    Quality characteristics of fillets of rainbow trout fed acid or re-esterified rapeseed oils as dietary fat sources

    Alternatives to the use of native vegetable oils (VO) as fish oil (FO) replacers in aqua feeds were evaluated. Acid oils are a free fatty acid (FFA)-rich by-product mainly from the refining of VO. Re-esterified oils are the final product of a chemical esterification reaction between acid oils and glycerol, and have less FFA and more monoand diacylglycerols (MAG and DAG), known for being good emulsifiers, than crude VO. Therefore, they could have a higher nutritive value than that of the native and acid oils. In two earlier studies in rainbow trout (Trullàs et al., 2015, 2016), diets including acid and/or re-esterified VO resulted in total fatty acid apparent digestibility coefficients above 95%. Moreover, no negative effects on growth, plasma biochemical parameters and morphology of tissues were observed when compared to the native oil diet. For all these reasons, the present study aimed at assessing their effects on the final quality of fillets of rainbow trout. Triplicate groups of rainbow trout were fed eight experimental diets containing 15% of different types of experimental rapeseed oils in addition to 5% of FO during 72 days. The experimental rapeseed oils were native (RNO), acid (RAO), re-esterified (REO), or blends (66% RN-33% RAO/33% RN-66% RAO or 66% REO-33% RAO/33% REO-66% RAO). Commercial FO was used for the control diet (F). The colorimetric analysis resulted in significant differences only in b* and C* in both fresh and thawed fillets, as well as in significant correlations between the colorimetric parameters among diets. For the total fat content, fillets of fish fed the control diet obtained the highest values, which were higher than those of fish fed diets containing RNO and the blend 66% REO-33% RAO. No differences in texture, liquid holding capacity, and TBARS were found among fillets of fish fed the different diets. Regarding tocopherol concentrations in fillets, α-tocopherol was significantly higher (P < 0.05) in fillets of fish fed the control diet than in those fed RA/RE, while β + γ-tocopherol was significantly lower in fillets of fish fed C than in the rest.     Estimation of renal function by CKD-EPI versus MDRD in a cohort of HIV-infected patients: a cross-sectional analysis

    Background: Accurately determining renal function is essential for clinical management of HIV patients. Classically, it has been evaluated by estimating glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) with the MDRD-equation, but today there is evidence that the new Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration (CKD-EPI) equation has greater diagnostic accuracy. To date, however, little information exists on patients with HIV-infection. This study aimed to evaluate eGFR by CKD-EPI vs. MDRD equations and to stratify renal function according to KDIGO guidelines. Methods: Cross-sectional, single center study including adult patients with HIV-infection. Results: Four thousand five hundred three patients with HIV-infection (864 women19%) were examined. Median age was 45 years (IQR 37-52), and median baseline creatinine was 0.93 mg/dL (IQR 0.82-1.05). A similar distribution of absolute measures of eGFR was found using both formulas (p = 0.548). Baseline median eGFR was 95.2 and 90.4 mL/min/ 1.73 m(2) for CKD-EPI and MDRD equations (p 90 mL/min/1.73 m(2)) in 73% patients and '' mild reduced GFR '' (60-89 mL/min/1.73 m(2)) in 24.3% of the patients, formerly classified as >60 mL/min/1.73 m(2) with MDRD. Conclusions: There was good correlation between CKD-EPI and MDRD. Estimating renal function using CKD-EPI equation allowed better staging of renal function and should be considered the method of choice.     Self and cross-velocity correlation functions and diffusion coefficients in liquids: a molecular dynamics study of binary mixtures of soft spheres

    Molecular dynamics simulation is applied to the study of the diffusion properties in binary liquid mixtures made up of soft-sphere particles with different sizes and masses. Self- and distinct velocity correlation functions and related diffusion coefficients have been calculated. Special attention has been paid to the dynamic cross correlations which have been computed through recently introduced relative mean molecular velocity correlation functions which are independent on the reference frame. The differences between the distinct velocity correlations and diffusion coefficients in different reference frames (mass-fixed, number-fixed, and solvent-fixed) are discussed

    Survival of HIV infected patients on maintenance hemodialysis in Cameroon: a comparative study

    Abstract Background There are conflicting reports on the impact of HIV in the era of combined antiretroviral (c-ART) on survival of patient with ESKD. We aimed to compare the one-year survival of HIV positive patients to that of their HIV negative counterparts with ESKD on maintenance haemodialysis in Cameroon. Methods This was a retrospective cohort study conducted in the haemodialysis units of the Douala and Yaoundé General Hospitals. All HIV positive patients treated by maintenance haemodialysis between January 2007 and March 2015 were included. A comparative group of HIV negative patients with ESKD were matched for age, sex, co morbidities, year of dialysis initiation and haemodialysis unit. Relevant data at the time of haemodialysis initiation and during the first year of haemodialysis was noted. Survival was analysed using the Kaplan Meier and Cox regression hazard ratio estimator. A p value < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results A total of 57 patients with HIV and 57 without HIV were included. Mean age was 46.25 ± 11.41 years, and 52.6% were females in both groups. HIV nephropathy (50.9%) was the main presumed aetiology of ESKD in the HIV group, while chronic glomerulonephritis (33.3%) and diabetes (21.1%) were the main aetiologies in the HIV negative group. At initiation of dialysis, the median CD4 count was 212 cell/mm3 (IQR; 138–455) and 77.2% were receiving c-ART. The proportion of patients who initiated dialysis with a temporary venous catheter was similar in both groups (p = 0.06). After one year on haemodialysis, survival rate was lower in the HIV positive group compared to the HIV negative group (61.4%/78.9%, HR: 2.05; 95% CI: 1.03–4.08; p = 0.042).Kaplan Meier survival curve was in direction of a lower survival in HIV positive group (p = 0.052). Conclusion The one year survival of HIV positive patients on maintenance haemodialysis in Cameroon seems to be lower compared to their HIV negative counterparts
