Menopausal/Post-Menopausal Women and Maternal Career Disruption
This chapter seeks to consider the possibility of a blindness to considering the impact of mothering and post mothering (menopause) upon the workforce in terms of career development models. There has been a continuing ‘onward and upward’ tournament (Malhotra et al., 2010) in the UK which suggests workers should continue strive to change jobs to seek higher pay and status moving around the country throughout their worklife with little regards for their familial responsibilities. Despite a discourse which suggests the economic position of women has been heralded as positively changed as there is no longer a ‘glass ceiling’ for female employees who are willing to put work before their employment (Whiteside and Harding, 2013), this provides a hollow victory. It fails to recognise that within the labour market, there will be parental years. Legislation in the UK and even Europe largely deals with ‘baby years’ but despite the inclusion of some ‘family friendly work-life balance’ initiatives, the experience for many parents is that the workplace represents a cause for work family conflict. In part this is because mothering is still stereotypically seen as a women’s role and increasing legislation provides an illusion of resolving discrimination (TUC, 2014). Integration of professional judgement and decision-making in high-level adventure sports coaching practice
This study examined the integration of professional judgement and decision-making processes in adventure sports coaching. The study utilised a thematic analysis approach to investigate the decision-making practices of a sample of high-level adventure sports coaches over a series of sessions. Results revealed that, in order to make judgements and decisions in practice, expert coaches employ a range of practical and pedagogic management strategies to create and opportunistically use time for decision-making. These approaches include span of control and time management strategies to facilitate the decision-making process regarding risk management, venue selection, aims, objectives, session content, and differentiation of the coaching process. The implication for coaches, coach education, and accreditation is the recognition and training of the approaches that“create time” for the judgements in practice, namely“creating space to think”. Calculating partial expected value of perfect information via Monte Carlo sampling algorithms
Partial expected value of perfect information (EVPI) calculations can quantify the value of learning about particular subsets of uncertain parameters in decision models. Published case studies have used different computational approaches. This article examines the computation of partial EVPI estimates via Monte Carlo sampling algorithms. The mathematical definition shows 2 nested expectations, which must be evaluated separately because of the need to compute a maximum between them. A generalized Monte Carlo sampling algorithm uses nested simulation with an outer loop to sample parameters of interest and, conditional upon these, an inner loop to sample remaining uncertain parameters. Alternative computation methods and shortcut algorithms are discussed and mathematical conditions for their use considered. Maxima of Monte Carlo estimates of expectations are biased upward, and the authors show that the use of small samples results in biased EVPI estimates. Three case studies illustrate 1) the bias due to maximization and also the inaccuracy of shortcut algorithms 2) when correlated variables are present and 3) when there is nonlinearity in net benefit functions. If relatively small correlation or nonlinearity is present, then the shortcut algorithm can be substantially inaccurate. Empirical investigation of the numbers of Monte Carlo samples suggests that fewer samples on the outer level and more on the inner level could be efficient and that relatively small numbers of samples can sometimes be used. Several remaining areas for methodological development are set out. A wider application of partial EVPI is recommended both for greater understanding of decision uncertainty and for analyzing research priorities
Managing affect in learners' questions in undergraduate science

Copyright @ 2012 Society for Research into Higher Education.This article aims to position students' classroom questioning within the literature surrounding affect and its impact on learning. The article consists of two main sections. First, the act of questioning is discussed in order to highlight how affect shapes the process of questioning, and a four-part genesis to question-asking that we call CARE is described: the construction, asking, reception and evaluation of a learner's question. This work is contextualised through studies in science education and through our work with university students in undergraduate chemistry, although conducted in the firm belief that it has more general application. The second section focuses on teaching strategies to encourage and manage learners' questions, based here upon the conviction that university students in this case learn through questioning, and that an inquiry-based environment promotes better learning than a simple ‘transmission’ setting. Seven teaching strategies developed from the authors' work are described, where university teachers ‘scaffold’ learning through supporting learners' questions, and working with these to structure and organise the content and the shape of their teaching. The article concludes with a summary of the main issues, highlighting the impact of the affective dimension of learning through questioning, and a discussion of the implications for future research
Muonium as a hydrogen analogue in silicon and germanium; quantum effects and hyperfine parameters
We report a first-principles theoretical study of hyperfine interactions,
zero-point effects and defect energetics of muonium and hydrogen impurities in
silicon and germanium. The spin-polarized density functional method is used,
with the crystalline orbitals expanded in all-electron Gaussian basis sets. The
behaviour of hydrogen and muonium impurities at both the tetrahedral and
bond-centred sites is investigated within a supercell approximation. To
describe the zero-point motion of the impurities, a double adiabatic
approximation is employed in which the electron, muon/proton and host lattice
degrees of freedom are decoupled. Within this approximation the relaxation of
the atoms of the host lattice may differ for the muon and proton, although in
practice the difference is found to be slight. With the inclusion of zero-point
motion the tetrahedral site is energetically preferred over the bond-centred
site in both silicon and germanium. The hyperfine and superhyperfine
parameters, calculated as averages over the motion of the muon, agree
reasonably well with the available data from muon spin resonance experiments.Comment: 20 pages, including 9 figures. To appear in Phys. Rev.
The landscape of gifted and talented education in England and Wales: How are teachers implementing policy?

A questionnaire survey which invited both closed and open-ended responses was carried out with a national sample of primary schools. The survey indicated an increasing proportion of coordinators, compared with a survey carried out in 1996, were identifying their gifted and talented children as well as having associated school policies. However, the survey also highlighted a number of issues which need addressing if the initiative is to achieve its objective of providing the best possible educational opportunities for children. For example, it was found that a significant number of practitioners were not aware of the existence of the National Quality Standards for gifted and talented education, provided by the UK government in 2007, and the subject-specific criteria provided by the UK’s Curriculum Authority for identification and provision have been largely ignored. The process of identifying children to be placed on the ‘gifted and talented’ register seems haphazard and based on pragmatic reasons. Analysis of teachers’ responses also revealed a range of views and theoretical positioning held by them, which have implications for classroom practice. As the ‘gifted and talented’ initiative in the UK is entering a second decade, and yet more significant changes in policy are introduced, pertinent questions need to be raised and given consideration
Impact of Statewide Program To Promote Appropriate Antimicrobial Drug Use
The Wisconsin Antibiotic Resistance Network (WARN) was launched in 1999 to educate physicians and the public about judicious antimicrobial drug use. Public education included radio and television advertisements, posters, pamphlets, and presentations at childcare centers. Physician education included mailings, susceptibility reports, practice guidelines, satellite conferences, and presentations. We analyzed antimicrobial prescribing data for primary care physicians in Wisconsin and Minnesota (control state). Antimicrobial prescribing declined 19.8% in Minnesota and 20.4% in Wisconsin from 1998 to 2003. Prescribing by internists declined significantly more in Wisconsin than Minnesota, but the opposite was true for pediatricians. We conclude that the secular trend of declining antimicrobial drug use continued through 2003, but a large-scale educational program did not generate greater reductions in Wisconsin despite improved knowledge. State and local organizations should consider a balanced approach that includes limited statewide educational activities with increasing emphasis on local, provider-level interventions and policy development to promote careful antimicrobial drug use
