    Luminaire layout: Design and implementation

    The information contained in this report was presented during the discussion regarding guidelines for PAR uniformity in greenhouses. The data shows a lighting uniformity analysis in a research greenhouse for rose production at the Cornell University campus. The luminaire layout was designed using the computer program Lumen-Micro. After implementation of the design, accurate measurements were taken in the greenhouse and the uniformity analysis for both the design and implementation were compared. A study of several supplemental lighting installations resulted in the following recommendations: include only the actual growing area in the lighting uniformity analysis; for growing areas up to 20 square meters, take four measurements per square meter; for growing areas above 20 square meters, take one measurement per square meter; use one of the uniformity criteria and frequency graphs to compare lighting uniformity amongst designs; and design for uniformity criterion of a least 0.75 and the fraction within +/- 15% of the average PAR value should be close to one

    Variational Approach to Hard Sphere Segregation Under Gravity

    It is demonstrated that the minimization of the free energy functional for hard spheres and hard disks yields the result that excited granular materials under gravity segregate not only in the widely known "Brazil nut" fashion, i.e. with the larger particles rising to the top, but also in reverse "Brazil nut" fashion. Specifically, the local density approximation is used to investigate the crossover between the two types of segregation occurring in the liquid state, and the results are found to agree qualitatively with previously published results of simulation and of a simple model based on condensation.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figure

    Comparisons of luminaires: Efficacies and system design

    Lighting designs for architectural (aesthetic) purposes, vision and safety, and plant growth have many features in common but several crucial ones that are not. The human eye is very sensitive to the color (wavelength) of light, whereas plants are less so. There are morphological reactions, particularly to the red and blue portions of the light spectrum but, in general, plants appear to accept and use light for photosynthesis everywhere over the PAR region of the spectrum. In contrast, the human eye interprets light intensity on a logarithmic scale, making people insensitive to significant differences of light intensity. As a rough rule, light intensity must change by 30 to 50% for the human eye to recognize the difference. Plants respond much more linearly to light energy, at least at intensities below photosynthetic saturation. Thus, intensity differences not noticeable to the human eye can have significant effects on total plant growth and yield, and crop timing. These factors make luminaire selection and lighting system design particularly important when designing supplemental lighting systems for plant growth. Supplemental lighting for plant growth on the scale of commercial greenhouses is a relatively expensive undertaking. Light intensities are often much higher than required for task (vision) lighting, which increases both installation and operating costs. However, and especially in the northern regions of the United States (and Canada, Europe, etc.), supplemental lighting during winter may be necessary to produce certain crops (e.g., tomatoes) and very useful to achieve full plant growth potential and crop timing with most other greenhouse crops. Operating costs over the life of a luminaire typically will exceed the initial investment, making lighting efficacy a major consideration. This report reviews tests completed to evaluate the efficiencies of various commercially-available High-Pressure Sodium luminaires, and then describes the results of using a commercial lighting design computer program, Lumen-Micro, to explore how to place luminaires within greenhouses and plant growth chambers to achieve light (PAR) uniformity and relatively high lighting efficacies. Several suggestions are presented which could encourage systematic design of plant lighting systems

    Numerical Investigation on the Fixed-Stress Splitting Scheme for Biot’s Equations: Optimality of the Tuning Parameter

    We study the numerical solution of the quasi-static linear Biot equations solved iteratively by the fixed-stress splitting scheme. In each iteration the mechanical and flow problems are decoupled, where the flow problem is solved by keeping an artificial mean stress fixed. This introduces a numerical tuning parameter which can be optimized. We investigate numerically the optimality of the parameter and compare our results with physically and mathematically motivated values from the literature, which commonly only depend on mechanical material parameters. We demonstrate, that the optimal value of the tuning parameter is also affected by the boundary conditions and material parameters associated to the fluid flow problem suggesting the need for the integration of those in further mathematical analyses optimizing the tuning parameter.acceptedVersio

    The association of daily physical activity and birth outcome: a population-based cohort study

    The potential relationship between daily physical activity and pregnancy outcome remains unclear because of the wide variation in study designs and physical activity assessment measures. We sought to prospectively quantify the potential effects of the various domains of physical activity on selected birth outcomes in a large unselected population. The sample consisted of 11,759 singleton pregnancies from the Avon longitudinal study of parents and children, United Kingdom. Information on daily physical activity was collected by postal questionnaire for self-report measures. Main outcome measures were birth weight, gestational age at delivery, preterm birth and survival. After controlling for confounders, a sedentary lifestyle and paid work during the second trimester of pregnancy were found to be associated with a lower birth weight, while ‘bending and stooping’ and ‘working night shifts’ were associated with a higher birth weight. There was no association between physical exertion and duration of gestation or survival. Repetitive boring tasks during the first trimester was weakly associated with an increased risk of preterm birth (<37 weeks) (adjusted odds ratio [OR] = 1.25, 95% CI 1.04–1.50). ‘Bending and stooping’ during the third trimester was associated with a reduced risk of preterm birth (adjusted OR = 0.73, 95% CI 0.63–0.84). Demanding physical activities do not have a harmful effect on the selected birth outcomes while a sedentary lifestyle is associated with a lower birth weight. In the absence of either medical or obstetric complications, pregnant women may safely continue their normal daily physical activities should they wish to do so

