    Qualitative study in Loop Quantum Cosmology

    This work contains a detailed qualitative analysis, in General Relativity and in Loop Quantum Cosmology, of the dynamics in the associated phase space of a scalar field minimally coupled with gravity, whose potential mimics the dynamics of a perfect fluid with a linear Equation of State (EoS). Dealing with the orbits (solutions) of the system, we will see that there are analytic ones, which lead to the same dynamics as the perfect fluid, and our goal is to check their stability, depending on the value of the EoS parameter, i.e., to show whether the other orbits converge or diverge to these analytic solutions at early and late times.Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures.     Quasar 3C 298: a test-case for meteoritic nanodiamond 3.5 µm emission

    Aims. We calculate the dust emission expected at 3.43 and 3.53 µm if meteoritic (i.e. hydrogenated) nanodiamonds are responsible for most of the far-UV break observed in quasars. Methods. We integrate the UV flux that hydrogenated nanodiamonds must absorb to reproduce the far-UV break. Based on laboratory spectra of H-terminated diamond surfaces, we analyse the radiative energy budget and derive theoretically the IR emission profiles expected for possible C-H surface stretch modes of the diamonds. Results. Using as test case a spectrum of 3C 298 provided by the Spitzer Observatory, we do not find evidence of these emission bands. Conclusions. While diamonds without surface adsorbates remain a viable candidate for explaining the far-UV break observed in quasars, hydrogenated nanodiamonds appear to be ruled out, as they would give rise to IR emission bands, which have not been observed so far

    Gravity in the 3+1-Split Formalism II: Self-Duality and the Emergence of the Gravitational Chern-Simons in the Boundary

    We study self-duality in the context of the 3+1-split formalism of gravity with non-zero cosmological constant. Lorentzian self-dual configurations are conformally flat spacetimes and have boundary data determined by classical solutions of the three-dimensional gravitational Chern-Simons. For Euclidean self-dual configurations, the relationship between their boundary initial positions and initial velocity is also determined by the three-dimensional gravitational Chern-Simons. Our results imply that bulk self-dual configurations are holographically described by the gravitational Chern-Simons theory which can either viewed as a boundary generating functional or as a boundary effective action.Comment: 25 pages; v2: minor improvements, references adde

    Glacis calcisolico y suelos con horizon cálcico en el NE de la provincia de Granada

    [Resumen] La importancia del estudio de las zonas semiáridas parece incuestionable ya que constituyen uno de los ecosistemas más extensos del mundo. España en concreto es el país de Europa que tiene las zonas más extensas y además coinciden con los ambientes socialmente más deprimidos, cuyas características derivan de la aridez ambiental. En el sector nororiental de la provincia de Granada se localiza la Depresión de Baza, definida por un altiplano con una altitud media de 950 metros. La geomorfología queda dibujada por dos conjuntos: alineaciones montañosas y altiplanicie, dando ésta última un paisaje singular que por su extrema sequedad constituye uno de los paisajes más característicos de las zonas esteparias peninsulares. La desigual evolución de los suelos nos permite detallar en el presente trabajo la unidad edafogeomorfológica del glacis calcisólico, desarrollada por denudación de la superficie del glacis lúvico antiguo y la materialización de suelos con horizonte cálcico, originado antiguamente por precipitación del carbonato cálcico ante la desecación del suelo en la estación seca, o petrocálcico 9riginado tras repetidas redisoluciones y reprecipitaciones de la caliza, con fuerte cementación final.[Abstract] Semiarid zones are the vastest ecosystems in the world, therefore their study is very important. Spain is the european country supporting mostly european semiarid zones, moreover these areas are underdeveloped because of their arid environment. The Baza Depresion is located at the north-east of Granada province and is a high plateau with 950m altitude average. Geomorphology is composed for two formations: a mountainous area and a high plateau; this offers a singular landscape making up one of the most characteristics Spanish sttepe. In this study, the calcisolic glacis edaphogeomorphological unit is detailed. This unit is developed by denudation of the old luvic glacis and soils with calcic horizon; this horizon was originated by calcium carbonate precipitation during the dry season, or in the case of petrocalcic horizon, originated by repeated redisolutions and reprecipitations of the calcium carbonate

    A flaw in the comparison between two different theoretical equations of state for a binary mixture of additive hard disks and Monte Carlo results, as recently reported in C. Barrio and J. R. Solana, Phys. Rev. E 63, 011201 (2001), is pointed out. It is found that both proposals, which require the equation of state of the single component system as input, lead to comparable accuracy but the one advocated by us [A. Santos, S. B. Yuste, and M. L\'{o}pez de Haro, Mol. Phys. 96, 1 (1999)] is simpler and complies with the exact limit in which the small disks are point particles.Comment: 4 pages, including 1 figur

    Chern-Simons Theory on S^1-Bundles: Abelianisation and q-deformed Yang-Mills Theory

    We study Chern-Simons theory on 3-manifolds MM that are circle-bundles over 2-dimensional surfaces Σ\Sigma and show that the method of Abelianisation, previously employed for trivial bundles Σ×S1\Sigma \times S^1, can be adapted to this case. This reduces the non-Abelian theory on MM to a 2-dimensional Abelian theory on Σ\Sigma which we identify with q-deformed Yang-Mills theory, as anticipated by Vafa et al. We compare and contrast our results with those obtained by Beasley and Witten using the method of non-Abelian localisation, and determine the surgery and framing presecription implicit in this path integral evaluation.     Level-rank duality of the U(N) WZW model, Chern-Simons theory, and 2d qYM theory

    We study the WZW, Chern-Simons, and 2d qYM theories with gauge group U(N). The U(N) WZW model is only well-defined for odd level K, and this model is shown to exhibit level-rank duality in a much simpler form than that for SU(N). The U(N) Chern-Simons theory on Seifert manifolds exhibits a similar duality, distinct from the level-rank duality of SU(N) Chern-Simons theory on S^3. When q = e^{2 pi i/(N+K)}, the observables of the 2d U(N) qYM theory can be expressed as a sum over a finite subset of U(N) representations.     Mesothelial versus endothelial cell seeding: evaluation of cell adherence to a fibroblastic matrix using 111In oxine

    The aim of this study was to compare the behaviour of mesothelial cells (MC) to that of endothelial cells (EC) when seeded onto a PTFE, prosthesis coated with a fibroblastic matrix. Three study groups were examined: a control group (Control) of PTFE prostheses with a fibroblast matrix (n = 8); Group EC, PTFE prostheses seeded with EC on a fibroblastic matrix (n = 8); and Group MC, PTFE, prostheses seeded with MC on a fibroblastic matrix (n = 8). All cell types were labelled with 111In (100 microCi/ml) 24 h after seeding, when the cells had formed a monolayer on the prosthetic surface. Radioactive levels were measured at 2, 4, 6, and 24 h. Both EC and MC showed optimal adherence. The MC had a better radioactive uptake and retention than the EC. The number of EC and MC cells that remained adherent to the matrix was large enough to ensure complete covering of the prosthetic surface. The use of MC is therefore feasible as an optimal alternative for achieving a natural covering on vascular prostheses prepared with a fibroblastic matrix
