Analysis and test of the central-blue-spot infall hallmark

The infall of material onto a protostar, in the case of optically thick line emission, produces an asymmetry in the blue- and red-wing line emission. For an angularly resolved emission, this translates in a blue central spot in the first-order moment (intensity weighted velocity) map. An analytical expression for the first-order moment intensity as a function of the projected distance was derived, for the cases of infinite and finite infall radius. The effect of a finite angular resolution, which requires the numerical convolution with the beam, was also studied. This method was applied to existing data of several star-forming regions, namely G31.41+0.31 HMC, B335, and LDN 1287, obtaining good fits to the first-order moment intensity maps, and deriving values of the central masses onto which the infall is taking place (G31.41+0.31 HMC: 70-120 MM_\odot; B335: 0.1 MM_\odot; Guitar Core of LDN 1287: 4.8 MM_\odot). The central-blue-spot infall hallmark appears to be a robust and reliable indicator of infall.Comment: Accepted for publication in A&

Deployment of Digital Video and Audio Over Electrical SCADA Networks

    Get PDF
With the arrival of new hardware and software technologies, supervisory control and data acquisition human-machine interfaces (SCADA/HMI), usually text-based, can now benefit from the advantages the inclusion of multimedia information brings. However, due to the special requirements imposed by such systems, integrating audio and video data into the SCADA interfaces is not a trivial task. In this document we analyze those special characteristics and propose solutions so this integration is possible in power systems communication.Ministerio de Ciencia y Tecnología TIC2000-0367-P4-0

Anomalous optical absorption in a random system with scale-free disorder

    Get PDF
We report on an anomalous behavior of the absorption spectrum in a one-dimensional lattice with long-range-correlated diagonal disorder with a power-like spectrum in the form S(k) ~ 1/k^A. These type of correlations give rise to a phase of extended states at the band center, provided A is larger than a critical value A_c. We show that for A < A_c the absorption spectrum is single-peaked, while an additional peak arises when A > A_c, signalling the occurrence of the Anderson transition. The peak is located slightly below the low-energy mobility edge, providing a unique spectroscopic tool to monitor the latter. We present qualitative arguments explaining this anomaly.Comment: 4 pages, 4 postscript figures, uses revtex

Determination of Optimal Grazing Management for Dairy Cows in Galicia (Spain) Using a Decision Support System

    Get PDF
GRAZEMORE is a decision support system (DSS) oriented to evaluate dairy grazing management decisions on pasture growth and milk production. The system integrates a herbage growth model (Barrett et al., 2003) and a herbage intake model (Delagarde et al., 2004) and has been validated in several EU countries. The objective of this work was to use this DSS to determine optimal grazing management of dairy cows at three supplementation levels and three grazing management strategies under Galician conditions

[Abstract] This piece analizes the possibilities of mining exploitation in a little outcrop of rOSfl granite. The zone has been researched, recognizing the main structural discontinuities, and characterizing the rock mass by the geomechanic classificationofBARTON. Two core drilling have been made to study the evolution ofthe deeper bed. The volume ofthe bed has been calculated by geometric calculation in the researched area. The theories ofCASTAING and RABU have been developed to estimate the useful volume of the bed for a minimum block size of 1 m3. We have implerríented a computer program in base ofEXCEL 4.0. The result is a useful volume of 51.67 %. By the application of the reduction coefficients ofsterility and irregularity, the maximum estimated efficiency of the exploitation is 33 %

Scaling Relations and Exponents in the Growth of Rough Interfaces Through Random Media

The growth of a rough interface through a random media is modelled by a continuous stochastic equation with a quenched noise. By use of the Novikov theorem we can transform the dependence of the noise on the interface height into an effective temporal correlation for different regimes of the evolution of the interface. The exponents characterizing the roughness of the interface can thus be computed by simple scaling arguments showing a good agreement with recent experiments and numerical simulations.Comment: 4 pages, RevTex, twocolumns, two figures (upon request). Molecular characterization of autophagic and apoptotic signaling induced by sorafenib in liver cancer cells

Sorafenib is the unique accepted molecular targeted drug for the treatment of patients in advanced stage of hepatocellular carcinoma. The current study evaluated cell signaling regulation of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, c-Jun-N-terminal kinase (JNK), Akt, and 5′AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) leading to autophagy and apoptosis induced by sorafenib. Sorafenib induced early (3–12 hr) ER stress characterized by an increase of Ser51P-eIF2α/eIF2α, C/EBP homologous protein (CHOP), IRE1α, and sXBP1, but a decrease of activating transcription factor 6 expression, overall temporally associated with the increase of Thr183,Tyr185P-JNK1/2/JNK1/2, Thr172P-AMPKα, Ser413P-Foxo3a, Thr308P-AKt/AKt and Thr32P-Foxo3a/Foxo3a ratios, and reduction of Ser2481P-mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR)/mTOR and protein translation. This pattern was related to a transient increase of tBid, Bim EL, Beclin-1, Bcl-xL, Bcl-2, autophagy markers, and reduction of myeloid cell leukemia-1 (Mcl-1) expression. The progressive increase of CHOP expression, and reduction of Thr308P-AKt/AKt and Ser473P-AKt/AKt ratios were associated with the reduction of autophagic flux and an additional upregulation of Bim EL expression and caspase-3 activity (24 hr). Small interfering-RNA (si-RNA) assays showed that Bim, but not Bak and Bax, was involved in the induction of caspase-3 in sorafenib-treated HepG2 cells. Sorafenib increased autophagic and apoptotic markers in tumor-derived xenograft model. In conclusion, the early sorafenib-induced ER stress and regulation of JNK and AMPK-dependent signaling were related to the induction of survival autophagic process. The sustained drug treatment induced a progressive increase of ER stress and PERK-CHOP-dependent rise of Bim EL, which was associated with the shift from autophagy to apoptosis. The kinetic of Bim EL expression profile might also be related to the tight balance between AKt- and AMPK-related signaling leading to Foxo3a-dependent BIM EL upregulation.

    Get PDF
In the Ciénaga de Paredes (73 · 45'-73· 49'W y 7·26'-7·29'N), located in the Department of Santander (Colombia), the composition, and the spatial and temporal variation of the cladoceran community structure was determined with samples taken with a 68 μm vertical-hauled net, at eight sampling stations in an annual cycle (February 1998 to January 1999). To evaluate the structure, Hill numbers (N0, N1 and N2) and evenness were used. The sampling support was calculated with the Chao 1 and 2 estimators. The existence of significant differences for Hill numbers, evenness, numeric density, water column, pH, OD, and temperature among field trips and among stations, was analysed through an ANOVA. The species and morphospecies found (31), had a tropical, subtropical, and cosmopolitan distribution; belonging to temporary water bodies, floodplains or "ciénagas". The highest abundances were registered for Moina minuta, Moina cf. micrura, Diaphanosoma brevireme and Ceriodaphnia cornuta, which represented 81.9 % of the total collected individuals. The results obtained with the richness estimates suggest that if the sampling effort were increased using the same techniques, the morphospecies' number would have not increased. With regard to the structure's spatial variation, the station V showed higher evenness, richness, and diversity, but lower numeric density; this condition shows the difference between this station and the other ones; ical trend is explained by this station being near to the main tributary of the "Ciénaga" ("Quebrada La Gómez").Regarding the temporal variation, the cladocerans' community structure changed between field trips, since the evenness and the richness showed significant differences, reflected by the variation in the relative abundance of the morphospecies but not in the cladocerans' abundance. This was caused by the fluctuations in rainfall and water level
