Augmented reality and holograms for the visualization of mechanical engineering parts
There is an increasing number of students using tablets in schools. Mobile devices gained popularity as an educational tool and there are many schools that use them frequently in educational activities to improve learning. We found that first year students of mechanical engineering in general have difficulties in understanding 3D shapes from 2D views. There are many Augmented Reality (AR) applications available that can be used to create educational contents for these mobile devices. On the other hand, there is an increasing interest in making holograms. In this paper we studied the most popular AR systems and show examples of using an AR system for the visualization of 3D models. We also present the creation of a low cost prototype, the EducHolo, that enables the visualization of holograms supported by tablets. With this prototype students can visualize the hologram of mechanical parts, providing a better perception of the model 3D shape and improving the ability of making the 2D orthographic views and perspectives that they study in the first year of mechanical engineer

Transformations of Heun's equation and its integral relations
We find transformations of variables which preserve the form of the equation
for the kernels of integral relations among solutions of the Heun equation.
These transformations lead to new kernels for the Heun equation, given by
single hypergeometric functions (Lambe-Ward-type kernels) and by products of
two hypergeometric functions (Erd\'elyi-type). Such kernels, by a limiting
process, also afford new kernels for the confluent Heun equation.Comment: This version was published in J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 44 (2011)

Discrepancies in Determinations of the Ginzburg-Landau Parameter
Long-standing discrepancies within determinations of the Ginzburg-Landau
parameter from supercritical field measurements on superconducting
microspheres are reexamined. The discrepancy in tin is shown to result from
differing methods of analyses, whereas the discrepancy in indium is a
consequence of significantly differing experimental results. The reanalyses
however confirms the lower determinations to within experimental
uncertainties.Comment: submitted to Phys. Rev.

Copper and lead removal by peanut hulls: equilibrium and kinetic studies
This research work aims to study the use of peanut hulls, an agricultural and food industry waste, for copper
and lead removal through equilibrium and kinetic parameters evaluation. Equilibrium batch studies were performed
in a batch adsorber. The influence of initial pH was evaluated (3–5) and it was selected between 4.0
and 4.5. The maximum sorption capacities obtained for the Langmuir model were 0.21 ± 0.03 and 0.18 ± 0.02
mmol/g, respectively for copper and lead. In bi-component systems, competitive sorption of copper and lead
was verified, the total amount adsorbed being around 0.21 mmol of metal per gram of material in both mono
and bi-component systems. In the kinetic studies equilibrium was reached after 200 min contact time using a
400 rpm stirring rate, achieving 78% and 58% removal, in mono-component system, for copper and lead respectively.
Their removal follows a pseudo-second-order kinetics. These studies show that most of the metals removal
occurred in the first 20 min of contact, which shows a good uptake rate in all systems
