    Creation and localization of entanglement in a simple configuration of coupled harmonic oscillators

    We investigate a simple arrangement of coupled harmonic oscillators which brings out some interesting effects concerning creation of entanglement. It is well known that if each member in a linear chain of coupled harmonic oscillators is prepared in a ``classical state'', such as a pure coherent state or a mixed thermal state, no entanglement is created in the rotating wave approximation. On the other hand, if one of the oscillators is prepared in a nonclassical state (pure squeezed state, for instance), entanglement may be created between members of the chain. In the setup considered here, we found that a great family of nonclassical (squeezed) states can localize entanglement in such a way that distant oscillators never become entangled. We present a detailed study of this particular localization phenomenon. Our results may find application in future solid state implementations of quantum computers, and we suggest an electromechanical system consisting of an array of coupled micromechanical oscillators as a possible implementation.Comment: 7 pages, 8 figures, minor typos fixe

    Cognition and norms: toward a developmental account of moral agency in social dilemmas

    Most recent developments in the study of social dilemmas give an increasing amount of attention to cognition, belief systems, valuations, and language. However, developments in this field operate almost entirely under epistemological assumptions which only recognize the instrumental form of rationality and deny that “value judgments” or “moral questions” have cognitive content. This standpoint erodes the moral aspect of the choice situation and obstructs acknowledgment of the links connecting cognition, inner growth, and moral reasoning, and the significance of such links in reaching cooperative solutions to many social dilemmas. Concurrently, this standpoint places the role of communication and mutual understanding in promoting cooperation in morally relevant conflicts of action in a rather mysterious situation. This paper draws on Habermas’s critique of instrumental action, and on the most recent developments in institutional and behavioral economics with a view to enhancing our knowledge of the interventions used to cope with social dilemmas. We conclude the paper with a brief presentation of a research strategy for examining the capacity of alternative developmental models to predict dissimilar choices under similar incentive conditions in social dilemmas

    Detecting the completeness of a Finsler manifold via potential theory for its infinity Laplacian

    In this paper, we study some potential theoretic aspects of the eikonal and infinity Laplace operator on a Finsler manifold MM. Our main result shows that the forward completeness of MM can be detected in terms of Liouville properties and maximum principles at infinity for subsolutions of suitable inequalities, including ΔNug(u)\Delta^N_\infty u \ge g(u). Also, an \infty-capacity criterion and a viscosity version of Ekeland principle are proved to be equivalent to the forward completeness of MM. Part of the proof hinges on a new boundary-to-interior Lipschitz estimate for solutions of ΔNu=g(u)\Delta^N_\infty u = g(u) on relatively compact sets, that implies a uniform Lipschitz estimate for certain entire, bounded solutions without requiring the completeness of MM

    Effects of Chlorpyrifos Over Reproductive Traits of Three Sympatric Freshwater Crustaceans

    The exposure to environmentally relevant chlorpyrifos concentrations (0.03, 0.06 and 0.12 µg chlorpyrifos L−1) causes increases in precopulatory guardian behavior time, amplexus reformulation after exposure and in the number of ovigerous females in the amphipod Hyalella curvispina. Effects in incubation period, effective hatching and median lethal concentration on the decapods Macrobrachium borellii and Aegla uruguayana, both in adults and embryos, were achieved at higher concentrations than those found in the environment. Environmentally relevant chlorpyrifos concentrations appear not to affect decapods but several effects in reproductive traits of amphipods were observed.Fil: Negro, Carlos Leandro.     On Nichols algebras over PGL(2,q) and PSL(2,q)

    We compute necessary conditions on Yetter-Drinfeld modules over the groups \mathbf{PGL}(2,q)=\mathbf{PGL}(2,\FF_q) and \mathbf{PSL}(2,q)=\mathbf{PSL}(2,\FF_q) to generate finite dimensional Nichols algebras. This is a first step towards a classification of pointed Hopf algebras with group of group-likes isomorphic to one of these groups. As a by-product of the techniques developed in this work, we prove that there is no non-trivial finite-dimensional pointed Hopf algebra over the Mathieu groups M20M_{20} and M21=PSL(3,4)M_{21}=\mathbf{PSL}(3,4).Comment: Minor change

    Influencia del tiempo de gelificación sobre las propiedades estructurales, vibracionales y eléctricas del compósito PEG0.2/V2O5

