Measurement of the horizontal velocity of wind perturbations in the middle atmosphere by spaced MF radar systems
Two remote receiving sites have been set up at a distance of approx 40 km from the main MF radar system. This allows measurement of upper atmosphere winds from 60-120 km (3 km resolution) at the corners of an approximately equilateral triangle of side approx 20 km. Some preliminary data are compared through cross correlation and cross spectral analysis in an attempt to determine the horizontal velocity of wind perturbations and/or the horizontal wavelength and phase velocity of gravity waves

Hydrodynamic modelling of accretion flows
In the proceedings of this, and of several recent close binary conferences,
there have been several contributions describing smoothed particle
hydrodynamics simulations of accretion disks. It is apposite therefore to
review the numerical scheme itself with emphasis on its advantages for disk

Barriers and facilitators to palliative care education in nursing and residential homes: a rapid review
Background:
There is insufficient high-quality evidence to suggest that palliative care education can impact care home settings.
Aims:
To identify, appraise and synthesise all available evidence on the barriers and facilitators to providing palliative care education in residential and nursing care homes and to generate recommendations to increase the effectiveness of future palliative care education programmes in care homes.
Methods:
A rapid review searching CINAHL, Medline and ProQuest. One author screened full-text articles for inclusion. Any uncertainties were discussed with a second author.
Findings:
Twenty-two articles were included in the full review. Analysis of the included articles revealed the following overlapping themes: structural systems; cultural and personal issues; and knowledge translation issues with interaction.
Conclusion:
Addressing the barriers and facilitators when designing palliative care education programmes for care homes will lead to more successful outcomes
Isotope effect in quasi-two-dimensional metal-organic antiferromagnets
Although the isotope effect in superconducting materials is well-documented,
changes in the magnetic properties of antiferromagnets due to isotopic
substitution are seldom discussed and remain poorly understood. This is perhaps
surprising given the possible link between the quasi-two-dimensional (Q2D)
antiferromagnetic and superconducting phases of the layered cuprates. Here we
report the experimental observation of shifts in the N\'{e}el temperature and
critical magnetic fields (; ) in a Q2D organic molecular antiferromagnets on
substitution of hydrogen for deuterium. These compounds are characterized by
strong hydrogen bonds through which the dominant superexchange is mediated. We
evaluate how the in-plane and inter-plane exchange energies evolve as the
hydrogens on different ligands are substituted, and suggest a possible
mechanism for this effect in terms of the relative exchange efficiency of
hydrogen and deuterium bonds
Magnetic order in the quasi-one-dimensional spin 1/2 chain, copper pyrazine dinitrate
We present the first evidence of magnetic order in the quasi-one-dimensional
spin 1/2 molecular chain compound, copper pyrazine dinitrate Cu(C4H4N2)(NO3)2}.
Zero field muon-spin relaxation measurements made at dilution refrigerator
temperatures show oscillations in the measured asymmetry, characteristic of a
quasistatic magnetic field at the muon sites. Our measurements provide
convincing evidence for long range magnetic order below a temperature
T_N=107(1) mK. This leads to an estimate of the interchain coupling constant of
|J'|/k_B=0.046 K and to a ratio |J'/J| = 4.4 x 10^-3.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures. Submitted to Physical Review Letter
Significant differences in incubation times in sheep infected with bovine spongiform encephalopathy result from variation at codon 141 in the PRNP gene
The susceptibility of sheep to prion infection is linked to variation in the PRNP gene, which
encodes the prion protein. Common polymorphisms occur at codons 136, 154 and 171. Sheep
which are homozygous for the A<sub>136</sub>R<sub>154</sub>Q<sub>171</sub> allele are the most susceptible to bovine spongiform
encephalopathy (BSE). The effect of other polymorphisms on BSE susceptibility is unknown. We
orally infected ARQ/ARQ Cheviot sheep with equal amounts of BSE brain homogenate and a
range of incubation periods was observed. When we segregated sheep according to the amino
acid (L or F) encoded at codon 141 of the PRNP gene, the shortest incubation period was
observed in LL141 sheep, whilst incubation periods in FF<sub>141</sub> and LF<sub>141</sub> sheep were significantly
longer. No statistically significant differences existed in the expression of total prion protein or the
disease-associated isoform in BSE-infected sheep within each genotype subgroup. This
suggested that the amino acid encoded at codon 141 probably affects incubation times through
direct effects on protein misfolding rates
The electron-phonon coupling strength at metal surfaces directly determined from the Helium atom scattering Debye-Waller factor
A new quantum-theoretical derivation of the elastic and inelastic scattering
probability of He atoms from a metal surface, where the energy and momentum
exchange with the phonon gas can only occur through the mediation of the
surface free-electron density, shows that the Debye-Waller exponent is directly
proportional to the electron-phonon mass coupling constant . The
comparison between the values of extracted from existing data on the
Debye-Waller factor for various metal surfaces and the values known
from literature indicates a substantial agreement, which opens the possibility
of directly extracting the electron-phonon coupling strength in quasi-2D
conducting systems from the temperature or incident energy dependence of the
