with an artificial
accelerator neutrino beam for the first time. In total, about 314,000 neutrino
events corresponding to about 10 megaton-years of atmospheric neutrino
interactions were collected by a 1,000 ton water Cherenkov detector (KT). The
KT charged-current single neutral pion production data are well reproduced by
simulation programs of neutrino and secondary hadronic interactions used in the
Super-Kamiokande (SK) proton decay search. The obtained proton to positron and
neutral pion background rate by the KT data for SK from the atmospheric
neutrinos whose energies are below 3 GeV is about two per megaton-year. This
result is also relevant to possible future, megaton-scale water Cherenkov
detectors.Comment: 13 pages, 16 figure
Measurement of single charged pion production in the charged-current interactions of neutrinos in a 1.3 GeV wide band beam
Single charged pion production in charged-current muon neutrino interactions
with carbon is studied using data collected in the K2K long-baseline neutrino
experiment. The mean energy of the incident muon neutrinos is 1.3 GeV. The data
used in this analysis are mainly from a fully active scintillator detector,
SciBar. The cross section for single production in the resonance
region ( GeV/) relative to the charged-current quasi-elastic cross
section is found to be 0.734 . The energy-dependent cross
section ratio is also measured. The results are consistent with a previous
experiment and the prediction of our model.Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures, 7 tables. Uses revtex4. Minor revisions to

Search for coherent charged pion production in neutrino-carbon interactions
We report the result from a search for charged-current coherent pion
production induced by muon neutrinos with a mean energy of 1.3 GeV. The data
are collected with a fully active scintillator detector in the K2K
long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment. No evidence for coherent pion
production is observed and an upper limit of is set on
the cross section ratio of coherent pion production to the total
charged-current interaction at 90% confidence level. This is the first
experimental limit for coherent charged pion production in the energy region of
a few GeV.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
Evidence for muon neutrino oscillation in an accelerator-based experiment
We present results for muon neutrino oscillation in the KEK to Kamioka (K2K)
long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment. K2K uses an accelerator-produced
muon neutrino beam with a mean energy of 1.3 GeV directed at the
Super-Kamiokande detector. We observed the energy dependent disappearance of
muon neutrino, which we presume have oscillated to tau neutrino. The
probability that we would observe these results if there is no neutrino
oscillation is 0.0050% (4.0 sigma).Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
Mutation of RNA Pol III Subunit rpc2/polr3b Leads to Deficiency of Subunit Rpc11 and Disrupts Zebrafish Digestive Development
The role of RNA polymerase III (Pol III) in developing vertebrates has not been examined. Here, we identify a causative mutation of the second largest Pol III subunit, polr3b, that disrupts digestive organ development in zebrafish slim jim (slj) mutants. The slj mutation is a splice-site substitution that causes deletion of a conserved tract of 41 amino acids in the Polr3b protein. Structural considerations predict that the slj Pol3rb deletion might impair its interaction with Polr3k, the ortholog of an essential yeast Pol III subunit, Rpc11, which promotes RNA cleavage and Pol III recycling. We engineered Schizosaccharomyces pombe to carry an Rpc2 deletion comparable to the slj mutation and found that the Pol III recovered from this rpc2-Δ yeast had markedly reduced levels of Rpc11p. Remarkably, overexpression of cDNA encoding the zebrafish rpc11 ortholog, polr3k, rescued the exocrine defects in slj mutants, indicating that the slj phenotype is due to deficiency of Rpc11. These data show that functional interactions between Pol III subunits have been conserved during eukaryotic evolution and support the utility of zebrafish as a model vertebrate for analysis of Pol III function
Concurrent Oral 1 - Rheumatoid Arthritis: Treatment [OP4-OP9]: OP4. Inhibition of Radiographic Progression and Improvements in Physical Function at 2 Years, with Increasing Clinical Efficacy Over Time, in Rheumatoid Arthritis (Ra) Patients Treated with Tocilizumab (Tcz): The Lithe Study
Background: Patients with moderate to severe RA who remained on methotrexate (MTX) despite inadequate response were treated with TCZ in a double-blind, randomized, controlled phase 3 trial. Results of a 2-year planned analysis from this study are presented. Methods: Patients were randomized to treatment with TCZ 4 mg/kg + MTX (TCZ4), TCZ 8 mg/kg + MTX (TCZ8) or placebo + MTX (CON) every 4 weeks. If patients failed to respond ( 60% of patients and the DAS28 remission (DAS28 < 2.6) rate was 48% at week 52 and continued to increase to week 104. By week 52, patients treated with TCZ8 had clinically significant improvements in SJC that were maintained through week 104. Rates per 100 PY for adverse events (AEs) were higher in TCZ8 and TCZ4 (263.6, 275.4) vs CON patients (251.4) while rates for serious AEs were comparable (11.4, 12.1, 10.9, respectively). Rates per 100 PY of AEs leading to withdrawal (7.4, 32.5, 4.8) and treatment modification (8.4, 30.7, 20.4) were higher in TCZ8 and TCZ4 vs CON patients, respectively and death rates were comparable (0.6, 0.2, 0.4). Conclusions: Treatment with TCZ + MTX inhibits radiographic progression over 2 years and improves physical function as shown by DAS28 remission, LDAS and low SJC, with a manageable safety profile. Measurement of inclusive production in the Charged-Current Interactions of Neutrinos in a 1.3-GeV wide band beam
In this paper we report on the measurement of the rate of inclusive
production induced by charged-current neutrino interactions in a CH
target at a mean energy of 1.3 GeV in the K2K near detector. Out of a sample of
11,606 charged current neutrino interactions, we select 479 events with
two reconstructed photons. We find that the cross section for the inclusive
production relative to the charged-current quasi-elastic cross section
is
The energy dependent cross section ratio is also measured. The results are
consistent with previous experiments for exclusive channels on different
targets.Comment: 18 pages, 11 figures, submitted to PR
Improved search for oscillation in a long-baseline accelerator experiment
We performed an improved search for oscillation with the
KEK to Kamioka (K2K) long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment, using the
full data sample of \xspace protons on target. No evidence
for a appearance signal was found, and we set bounds on the oscillation parameters. At = , the best fit value of the K2K disappearance analysis,
we set an upper limit of 0.13 at 90% confidence
level.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figure