    Discussing sexual health in spinal care

    Abstract BACKGROUND: The possible detrimental effects of spinal disease on sexual health are widely recognized; however, it is not known to what extent neurosurgeons discuss this topic with their patients. The aim of this study is to identify knowledge, attitude and practice patterns of neurosurgeons counseling their patients about sexual health. METHODS: All members of the Dutch Association of Neurosurgery (neurosurgeons and residents) were sent a questionnaire addressing their attitudes, knowledge and practice patterns regarding discussing sexual health. RESULTS: Response rate was 62 % with 89 questionnaires suitable for analysis. The majority of participants (83 %) were male; mean age, 42.4 years. The mean experience in neurosurgical practice was 9 years. Respondents assumed that in 34 % of their patients, sexual health was affected due to spinal disease. The majority of respondents (64 %) stated that responsibility for discussing sexual health lies (partly) with the neurosurgeon; however, 73 % indicated to (almost) never do this. The main reasons for not discussing sexual health were patients' old age (42 %), lack of knowledge (38 %) and lack of patients' initiative to bring up the subject (36 %). Twenty-six percent indicated lack of time as a reason. There was no evidence for gender or doctor's age discordance as important barriers. Fifty percent of participants wished to gain more knowledge on discussing sexual health with patients. CONCLUSION: This study shows that despite high prevalence of sexual dysfunction (SD) in spinal patients, counseling about sexual health is not often done in neurosurgical care. More training on sexual health counseling early in the residency program seems critical. By initiating the discussion, clinicians who deal with spinal patients have the potential to detect sexual dysfunction (SD) and to refer adequately when necessary, thereby improving overall quality of life of their patients.     Inter- and intrafractional 4D dose accumulation for evaluating ΔNTCP robustness in lung cancer.

    BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Model-based selection of proton therapy patients relies on a predefined reduction in normal tissue complication probability (NTCP) with respect to photon therapy. The decision is necessarily made based on the treatment plan, but NTCP can be affected when the delivered treatment deviates from the plan due to delivery inaccuracies. Especially for proton therapy of lung cancer, this can be important because of tissue density changes and, with pencil beam scanning, the interplay effect between the proton beam and breathing motion. MATERIALS AND METHODS In this work, we verified whether the expected benefit of proton therapy is retained despite delivery inaccuracies by reconstructing the delivered treatment using log-file based dose reconstruction and inter- and intrafractional accumulation. Additionally, the importance of two uncertain parameters for treatment reconstruction, namely deformable image registration (DIR) algorithm and α/β ratio, was assessed. RESULTS The expected benefit or proton therapy was confirmed in 97% of all studied cases, despite regular differences up to 2 percent point (p.p.) NTCP between the delivered and planned treatments. The choice of DIR algorithm affected NTCP up to 1.6 p.p., an order of magnitude higher than the effect of α/β ratio. CONCLUSION For the patient population and treatment technique employed, the predicted clinical benefit for patients selected for proton therapy was confirmed for 97.0 % percent of all cases, although the NTCP based proton selection was subject to 2 p.p. variations due to delivery inaccuracies

    Platform for automatic patient quality assurance via Monte Carlo simulations in proton therapy

    For radiation therapy, it is crucial to ensure that the delivered dose matches the planned dose. Errors in the dose calculations done in the treatment planning system (TPS), treatment delivery errors, other software bugs or data corruption during transfer might lead to significant differences between predicted and delivered doses. As such, patient specific quality assurance (QA) of dose distributions, through experimental validation of individual fields, is necessary. These measurement based approaches, however, are performed with 2D detectors, with limited resolution and in a water phantom. Moreover, they are work intensive and often impose a bottleneck to treatment efficiency. In this work, we investigated the potential to replace measurement-based approach with a simulation-based patient specific QA using a Monte Carlo (MC) code as independent dose calculation engine in combination with treatment log files. Our developed QA platform is composed of a web interface, servers and computation scripts, and is capable to autonomously launch simulations, identify and report dosimetric inconsistencies. To validate the beam model of independent MC engine, in-water simulations of mono-energetic layers and 30 SOBP-type dose distributions were performed. Average Gamma passing ratio 99 ± 0.5% for criteria 2%/2 mm was observed. To demonstrate feasibility of the proposed approach, 10 clinical cases such as head and neck, intracranial indications and craniospinal axis, were retrospectively evaluated via the QA platform. The results obtained via QA platform were compared to QA results obtained by measurement-based approach. This comparison demonstrated consistency between the methods, while the proposed approach significantly reduced in-room time required for QA procedures

    Translocation as a Novel Approach to Study Effects of a New Breeding Habitat on Reproductive Output in Wild Birds

    Environmental conditions under which species reproduce have major consequences on breeding success and subsequent fitness. Therefore breeding habitat choice is ultimately important. Studies rarely address the potential fitness pay-offs of alternative natural breeding habitats by experimental translocation. Here we present a new tool to study fitness consequences of free living birds in different habitats. We translocated a migratory passerine, the pied flycatcher (Ficedula hypoleuca), to a novel site, where pairs were subjected to a short stay (2–4 days) in a nest box-equipped aviary before being released. We show that it is technically possible to retain birds in the new area for breeding, allowing the study of reproductive consequences of dispersal under natural conditions. The translocation resulted in an extension of the interval between arrival and egg laying of four days, highlighting the importance of having an adequate control group. Clutch size and nestling parameters did not differ significantly between translocated and unmanipulated females, which suggests that the procedure did not affect birds in their reproductive performance later on. This method could be applied broadly in evolutionary and ecological research, e.g., to study the potential fitness benefits and costs for dispersing to more northern latitudes as a way of adapting to climate change