    Se estudiaron las propiedades estructurales, vibracionales y eléctricas de películas V2O5·nH2O y PEG0.2/V2O5 en función del tiempo de gelificación. Las películas fueron sinterizadas por sol-gel mediante la ruta del pentóxido de vanadio sobre sustratos de vidrio previamente tratados. La caracterización se llevo a cabo mediante Difracción de Rayos-X, Espectroscopía Raman y el método de las cuatro puntas convencional de van der Pauw. Los resultados indican que el aumento en el tiempo de gelificación del sol precursor (V2O5.nH2O) incrementa la calidad cristalina, el grado de hidratación, y la concentración de iones V5+ en las películas. En el compósito híbrido (PEG0.2/V2O5) los iones VO2+ actúan como enlazantes entre las cadenas poliméricas haciéndolas más compactas, lo cual facilita la movilidad de los portadores de carga eléctrica entre los iones vanadios. Los resultados mostraron una transición de fase semiconductormetal alrededor de 34°C, una transición óptica del tipo indirecta (para V2O5·nH2O) y una transición vítrea alrededor de Tg=-69°C.Structural, vibrational and electrical properties of V2O5·nH2O and PEG0.2/V2O5 films as a function of gelation time were studied. The films were sintered by sol-gel using vanadium pentoxide route on glass substrates previously treated. Films were characterized by X-Ray Diffraction, Raman Spectroscopy and the four-point van der Pauw conventional method. The results indicated that when the gelation time of the precursor (V2O5·nH2O) is increased, the crystalline quality, the degree of hydration, and V5+ ion concentration are increased. In the hybrid composite (PEG0.2/V2O5), VO2+ ions act as bonding between the polymer chains, making them more compact to facilitate the mobility of electric charge carriers between vanadium ions. The results showed a semiconductor-metal transition about 34°C, an indirect optical transition (V2O5·nH2O) and a vitreous transition around Tg=-69°C.Fil: Londoño Calderon, Cesar Leandro.     Dimensionality effects in the LDOS of ferromagnetic hosts probed via STM: spin-polarized quantum beats and spin filtering

    We theoretically investigate the local density of states (LDOS) probed by a STM tip of ferromagnetic metals hosting a single adatom and a subsurface impurity. We model the system via the two-impurity Anderson Hamiltonian. By using the equation of motion with the relevant Green functions, we derive analytical expressions for the LDOS of two host types: a surface and a quantum wire. The LDOS reveals Friedel-like oscillations and Fano interference as a function of the STM tip position. These oscillations strongly depend on the host dimension. Interestingly, we find that the spin-dependent Fermi wave numbers of the hosts give rise to spin-polarized quantum beats in the LDOS. While the LDOS for the metallic surface shows a damped beating pattern, it exhibits an opposite behavior in the quantum wire. Due to this absence of damping, the wire operates as a spatially resolved spin filter with a high efficiency.Comment: revised tex

    This paper explores the subject of motivation in educational environments, more specifically in physical education. The research study it describes is based on the concept of goal perspectives (Nicholls, 1984, Dweck and Legget, 1988, Ames, 1984, Duda, 1992), and the purpose of the study was to identify the (task or ego) goal orientations shown by secondary school students in physical education classes, together with any possible differences based either on gender or the academic stage in the students education. The sample was composed of 203 secondary school students who all answered the POSQ questionnaire. From the results that were obtained, both goal orientations were observed, with a task-basedorientation predominating. It was also shown that boys are more ego oriented than girls

    Heat Transfer Analysis in a Flow Over Concave Wall With Primary and Secondary Instabilities

    AbstractThe centrifugal instability mechanism in boundary layers over concave surfaces is responsible for the development of counter- rotating vortices, aligned in the streamwise direction, known as Görtler vortices. These vortices create two regions in the spanwise direction, the upwash and downwash regions. The downwash region is responsible for compressing the boundary layer towards the wall, increasing the drag coefficient and the heat transfer rate. The upwash region does the opposite. The Görtler vortices distort the streamwise velocity profile in the spanwise and the wall-normal directions. These distortions generate inflections in the distribution of streamwise velocity that are unstable to unsteady disturbances giving rise to secondary instabilities. In these flows the secondary instabilities can be of varicose or sinuous mode. The present paper analyses the heat transfer in a flow over a concave wall subjected to primary and secondary instabilities. The research is carried out by a Spatial Direct Numerical Simulation. The adopted parameters mimic the experimental parameters of Winoto and collaborators 17,18 and the Prandtl number adopted was Pr = 0.72. The results show that the varicose mode is the dominant secondary instability for the adopted parameters and that the spanwise average heat transfer rates can reach higher values than the turbulent ones. The higher heat transfer is caused by the mean flow distortion induced by the vortices, and this is present before high–frequency secondary instability sets in. Hence there is no direct connection to secondary instability. Possibly low–frequency modes undergo instability earlier
